St. Josephs Catholic Church

January 15, 2017

Word from the Pastor

One of the main themes of
todays readings is Divine call
and human response. Paul
recognized that he was called
by God to be an apostle of
Christ Jesus. At first he didnt
understand what that meant,
but he came to realize that his
role was to announce the
Good News of Gods salvation
to the Gentiles as well to the
Jews. We are Christians here
today, as a result of Pauls
saying yes to his call.
Isaiah heard a similar call. He realized that he was
formed as Gods servant in his mothers womb so
that not only the tribes of Israel would know Gods
salvation but that all the nations to the ends of the
earth would know God.
Jesus, in his baptism, also heard Gods call to
announce the Kingdom of God. It was revealed to
John the Baptist that Jesus was the one who will
baptize with the Holy Spirit when the dove came
down upon Jesus at baptism. And in our baptism we,
too, are called to that same ministry of Jesus. The
prayer of anointing after the baptism of a child goes
this way: As Christ was anointed priest, prophet,
and king, so may you live always as a member of his

body, sharing everlasting life.

Yes, we are called to be like Christ the priest, to be
holy, and to offer prayer for ourselves and for all
those in need. We are called to be like Christ the
prophet, to speak Gods word of love and mercy to
a world that is desperate to hear it. We are called to
be like Christ the King, to live life as members of
Gods royal family, free from sin and death.
Why are we tempted to put off answering Gods
call? Many of us seem to feel that we dont have
the gifts needed to answer Gods call. God couldnt
possibly want me, could He? Of course many, if not
all, of the prophets felt the same way. And in the
end, we know that God does not call the equipped,
God equips the called.
Dont put God on hold. Like Paul and Isaiah,
please say: Yes, I come to do your will.
As we celebrate this second Sunday in Ordinary
time, we present ourselves to do the work that God
called us to do. May the Eucharistic food and drink
give us the strength we need to answer Gods call.
At the same time remember to pray for the increase
of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, that
many men and women courageously and
generously respond to Gods invitation to this noble
call.

Journey through Scripture is the St. Paul Centers

dynamic Bible study program designed to help
ordinary Catholics grow in their knowledge of the
Scriptures while deepening their understanding of
the riches of our faith.
Distinctively Catholic,
Journey through Scripture reads the Bible from the
heart of the Church, engaging both the Old and
New Testaments and how they work together. Its
grounded in history, yet actively engages topics
faced by todays Catholic. More than just an
ordinary Bible study, its biblical catechesis.
The Bible and the Virgin Mary is a dynamic twelvepart video series that beautifully explains the
Catholic truths about Our Lady, showing how she
has been a part of Gods plan to bring salvation to
the world since the beginning of time. In addition
to explanation of dogmas, answers to common
objections, and demonstration of Marys presence
in the Old and New Testaments, this study discusses
Church-approved Marian apparitions that play an
important role in Catholic Tradition. Its sure to
help Catholics and non-Catholics alike grow in an
understanding and appreciation of the Mother of
God.

Donations Needed For Parish Medical Mission To Honduras!

Thank you for your overwhelming response to our need for toothbrushes and toothpaste! We appreciate your
efforts, so that everyone we help on our mission will go away with a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste. That
goal has now been met!
Our great need now is for financial donations to help us meet our goal of $10,000. needed for the medicines
we take to fill the prescriptions our doctors order for the poor people they examine on the mission.
We are currently $3,500. short of our goal and need your assistance!
Most of you have become donors over the past 2 years through our 2nd Collection; however, we will not be
having a 2nd Collection for the Parish Med Mission this year, so, as in past years, your much needed financial
donations can be sent to: Friends of the Missions, Inc., 2643 Tacito Trail,
Jacksonville, FL, 32223. (Please write "HN Med Mission" on the memo line of
your check.) SJCC works with Friends of the Missions, Inc. and your
financial donation is tax deductible. Friends is a 501 (c) 3 Not For Profit
Humanitarian Group. You will receive a Thank You-Tax Exempt Letter and
be remembered in a Mass of Thanksgiving for your financial donation of
anysize. God Bless you for helping us try to meet our goal of $10,000. for
the rest of the medicines we need for our Parish Medical Mission to
Honduras, February 12-19, 2017. As in the past, we will treat 2,000+ poor
people on our mission, as we bring the Love of Jesus to them through our
dental and health care and acts of kindness and goodwill. Peace to all.

Adult Confirmation

Confirmation is one of the steps toward full initiation into the

Christian Community. It seals and strengthens our baptism so
that
we
can
live as
adult
members
of
the
Church. Confirmation affords us the grace to minister Christs
love to all whom we meet throughout the course of our
lives. We hope that you will consider enrolling in Adult
Confirmation classes at St. Josephs.
Bishop Estvez will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on
adults on Sunday, June 4, at a 2:00 p.m. Mass in the Cathedral
Basilica of St. Augustine. If you are 18 years of age or older,
have been baptized, and have received First Holy
Communion in the Catholic Church, have not received

Career Connections

Most people will have 5 or more job changes during

their career. A job search requires specific skills not
required in many types of jobs. Career Connections
can help you learn the skills that are critical in finding
the job you want, whether you are in need of a job
now, or currently employed and seeking a change
to a new company or a new position with your
current employer.
We provide instruction and
ongoing coaching on the skills you will need to
successfully execute a job search. Skills that are
reviewed at every meeting include: handling the
emotional impact of an unexpected layoff,
inventorying your marketable skills, creating your job
search plan, networking the correct way, resum
writing,
interview
preparation
and
salary
negotiation. We meet every Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
in the Cody Enrichment Center (except holidays and
Church Holy days).
For questions on the weekly Career Connections
meetings call: Marty Broach, 923-0439 or Tom
Ackermann, 402-3655 . If you would like to join this
ministry as a meeting facilitator, please contact
