A. FOR CONDITIONS
Conditions
-Shoulder
Impingement
A.K.A Subacromial
Impingement

Frozen Shoulder
A.K.A Adhesive
Capsulitis

Anterior Shoulder
Dislocation

Definitions and
Structure Affected
- is shoulder pain that
is exacerbated with
overhead activities

-The affected
areas are:
-The Rotator Cuff
Muscle
-Humerus

- Conditions in
which it is
characterized by
the stiffness and
pain in the
patients shoulder.
- The structure
affected:
-Gleno-Humeral
joint

- An Injury to the
shoulder joint that
the patients upper
arm is displaced
from its joint
surfaces.
- The structures
affected are:
- Head of the
Humerus

Expected
Impairment
-During abduction
of the shoulder
joint, the supra
spinatus tendon is
exposed to friction
against the
acromion failure of
the cuff is due to
tear

Expected Activity
Limitations
-May have
weakness and loss
of motion when
raising the arm
above your head.
- Your shoulder can
feel stiff w/ lifting
or movement

- Frozen Shoulder
occurs when the
flexible tissue that
surrounds the
shoulder joint
becomes inflamed
and thickened.
Shoulder
movements
become reduced,
sometimes
completely frozen.
It is thought to be
due to scar like
tissue forming in
the shoulder
capsule

-Painful when
moving shoulder.
Interfere with
everyday task
such as driving,
dressing, and
sleeping. Even
scratching and
putting your hands
on the pocket

-Loss of normal
contour of the
deltoid and
acromion
prominent
posteriorly and

-Have difficulty
with handling
thing, like
grooming, and the
ability to lift and
push.

- Glenoid

laterally

B. FOR ASSESSMENT
Assessment
Procedure
-Empty-can test

Maneuver/Process

Positive Sign

-The examiners
other hand applies
downward
pressure on the
superior aspect of
the distal forearm
and the patient
resists.

The Empty Can

Test is considered
positive if there is
significant pain
and/or weakness.
Pain alone is less
accurate than
actual weakness,
especially when
arm is tested in
full can position
(45degrees of
external rotation)
as pain can be the
result of
supraspinatus
tendonitis or other
injured or inflamed
structures.

Structure/s
Affected
supraspinat
us tendon
supraspinat
us muscle

-Crank Test
-Patient is upright with
the arm elevated to
160 in the scapular
plane. Joint load is
applied along the axis
of the humerus with
one hand while the
other hand performs
humeral rotation. The
test can be repeated in
supine

-A positive test is
indicated during the
manuver (usually
during external
rotation) if there is
reproduction of
symptoms with or
without a click

C. FOR EXERCISES/TREATMENT
Treatment/Exercise

Maneuver/Process

Target Structure

Codmans Exercise

Bend forward at
the waist, (back
parallel to ground
is ideal). Allow
involved arm to
hang down,
perpendicular to
the floor. Keep arm
and shoulder
muscles relaxed.
Move arm slowly,
increasing the arc
as tolerated. This
technique should
cause only
minimal pain.

-Arm and shoulder

muscles

Rowings Exercise

Effect on Target
Structures
The exercises help
to relieve pain,
improve flexibility,
and help the
shoulder and arms
muscles feel more
relaxed. Pendulum
exercises are
simple, and they
require no
equipment.
