Whencreatinganewlicensefileviatheweblicensingportal,usersareaskedtoinputtheHostNameandHost
IDofthecomputerbeinglicensed.Thishelparticlediscussessomecommonmethodsforobtainingthis
informationfromthecomputer.IfENVIorIDLisalreadyinstalledonthecomputer,oursoftwarecanbeused
toobtainthisinformationbyfollowingtheinstructionsbelow.Thisistherecommendedmethodforobtaining
theHostNameandHostIDinformation.IfENVIorIDLisnotyetinstalledonthecomputer,pleasescrolldown
toviewsomecommonmethodsforfindingthisinformationwithouttheuseofoursoftware.
AbouttheHostName
TheHostName(orhostname)ofacomputerisalabelassignedtothemachinethatisdesignedtodistinguish
itfromotherdevicesconnectedtoanetwork.Itisoftenahumanreadablenicknamethatcorrespondstothe
IPAddressofthecomputer.
AbouttheHostID
TheHostID(orhostid)ofacomputeristheuniqueidentifierusedbytheENVIandIDLlicensingsoftwaretotie
alicensetoaparticularcomputer.Itismostcommonlya12digitalphanumericstring.TheHostIDisactually
thephysicaladdress,alsoknownastheMACaddress,ofoneofthehardwarecomponentsofthemachine.
Computersoftenhaveseveralphysicaladdressesassociatedwithvarioushardwarecomponents.The
recommendedmethodforobtainingtheHostIDofacomputeristouseoursoftware.Thiswillensurethatthe
physicaladdressreferencedinthelicensefileisthesamephysicaladdressthatoursoftwarewillbe
referencingwhenanENVIorIDLsessionislaunched.IfothermethodsareusedtoobtaintheHostID,please
besuretoremoveanydashes,spaces,orcolonsthatmayexistbetweenthelettersandnumbersofthe
alphanumericstring.WhencopyingandpastingtheHostIDinformationintotheweblicensingportal,itis
commonforspacesbeforeoraftertheHostIDtocarryover.Intheweblicensingportal,pleasebesurethat
nospacesexistbeforeorafterthe12digitstring.

WhentheLicenseWizardopens,selecttheradiobuttonto"Requestalicenseifyoudon'thaveinternet
access"
Whenyouclick"Next",asmalltextfilewillbegeneratedwhichcontainstheHostNameandHostID
informationforyourcomputer.FortheHostID,therearesometimesseveralsetsof12digitalphanumeric
stringslisted,whichareeachseparatedbyasmallspace(each12digitstringrepresentsaphysicaladdress

theHostIDofthecomputer.AnalternativetothismethodwouldbetousetheLicenseWizardthatcomes
packagedwithENVIandIDL.IfusingtheLicenseWizard,pleasefollowalongwiththeinstructionsdescribed
forWindowsOS.OnMacOSX,theLicenseWizardcanbefoundbynavigatingto'Applications>exelis>
envi5x(oridl8x)>LicenseWizard'.
