INSERTION IN CONTEXT : DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS

AT JAMIA UNIVERSITY DELHI
The Jamia Milia Islamia University was born during the nonco-operation movement in the 1920. It added various
departments over period of time and now stands as one of the
landmarks of university education. It is setting up a department
of fine arts as a part of its next phase of development. The
campus consists of a medley of architectural styles from pre
dominantly colonial to post-modern and yet it forms an important
context for insertion.
The site (Fig.1. and Fig.2) has its entrance through gates no. 2
and 3 of the university while the back side has 45 m wide Okhla
Vihar road and the site acts as a link between these two roads.
There is a maqbara in approximately the centre of the site made
of brick and simple character. It cannot be demolished despite
not being in frequent use. Some trees are also present on the
site. Topography is flat and drainage is effective.
