Regular Maintenance Procedures for

Legacy Platforms
This section describes the cleaning of the C3 product air filters, the only
maintenance task that must be done on a regular basis. The air filters are
designed to be removed and cleaned while the system is operating without
presenting an electrical hazard, causing damage to the system, or
interrupting service.
The air filter removes dust from the room that is drawn into components by
the cooling fans. Once a month, check the perforated areas (air inlet) on
the side of the C3 product for dust collection. In a clean environment, dust
should not accumulate in that area. If dust is collecting, the switch room
environmental filters may not be working.
Cleaning the air filters takes approximately twenty to thirty minutes if a
vacuum is used to clean the air filters. If a warm cleaning solution is used,
a duplicate set of filters is required so that the first filters can dry thoroughly
(overnight) before being re-installed into the filter trays.

Note: The following procedure is for the 410, 510, 512, and 514 C3
platforms. Procedures for filter replacement and maintenance on Sun
Netra T2000, T5220, 240, and 440 platforms can be found at Sun
Microsystems website: http://www.sun.com/products-n-solutions/
hardware/docs/Servers/. In addition, procedures for the T2000 and
T5220 C3 platforms can be found in section Component Replacement
Procedures for T2000 and T5220 (page 49).

direction of normal airflow to ensure that dirt is not pulled
through the filtering element.
or

Immerse the filter in warm water with a cleaning solution and

agitate manually until all dirt is removed. Ensure that the
filtering element is completely dry before returning it to the
filter tray. (This requires that a spare clean filter be inserted
into the filter tray while the original filter is being cleaned and
dried.)

Attention

Ensure that the filter is completely dry before reinstalling.

Manual Database Backup Procedure

Every night the C3 product makes a backup of the database which is

saved to the hard drive and digital tape drive. If a newer version of the
database needs to be saved, the following steps are used to create a
backup of the C3 product database. Note that the tape drive in the C3
Models 512 and 514 use the AIT type of tape. For the C3 Model 410, a
DDS-3 type of tape is used. Using other types of tape may cause damage
to the tape.

Find the active or standby Oam C3 node. This can be done by

finding out which nodes are running OamCfg. The backup must
be done from one of these two nodes.

Insert a write-enabled tape into the proper C3 node if a tape

backup is desired.

SSH into the C3 node (that is running OamCfg) as user santera.

Execute the backup procedure by entering the following

command:

Attention

Do not execute the backup command as root user. If the command is

executed as root, the application OamNm file management
processes will not be able to delete the backup in the future to create
disk space when necessary.

/opt/ SANTone /msc/active/cron/dbbackup.sh

The database is backed up to the directory /dbbackup/

<YYMMDDHHMMSS> (Year Month Day Hour Minute Second)
5

Execute the following command to write the backup files to tape:

tar -cvf /dev/rmt/0 /dbbackup/<yearmonthdate>

Display the tape contents to verify that it was saved by typing the
following:
tar -lvf /dev/rmt/0
--End--

Shutting Down the C3 Unit

It is necessary to shut down a C3 unit whenever replacing hard drives, the

front faceplate assembly, CD/DVD drives, tape drives, the alarm board, the
SS7 or ethernet cards, or adding additional memory. Before shutting down
the C3 unit, it is necessary to make sure the unit is in standby mode. Refer
to the following steps to shut down the C3 unit.

20 December 2014

Step

Action

Within the GenView EMS GUI, identify all active C3 applications

running on the target node.

Within the EMS GUI, verify there is a standby program instance

on one of the other nodes for all active processes running on the
target node.

Attention

There must be a standby program on another node for each active

process running on the target node.

Use EMS system status to determine if the target node has the
active instance of OamCfg. If OamCfg is active on the target
node, use the EMS to switch OamCfg active status to a different
node.

From the EMS, inhibit any SS7 links that terminate on the target
node.

Attention

Verify SS7 links on other nodes are carrying the SS7 traffic

From the EMS, initiate a shutdown of the target node. Refresh

the EMS GUI and verify the target node is in a locked status.

Use SSH to log into the target node.

Log on as a root user by entering the following command:

su root

Enter the password.

Shut down the C3 unit by entering the following command:

init 0

10

After shutdown, the target node is at the PROM monitor (OK)

prompt.

11

Turn off the A circuit breaker to the target node. Verify breaker
locations by labels at PDU for circuit breaker identification

12

Verify that the proper circuit breaker was turned off by monitoring
the EMS events. The target C3 unit should indicate loss of
redundant power for the target unit.

13

Turn off the B circuit breaker to the target node.Verify breaker

locations by labels at PDU for circuit breaker identification.

14

Manually disconnect the C3 unit A and B power cables, A and B

returns and chassis ground.

Replacing the boot disk of a T2000 or T5220 C3

Procedure Outline
Replace the Disk Drive (page 49)
This is the same as for a data disk replacement, with the following
exception:
in Step 2, physically remove and replace the boot disk in slot 0 on the left,
instead of the data disk in slot 1 on the right.

Replacing the T2000 or T5220 C3

It may become necessary to replace a complete C3 unit if a system failure

cannot be resolved by replacing or servicing a Field Replaceable Unit
(FRU), such as a data or boot disk. Customers can have a Depot
Maintenance Unit (DMU) on-site that is custom-configured to the exact
hardware specifications of the installed C3 unit so that it is a permanent
replacement if the installed unit ever fails.

Replace the C3 Unit

This is the same procedure as for replacing a data disk, with the following
exception:
in the second step the entire C3 unit is removed and replaced as shown in
the following procedure.

Component Replacement Procedures for

IA-RMS
This section describes how to perform removal and replacement
procedures for C3 field-replaceable units (FRUs) on the Intelligent
Application Rack Mount Server (IA-RMS) platform.

In this section:

Required Tools (page 57)

Removing the Front Bezel (page 58)
Re-installing the Front Bezel (page 59)
Replacing a Power Supply Module (page 59)
Replacing the Filter (page 61)
Replacing Hard Disk Drives (page 62)

Required Tools

The following tools may be necessary for replacing a component:

Flat-blade screwdriver
No. 1 Phillips-head (cross-point) screwdriver
No. 2 Phillips-head (cross-point) screwdriver
Personal grounding device, such as an anti-static wrist strap and a
grounded conductive pad

Note: All references to left, right, front, top, and bottom in the
following procedures assume that you are facing the front of the
server, as it would be positioned for normal operation.

Attention

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) and ESD protection: ESD can damage disk
drives, boards, and other parts. We recommend that you perform all
procedures in this chapter only at an ESD workstation. If one is not
available, provide some ESD protection by wearing an antistatic wrist strap
attached to chassis ground (any unpainted metal surface) on your server
when handling parts.

Replacing a Power Supply Module

The C3 consists of two AC or DC power supply modules. The power

supply modules are hot-swappable, so no chassis components have to be
removed to add or replace a module.

The power supply module is rated for 650W output capability in full AC or
DC input voltage range. The minimum steady-state DC input voltage at
which the equipment remains fully operational is -38 VDC. The nominal
operating voltage of the DC system is -48 VDC.
AC and DC Power Supplies (page 60) shows details about the AC and
DC power supply modules.

Replacing the Filter61

Replacing an AC Power Supply Module

Replacing the Filter

The air filter is located behind the front bezel of the C3 Controller. The C3
Controller is equipped with thermal sensors to monitor the internal
temperature of the system. If the air filter gets clogged so that the fans are
not able to pull air through the system, the internal temperature will rise
causing a Minor and/or Major telco alarms manager (TAM) LED to be
asserted. This active alarm provides an indication that the air filter should
be inspected and/or replaced.

Note: Replace the air filter after every 6 months.

Replacing the Filter
Step

Action

Remove the front bezel of the C3 Controller. See Removing the

Front Bezel (page 58).

Remove the old filter.

Lay the new filter on the back of the front bezel as shown in the
following figure.

Replacing Hard Disk Drives

The IA-RMS chassis supports two hot-swappable hard disk drives, which
are accessible from the front of the chassis with the bezel removed. The
hard disk drives are mounted in removable drive carriers that latch into the
drive bay sub-assembly.
The boot and data drives are mirrored in a RAID configuration on the IARMS platform. Hence, it is likely that at most times a single disk will fail,
which will not require powering down the C3 controller.

Use this procedure to physically replace a hard drive.

Attention

Please contact GENBAND Technical Support before performing this procedure

so that the Technical Support can prepare the C3 Controller for the physical
replacement of the hard drive. After this procedure is performed, the GENBAND
Technical Support will bring the hard drive into service.
