Ocean-grown biofuel

A possible biofuel proposed by NASA uses algae to clean wastewater

and produce oil. How it may work:

1 Semi-
permeable bags
2 Bags allow freshwater
to flow out of the bag and
are filled with prevent saltwater from
wastewater and
freshwater algae
entering, killing algae
3 Algae feed on the
Carbon waste and grow fatty, lipid
dioxide cells

Bags absorb carbon dioxide from the

air and release oxygen and freshwater
into the ocean
4 Fatty
cells are
rich in oil to be
used as fuel
Oil derived by land plants
Gallons produced annually per acre*
Some types
At least 2,000 gallons
of algae
(7,570 liters)
Palms 600 gallons (2,271 liters)
