Alternative Energy Sources. (2015). In A. H. Blackwell & E. Manar (Eds.), UXL Encyclopedia
of Science (3rd ed.). Farmington Hills, MI: UXL. Retrieved from
Summary:
The website contains numerous examples of alternate sources of energy, humans as a
species have developed and used since the start of the 21st century. These sources help generate
renewable energy that can be used again. Solar, wind, water, and geothermal are sources of
energy that generate electricity with little or no pollutants at all. By doing it could help prevent
some of the biggest environmental concerns today : global warming, melting polar ice caps, and
degradation of the environment. Also the website contains the sources of energy used by humans
today: fossil fuels, oil, and coal. It divides the sources of energy used today with the sources of
energy that is rising globally.
Application to Research:
This website helps me so much because it gives different sources of energy used today
and then contrast it with the rising alternative fuels to provide a general statement so see that the
alternatives are much better. By giving me both the pros and cons of these alternatives I am able
to conclude which sources are better easily by giving them to me in order. This site also shows
me the authors credentials so I know that the information is valid and reliable for my research.
Its organization helps with finding information very quickly for me. Question: Can I utilise
other sources by the same author on the same topic twice because the conflicting information on
both passages help enhance my research better ?.

news website: http://news.mit.edu/2016/hot-new-solar-cell-0523
Summary: Website
This website talks about how a group of students from MIT increased the efficiency of
solar panels by using photovoltaic cell with the STPV components. The team of researchers
added new layers of solar cells to help the efficiency and reduces the amount of heat that later
effects the solar panels. This is accomplished by using multi-layered photovoltaic cells. The first
layer is first accomplishing the amount of heat and radiation that is released by not incorporating
that in the amount of energy produced by the solar panels. Thus, the temperature is reduced and
the extra heat is released as heat radiation. In the second layer of the panels, there are the key

components that convert light into different wavelengths based on their heat. This is made
possible by the nanophotonic crystals that are incorporated in the second layer.
Application to Research: This information could help my research because it is one of
many examples that explains why solar panels are still increasing every day and why the amount
of production is increasing every day. Due to this, the price in also much cheaper and also it
makes it more efficient in the future and could help still be in the race for energy production
along with nuclear energy and other fossil fuels.

Summary: Website
This website talks about Teslas new project on the use of solar rooftops to power a
gigafactory. An investor handout revealed a 70-megawatt (MW) solar array along with ground
solar panels could enable the massive factory to operate entirely on clean energy. Currently the
amount of energy used by this is seven times larger than any other installed rooftop in the world.
The 70 MW solar array would be around seven times larger than any rooftop arrays currently
installed. Currently, India boasts the title of the worlds largest rooftop at 11.5 MW, but falling
second to that is the rooftop in California which is at 10 MW.
Application to Research: This could apply to my research tremendously because it talks
about many factors that could potentially be changed as more and more improvements are
coming. The change in cost of the solar power has come from due to its recently availability as
solar power has become the most abundant resource in the world because all itr need is sunlight.
Another factor to take into is the increase in productivity due to new photovoltaic material in the
solar panels.

Summary: Website
In this website, it talks about the growth of solar panels in the United States and how it
constitutes to the generation of electricity on a scale measuring up to the nation. In this method
of talking, the current growth of solar power can exceed expectations faster than they were
projected in the past. At the current rate the solar power could power up to 10% of the nations
electricity before 2030, the year estimated to power the nations power upto 10%. Ten percent
may not seem like a lot, but it adds up to about saving one hundred million carbon pollutants
each year. That equates to a lot of unnecessary pollution that can be easily patrolled and getten
rid of which will help save the environment. The value of solar power is finally reaching its
audience and later reach its potential of being able to power about more than of the nation by
itself.
Application to Research: This website in a way kind of answers my question because it
tells me that by 2030, there will be about 10% of the nations power be generated by solar power
which is a huge jump form .6%.

region. By doing this it will help them get energy for free instead of depending on
kerosene and other materials that help make greenhouse gases. Countries in Africa, such
as Kenya, receive an immense amount of sunlight that can be harnessed for sustainable
energy in the future. This project and partnership will many people in these developing

Summary: Article

This article talks about the future of energy from renewable resources. By
2050, the majority of the energy of the world can be acquired from renewable sources.
The researchers Mark Z. Jacobson and Mark Delucchi said that by 2030 all new energy
generation would come from renewable energy. And by 2050, all the old energy would be
converted to new energy as well. There are obviously many benefits to this solution. By
including only renewable energy, there would be a thirty percent decrease in the rate of
demand of worlds energy. With this is mind, this will save millions of people from dying
because every year people die from air pollution and from the hazardous materials
formed from the factories which are later affected by the people and cause people to get
many viruses and bacteria.
Application to Research:
Using information from this article, it helps to know about the potential
problems that could be solved from using entirely clean renewable energy. This will help
raise concerns all around the world, encouraging for the growth of new sources of energy
in the future.
Engdahl, S. (2015). Diverse alternative sources will be essential to the future. Retrieved from
Opposing Viewpoints in Context database.
Summary:
This article summarizes the main reasons for solving the problems with
this because in the future most of the fossil fuels will run out and we will need to find
alternative materials to find another way to fuel our planet and support the human
population. Due to the population growth in the last century, the amount of materials in
the world will not be enough to support the human species. Currently only a small
proportion of the energy is attained by renewable energy, by fixing these problems right
now instead of waiting in the future, the planet will benefit greatly because then the
resources of Earth will not be completely depleted and the destruction of land will not
play much of a factor in gaining energy. These two problems only account for a small
part of the problems caused by humans. By using renewable energy, these problems can
be solved fairly easy.
Application to Research:
Using awareness helps the public be informed more about this issue and
make sure that they will not neglect it and take it for granted. This can later help me with
finding new laws that can be motivated to be passed as the future of the world comes
closer.

Summary:

In 2016, the use of solar energy has increased exponentially from the year before.
According to the projections coming in the next few years, the investments in the future
appear to be doubling from the past two years combined. In Singapore, the investments
of the use of solar power as increased to $150 million dollars. Globally the nations across
the world want to make a quick start in order to head off even greater negative impact
later in the future. Germany, for example, is trying to replace its nuclear energy, but in
order to do that, it has to produce solar energy 4.6 times greater than the current use of
solar energy.
Application to Research:
This news article will help me because it gives me a global perspective on the use
of solar energy and the investments coming in the future. It also gives me viewpoints of
other countries on the importance of solar by their use of solar energy. By how much they
are willing to invest in it to avoid big problems in the future and to avoid emission
pollutants caused by the nuclear power plants today, it shows how much they care for
their desire to increase the production of solar panels.

In this website, it talks about the growth of solar panels in the United States and how it
constitutes to the generation of electricity on a scale measuring up to the nation. Nationally, solar
PV capacity increased at a rate of 77 percent per year from 2010 to 2013. If solar installations
continue to increase at less than one-third of that annual rate of growth (22 percent) between
2013 and 2030, America would have enough solar energy to generate 10 percent of its electricity.
Getting at least 10 percent of Americas electricity from the sun by 2030 would represent a major
step toward stabilizing the climate, cleaning our air and building a prosperous, sustainable
economy. This growth of 10% each year is primarily accustomed to only increase as technology
increases because there are constantly improvements being made on solar panels.
Application to Research: This website told me that the photovoltaic capacity over the
last three years, a very short time span, that the capacity has increased at a rate of 77% per year,
at this rate solar power will efficiently power most of the country.

primarily shows data from the United States. It has many interesting points about
Hydropower. Some facts include that hydropower accounts for 7% of the nations power,
and internationally it accounts for 16% of the worlds electricity input. Another important
fact is that renewable sources have finally have been able to replace non-renewable

researchers have found that the electricity deficits occur for three hours a day and that
could be replaced by the renewable resources by either solar or wind, but there are going
to be problems such as the storage issues dealing with the sources. In conclusion, it is
stated it is best to use solar energy without any storage. This later could help the state
electricity deficits by 52%. Later it is projected that the use of renewable sources is going
to increase in coming generations.

used renewable resource in the world, beating solar energy. Hydroelectric power does not
waste essential space like its competitors and also produces more energy than them as
well. But it is far from perfect because it emits a lot of pollution unlike its competition
and it kind of goes against its essential purpose, to replace sources that pollute. Also it is
very expensive, a common characteristic from all renewable resources.

is a significant increase from when it first started. But wind power is known to be a little
unpredictable due to uncertainty of the amount of the wind that will be produced by the
area. For this primary reason Wind mills take a vast amount of space and still not be able
to live up to the production of Nuclear power plants. For comparison, if a windmill and
power plant take up to the same amount of space, the power plant can power up to twothousand more times than the windmill. Texas and Iowa can get 30% of their electricity
primarily from wind due to their prime location. Many places do not have as much wind
production as Texas and Iowa.
Application to Research:
Using information from this article, it helps to know about production of

producing energy that cannot even begin to compete with nuclear energy at any level. It is still
more expensive and under performs nuclear energy by a longshot. But still, more improvements
are being made due to concerns about future environmental effects and hazards that are going to
be a huge global issue.

saying that the growth of solar panels in the United States is rapidly changing and they are being
manufactured faster than they can be used. This overall is causing them to power more and more
parts of the country than ever before. There is more than ten gigawatts of photovoltaic cells
under construction and that is continuing through the first half of the 2017, which started on
second half of the 2016 year. This growth demonstrates that as future nears, the amount of
energy generated from fossil fuels is decreasing.

In this Newsletter, it talks about several people who put solar panels on the roofs

only have to pay a fraction of their electricity bill. The increase of the use of solar panels
is directly related to the stagnant drop of the cost of installation of solar panels in
peoples homes. This drop led more people to use solar panels across New York city. New
Yorks fire codes make it difficult for people to install more solar panels because it
requires a six feet of clear path from the perimeter of their roofs. By using a canopy, the
installation of solar panels can more than double. Gaelen McKee, the president of
Brooklyn SolarWorks, worked with an engineer to build a canopy that raises the canopy
more than ten feet from the rooftops. The amount of money spent to install solar panels
was about 1.7 million dollars, but the money can be easily recovered in about five years.
Many people said they greatly benefited and decreased their electricity bill by 70%.

This website talks about the future of solar power. In this website it talks about five
achievements of solar power in the recent years. First of all it talks about its capacity, it is the
most abundant resource in the world because all one needs is sunlight to power their solar panels
and that is enough to generate enough electricity. Solar power has been installed quite
extensively in the past few years, as it is the most newly installed power in the world. It also
accounts for twenty percent of the worlds all new power generation capacity. Second is the
number of jobs that are available because, they have been employing about 2.8 million people,
the most of any renewable energy. Third there is cost, there seems to be a misconception are
extremely expensive and that only a few are able to afford, but with new efforts the cost of solar
power has hit record lows, as low as 5.84 cents for kilowatt per hour. Fourth we have investment,
it takes in account for half of the renewable energy sector in generating effective power. Finally
there is the most important factor to consider, the environment. Carbon emissions have already
been down by up to 300 million tonnes per year. This can increase to up to three gigatonnes of
CO2 per year in 2030.

guaranteed to be powered by renewables for more than 50% of the nation. Law agencies
such as cutting down the amount of carbon emissions by placing a price on them. As well
as maintaining a long-term plan about the renewable energy produced and taking into
account the waste and huge earth devastating accounts that are caused by the nonrenewable energy sources.
Application to Research:
This article can help me with my research by applying long term future plans into
effect to show the future of the country. These plans, if successful, can help generate
more than half the nation with clean-renewable energy without causing any greenhouse
gases as well as the waste produced by these energy sources.

Summary: Website
In this website, it talks about the amount of production of solar power in the United
States compared to other major solar power contributors. Over one million solar panels were
installed in the United States this year, but there is still a big path to walk on because the million
solar panels may sound like a lot but that does not generate a lot of power because they only
generate about one percent of the nations electricity. In order to make these solar panels more
effective, its installations have to increase very rapidly as much as installing two million solar
panels each year just make sure that it generates a lot of energy for the nation and keep up with
nuclear energy and other fossil fuels in the nation. Solar power does have the potential to play a
major factor in the production of energy but the current results need to be more promising if the
world is going to able to survive without any carbon-emissions.
Application to Research: This looks at the production of solar power over the past year
in America and it shows me statistics about the number of solar panel installations in the country,
about one million.

Summary: Article
This article summarizes most of the renewable energy sources that generate most
of U. Ss electricity and energy. According to the statistics, only 10% of the energy that
supplies the United States comes from renewables. It explains all of the renewables that
are available in the United States and how each one is used as well as how much energy
it provides to the country. Some examples of renewables include: wood and wood waste,
solid waste, landfill gas and biogas, ethanol, hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar.
Even though it may sound like that the amount of materials that can be used to make
renewable energy is a lot, the amount we get in return is not as much as it shows. The
problem with renewables is that since they depend on nature, they can be pretty
unpredictable at times. Like, there could be a cloudy day that can prevent solar panels
from getting the sunlight to make energy, or there could be no wind one day for the
windmills.
Application to Research:
This article can help me showing me statistics about the amount of energy
generated from each energy source. And how effective it could be in the future to follow,
as improvements are made every day.

US solar market set to grow 119% in 2016, installation to reach 16 gigawatts. (2016, March 9).
Retrieved November 16, 2016, from http://www.seia.org/news/us-solar-market-set-grow119-2016-installations-reach-16-gw
Summary: Article
This news article talks about the production of solar power skyrocketing
in the United States in 2016. In 2016, more solar power can be accumulated for the
nations electricity. A utility-scale segment used for the GTM research forecasts 16
gigawatts of energy of solar that is to be installed in this year. This number more than
doubles last years production of solar power. Last year, the record was 7.3 gigawatts of
solar that was installed, so this year it more than doubled that number. Utility-scale
installations will represent 74 percent of the installations for the year. But increasingly
people are becoming accustomed to having solar panels on their roofs, which the officials
are hoping will help spread the use of solar panels across the country.
Application to Research:
Using information from this article, it helps me to understand the amount of
production solar panels have on this year. It also helps me keep intact with the amount of
gigawatts produced in the past that is compared to the present and the years forward to
come which shows a steep comparison in the next years.

Summary: Website
In this Newspaper article, it talks about the growth of solar panels in the United States
and how it constitutes to the generation of electricity on a scale measuring up to the nation. The
US solar industry expects to install 14.5 gigawatts of solar power in 2016, a 94% increase over
the record 7.5 gigawatts last year, according to a new market report by GTM Research and the
Solar Energy Industries Association. In 2015, for the first time in U.S. history, there have been
more solar systems online than natural gas plants. This created a huge boost for the economy, in
which more than twenty-two billion dollars have been returned from 2014 to 2015. Also in this

news article, it talks about the price of solar panels, and how they could decrease from 74 cents
to 63 cents per kilowatt. This decrease in cost also facilitated use of more solar power in 2015
and 2016.
Application to Research: By constantly looking at the production that solar power
provides for the nation, it gives a glimpse of the future on its impact in the environment. Due to
its eco-friendly nature (renewable resource) it can be very beneficial to other living things in the
planet.
