The Town of Strathmore has agreed to support a request for annexation of a half section
of land on the northwest corner of town along
range road 254 and township road 244.
The Telsec Property Corporation (landowners within the annexation boundary) requested the annexation.
This Oxbow development has been contemplated for many years, said Kristi Beunder, a planning consultant with Civic Works, a
specialized Calgary-based planning and design
consulting firm. We had a letter from the Town
of Strathmore allowing us to connect to their
water system but not their sanitary system. If
this land stays sitting in the county and not annexed in the town, we would have to come up
with a solution for the waste water, she said.
If the annexation takes place, the land use
is envisioned to be residential land and can
support 1,500-2,000 dwelling units which is
approximately 3,105-4,140 future residents.
There will also be a small scale local commercial node developed on the land.
The existing Oxbow Golf Course will not be
moved and will still be available for use.
I was really concerned about [whether] the
golf course would be staying and it is, said
Hillview resident, Jack Worth. I was also really concerned about the existing wetland but
I was told they are keeping that or else moving
it elsewhere, but they arent getting rid of it.
Should the annexation be supported by the
municipal government, it will move on to the
provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs for approval. The whole process can move along
quickly if uncontested.
An open house was held Jan. 10, and although many questions were answered, some
people are still unsatisfied about what is happening and worried that not everything has
been thought through.
I live here (on the north side of township
road 244, directly north of the proposed annexation area) and we rent out our land to
farmers whose only access to both sides of
our property, which has a coulee through it, is
from township road 244, said county resident,
Jennifer Corbin, also stating that the north
boundary road, which runs through the north
end of Strathmore, has a 75 per cent ban on it
all year long.

The Town of Strathmore is going to issue fines to enforce compliance by residents, to actions requested on matters
concerning private property.
We had roundtable talks with staff
and we will continue to talk to people
and work on this, said Mel Tiede, Town
of Strathmores director of corporate services.
Bylaw 17-02 passed third reading on
Jan. 11. The bylaw establishes a $250
fine for recreational vehicles or storage
units kept for extended periods in front
yards of residential properties. Parking
cannot be longer than three days in a
one-week period.
There are a number of options available to residents, including renting a
space at one of the many storage businesses, said Tiede.
The Town of Strathmore development
officer will have the authority to fine residents $500 for having a sea can storage
unit on residential lots. The development
officer will notify the owner by letter
that they are required to remove the unit
from their property.
Sign infractions will see $500 fines
based on a decision forwarded by the
towns downtown design review committee, as a way to deal with temporary
signage left up longer than necessary.
Development fees will also double
should work commence prior to the issue of development permits.
Staff said the fines reflect the cost of
staff investigations, processing the paperwork and information related to the
infractions. Bylaws can be read in full on
the Town of Strathmore website.

The word endemic describing a disease means

that the disease is constantly present in a specific
geographical area. In October 2016, North, Central
and South America had the distinction of being the
first area of the world that was free from endemic
measles. It is however still common in Asia, Africa,
the Pacific and some European countries. This
reinforces the importance of parents immunizing
their children against this disease.
Health Canada has an almost impossible job
monitoring all the health products being imported
from overseas.
Some contain unauthorized
substances that could be dangerous to Canadians.
These products are often touted as being treatments
for obesity or impotence and may contain hormones
or even steroids. Before you buy any product, talk
about it with your doctor or pharmacist.
It bears repeating that there is an anti-cancer
vaccine available in Canada for HPV-related cancers.
Currently, all provinces have funded programs for
giving the vaccine to girls and some will fund boys
receiving the vaccine. The vaccine has been proven
to reduce the risk of cancers of the cervix, penis and
vagina and there is some evidencse it will lower
the risk of mouth and throat cancers. Ensure your
adolescents are immunized with this vaccine.
Snoring of a spouse is often a source of humour.
Words like bandsaw and power mower are often
used to describe the sound. But snoring could be a
symptom of something more serious.sleep apnea
which could cause problems with the heart, blood
pressure and even lead to a stroke. Encourage that
snoring spouse to get medical advice. It could bring
peace back into the bedroom and save a life.

Painted quilts continue to gain interest

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

When the painted quilt project came
to life after Hope Bridges won Strathmores Lets make a Pitch contest in
June of 2014, they had but an inkling of
how popular the workshops and project would become.
We have had more requests to make
more [painted quilts]; hopefully we will
hold more workshops later this year,
said Hope Bridges coordinator, Wanda
Reinholdt.
So far, the not-for-profit organization has used about two thirds of their
$10,000 in winnings from the contest to
create 13 unique and colourful 4 ft. by
4 ft. painted quilts that can be hung outside of businesses around Strathmore.
To date, nine painted quilts are hanging on buildings in town, and one will
soon be hung inside Westmount School
Playschool. This particular quilt will be
made into a sign instead of going on
the side of the building, which is something new to Hope Bridges, currently in
the process of getting permits to put the
sign up in spring.
Three completed painted quilts are
still looking for a home. They are free
to display, and Hope Bridges encourages business to take part. The process is
simple: a Hope Bridges facilitator meets

Hope Bridges has three

quilts that are currently
available to be installed
onto the outside walls of
businesses in Strathmore.
The painted quilt project
has created 13 quilts to
date and hopes to have
more workshops take
place later this year.

with a business, shows photographs of

the available quilts, an application is
filled out and the location submitted to
the Town of Strathmore.
All supplies and facilitation is
brought to the public for free, said Reinholdt. Even for businesses to put a
quilt up, it is free, she said.
Fortis has been volunteering time and
equipment to help hang quilts on buildings.
Workshops to create more painted
quilts will be held later this year.
We can accommodate anyone who
would like to take part, said Reinholdt.
We have individuals from all experiences and backgrounds.
The creation of the quilts can happen in three different ways, or as of a
mixture of all three: first, some building
owners have given specific requests for
specific designs they would like to put

on their building; second, some participants have completely designed their

own quilt with their thought-up pattern and colours; and lastly, the painted
quilt facilitator has come up with a few
designs, or has given ideas and suggestions for participants to build from.
After the design is created, the boards
are primed, painted and sealed with
outdoor paint so they will be protected
from the elements and weather damage
while on the side of the businesses.
Hope Bridges is currently in discussions with another organization in
Strathmore to create a mobile phone
application, which shows the trail or
location of the painted quilts currently
hanging around Strathmore.
For more information about taking
part in a future workshop, contact Hope
Bridges Society at 403-983-3640 or visit

Paint update
Real Deals on Home Dcor held a beginners
plaster paint class where students brought in a
small piece of furniture to learn painting techniques on Jan. 11. The class taught students
how to properly paint with plaster paint, which
can be painted onto any surface without needing to sand, strip, or seal. Real Deals holds a $50
beginners paint class every month, as well as
a project class every month. Owner, Di Cozart
hopes to inspire students to give new life to old
furniture.

Annexation of land to town

Continued from Page 1
The 75 per cent road ban means that farmers farming on
the north side of the proposed annexation area would not be
able to move their trucks and equipment onto the roads and
would have no legal access to their fields. They would either
need to constantly apply for daily permits to move their farm
equipment on and off the property, or else sneak onto their
own land and risk getting ticketed for using the banned road.
Corbin is also concerned about the maintenance of the road.
Currently, the road is maintained by the county; once annexed
it would be maintained by the Town of Strathmore.
That road (township road 244) is getting busier and busier
every day, said Corbin. During a snow storm, the road in
front of my house, which is taken care of by the county, is
usually cleared twice before I even leave for work. And the
road east that the town takes care of wont be plowed for
hours. That road is a death trap, she said, adding that she
hopes the town will have enough employees to maintain the
extra stretch of highway once the land is annexed.
For me this annexation is dependent on this road, said
Brenda Knight, division five councillor for Wheatland County.
Its the developer that requested [the land] to be annexed, not
the county, nor the town.
I would like to talk with the town and show them that we
can use the tax revenue (from the proposed annexed land) to
make sure that township road 244 is a good road. It needs to
be paved instead of a cold mix, and either be a heavy haul
road or be non-bannable, she said.
Knight said developers from the different communities on
the north end of town must all contribute to help build a
good and safe paved road. They were originally supposed to
go back later and fix up the roads instead of leaving it a cold
mix, but she said that never happened.
For me this is not a hard task. This is between the developers and the municipalities. This road should be built all the
way out and go right around the Town of Strathmore, said
Knight. Then there will be a bypass route that can be used
by truckers and farmers, or if an accident happens on Hwy. 1.
Beunder noted that a similar situation arose between
Okotoks and M.D. of Foothills.
338 Avenue on the north side of Okotoks is a designated truck route for the same reason. There are a lot of empty trucks and gravel trucks and agricultural trucks running
through there, said Beunder, adding that the roads are a
function of development itself. When physical development
occurs, [developers] are required to upgrade the roads as the
communities are occupied.
She added that when a community gets to a certain trip rate,
i.e. number of vehicles on the road, it triggers the infrastructure improvement.
We need to make sure as elected officials that these roads,
when theyre built, are built right, said Knight. They need to
be non-bannable so there is a clear access road around the
town, and that they are big and wide so that the residents
who use them are safe.
Its not about who uses what roads because we are all
taxpayers. Currently that road is not built for the volume that
is going through there right now, she added. There should
be a benefit to all residents, regardless of what is happening.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Howard and Karen Roppel

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
The Roppel family came from Central Germany about 1850, and settled in Bruce County, Ont.
Howard Roppels father, Simon, was born there
in 1886, and moved to Rockyford in March 1918
with his wife Mary, and his two brothers, George
and Louis. They began farming 4.5 miles northnorthwest of Rockyford.
Howard was born in Calgary,
and attended Rosebud Valley School from Grades 1 to
6. When the school closed, he
was bused to Rockyford in an
ancient seven passenger Packard probably the first school
bus in the area. After graduating from Grade 12, he studied
architecture for a year in Winnipeg, before deciding to farm. He
graduated from the University
of Alberta in Edmonton with a
degree in agriculture in 1955.
From ages 8 through 12, Howard took piano lessons, until the
teacher stopped coming from
Calgary. He enjoys music, plays
the piano daily, and has been
involved with music at Rockyford United Church for over 50 years, singing in
choirs and playing the organ.
As a teenager, Howard was very involved with
the 4-H grain club, tending a wheat plot during
the summer, and preparing grain samples in the
fall for the Drumheller 4-H, which involved eight
grain clubs. The top samples went to the Royal
Winter Fair in Toronto, and in 1951, Howard won
the world wheat championship. He travelled to
Toronto to accept his prize, and the CNR Trophy
was displayed at the CIBC Bank in Rockyford.
Previously, he had won the provincial plot
championship twice, which included an award
trip to Toronto for 4-H members from across the
country. As a spin off, Howard was a pedigreed
seed grower for years, and a Rockyford 4-H crops

club leader.
After graduating from the University of Alberta,
Howard became active with farm organizations as
an Alberta Wheat Pool delegate, a Unifarm director, and with the seed growers association.
Karen was born and raised in Edmonton, the
eldest of three sisters. She attended the University of Alberta, and graduated in psychology in
1961. During her time at university, she befriended Lois Griffiths of Rockyford, and while spending
a weekend with Lois, attended
Rockyford United Church where
she met Howard. They were married in June 1961, and have four
children Alison, Mark, David
and Stephen and four grandchildren. They continue to live
on the farm, and in the house
they built 48 years ago.
Karen is an avid gardener,
and in 2002 her garden was featured in Harrowsmith magazine.
Throughout the years, she was
very involved in the Girl Guides,
and has served as a Girl Guide
captain, camp advisor and commissioner.
Karens church involvement
began at Rockyford United
Church, and continued to the
United Church Women in Alberta, where she has served as conference president,
the national church and Alberta Northwest Conference president. Karen enjoys reading, and has
participated in a Canadian literature class in Calgary for many years.
Howard and Karen both love to travel, and enjoy
seeing new people and places. On a recent cruise
in South America, they visited the Falkland Islands
and made contact with a descendant of the Rudd
family, which a century ago owned much of the
land where they live and farm today.
The main changes they note are the decline in
small towns and villages in this area, large farm
sizes and the new technology available in farm
equipment.

Town water is sustainable

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

The Town of Strathmores sustainability committee is promoting the message to use tap water
instead of buying bottled water.
The committee recently updated town council on the success of the water trailer, donated
to them by the 55 Plus Summer Games held in
Strathmore, and used for community events in the
future.
Our flagship event was Canada Day last year.
We had good support from other vendors there,
said Johnathan Moore, spokesperson for the committee. Our big thing was getting people behind
using tap water and reusing bottles, rather than
buying bottled water.
In 2013, Canadians used 2.4 billion litres of bottled water. There is a myth that bottled water is
safer than tap water. In some instances, such as
contaminated water supplies, that is true. However, in normal conditions, there are stringent requirements on the treatment and monitoring of

municipal potable water. In Canada, bottled water

is regulated as a food and therefore, it must comply with the federal governments Food and Drugs
Act and Regulations. But the industry is self-monitored, and facilities that package the bottled water
may get inspections only once every three years.
The Strathmore water wagon holds 400 gallons
of water. Refilling a reusable container from such
a facility can reduce bottles sent to landfills. After
each event, the wagons tank is emptied and sterilized. Sanitary disinfectant wipes are used to keep
taps clean at events.
Similar water wagons are used at events like
fashion week in New York and in various parks
across Canada.
All in all, this project has been a major accomplishment for the town, said Moore. Not only is
it a way to educate people on the negative effects
of water bottles, it is also a way to introduce new
initiatives down the road.
The sustainability committee has more than 10
projects it is currently working on to help recycling and reuse in Strathmore.

Badlands Search and Rescue

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Students of the Badlands Search and Rescue
(BSAR) team have spent nine months in pre-training and formal training, learning many different
skills so they can accompany the team on search
and rescue missions in the future.
Following a written exam on Jan. 19, they will all
be certified search and rescuers.
They have all learned to be an effective member
of different teams and roles and how to do different types of searches, said Malen Vidler, BSAR
operations director.
Badlands Search and Rescue is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to providing search and rescue services throughout Wheatland County, Kneehill County and beyond.
Vidler, who has been with the team for 18 months,
has taken the basic search and rescue course, mantracking and a search management course. He is
the main director for training as well as one of
three search managers who organize teams when a
search gets called in.
We are a voluntary emergency response unit,
said Vidler.
The BSAR team has been in operation for six
years and is one of 38 units in Alberta. They have
been called out to and involved in 20 search and
rescue missions. They are typically tasked out by a
law enforcement agent such as the RCMP or Calgary Police, or if it is a civil response, then they
are tasked out by municipal government agencies.
Searches the team takes part in include missing
persons, search and rescues and evidence searches.
I took search management training and learned
that there wasnt a search and rescue team for the
area, and that if a team was needed in Wheatland
or Kneehill counties, it would be a minimum wait
time of three hours for a response from a search
and rescue unit, said Scott Campbell, founder
and president of BSAR. And thats just not good
enough.
To date, BSAR has trained and fully certified 30
search and rescuers. Currently, they have 20 fully
certified search and rescuers who are still active
within their organization.
Its a great global organization to be part of. I
love helping people and this is a need for the community. This is another way for the people in our
community to volunteer and help and give back,
said Campbell.

For those interested in joining the organization,

you must be at least 18 years of age, be a resident
of Alberta, have a clear criminal record, and live
within the response range. Being standard first aid
certified is also a pre-requisite to the course.
There is a $50 yearly fee, which allows participants to take part in any courses that BSAR and
Search and Rescue Alberta, which is their overseeing body, offers to its members.
Before becoming a certified search and rescuer,
students must pre-train before they take formal
training, which involves 20 hours of classroom
work and 20 hours of field work, a full blown mock
search, and they must pass a written examination.
Our requirements arent simple; we ask certain
things from our members. Its a big commitment
from them, said Vidler.
Training includes learning how to conduct and
participate in four different types of searches, as
well as recovery efforts, evidence searches, building improvised shelters, means of purifying water,
helicopter landing, survival techniques for themselves and injured people, lost person behaviour,
and extensive training in navigation and communications.
The program is flexible because members are
spread out, but the training classes take place
on the first Saturday and third Thursday of every
month.
A lot of these skills are perishable skills where
if you dont practice them, youll lose them, said
Campbell.
Because of this, once certified, members are expected to participate in at least six training sessions
a year, and in one mock or real search and rescue
mission.
Along with the annual fee, members are also required to buy their own equipment, such as quality
hiking boots with good ankle support and a top
quality 40 litre backpack, a good quality compass,
gaiters, tarps, a search and rescue uniform, a way
to cook a meal (portable stove and water purifier as
well as food), bug juice and a bug shirt, sunscreen,
survival blanket, survival biffy bag, hiking poles
and a personal first aid kit. The costs of these items
can range anywhere from $400 to $2,400, depending on the quality of gear a participant gets.
The non-profit organization itself also has a lot of
equipment on hand for search and rescue missions.
This equipment is gained through donations and
fundraising events throughout the year. The BSAR
team are always looking for sponsors to help fund

more equipment and gear.

BSAR is holding their annual general meeting on Feb. 4 at
the Badlands Recreation Facility in Drumheller, and anyone
is welcome to attend. They will also be running recruiting
sessions in March in Strathmore and Drumheller and in surrounding communities for those who are interested in learning about the organization or in joining and receiving training.
For more information about BSAR, visit their website (badlandsearchandrescue.com) or visit their Facebook page (facebook.com/badlandsar).
We are always looking for motivated people and people
who want to give back. I believe there is a role for everybody,
said Campbell. We have a lot of expectations, but it is a very
worth-while organization and we surpass expectations.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Rockys Bakery third time lucky!

To the Editor
How many times, or more times do I have to watch
this? How many times do I thank somebody for looking out? One of these times, there is going to be an
ambulance parked out front of Rockys Bakery taking someone away on a stretcher or worse, and Im
not trying to sound morbid!
Yes! Tuesday afternoon again, thanks to angle
parking, a vehicle came in on the angle, overran the
sidewalk and hit my building!
Looking at the skid marks on the sidewalk, had a
man, woman, boys or girls been walking right there
at that time, they would have been crushed and
pinned into my building.
One can only imagine the worst case scenario
there. My building can be fixed. Its been fixed before! Human beings can or sometimes cant be fixed.
Elisa, my business partner next door at Hidden Secrets, and my wife Ellie, also cringe and get scared

every time they see a vehicle pull in on the angle,

maybe too fast, and their front wheels are sitting on
the sidewalk, summer or winter.
Strathmore its time!
Its time to remove angle parking!
It is unsafe and dangerous! A lot of communities
are doing just that for these reasons.
Lets not hope the next time a building gets hit
downtown and a pedestrian is on the sidewalk between the vehicle and the building, and it is one
of your loved ones, because that possibility is VERY
real.
Believe me, I have seen it first-hand three times on
my building alone.
Angle parking has to go!
I welcome anybody to come in and talk with me
on this matter.

Langdon School to host Headstrong Summit

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter
Langdon Schools staff and Grade 6
to 9 students will be attending their
first ever Langdon Headstrong Summit
on Jan. 27.
The summits main goal is to share
stories, have discussions and break
down the stigma surrounding mental
health, said Langdon School Grade 9
teacher, Susanne Moskal.
The idea for the summit came from
a group of students and staff members
who attended a similar summit through
the Canadian Mental Health Commission at Mount Royal University in Cal-

gary this past October. There, the group

was exposed to a tremendous amount
of valuable information on the topic of
mental health, and they decided that it
would be an incredible event to set up
for their own school.
There will be discussions, stories and
resources from speakers and organizations sharing about mental health and
ideas. The idea is to learn what mental
health and illness is, and to break down
the stigma attached to these areas, said
Moskal. Speakers will share stories
around addictions, grief, anger, choices, depression, sleep, physical activity,
healthy eating and mental illness.
The day will include breakout sessions, panel discussions and a resource
fair.
One of the speakers will be Cole
Whalley, brother to one of Langdon
Schools staff members. Whalley will

share his personal story about his battle with depression and addiction.
These are real stories, stories that affect all people in society, said Moskal.
Other speakers will include six
speakers from the Headstrong organization, speakers from the Mental
Health Commission, Alberta Addictions
Services, Stepping Stones to Mental
Health, Synergy, D.O.C. Personal Training, JennDYoga, ConnecTeen, Calgary
Communities Against Sexual Abuse and
Calgary Sexual Health.
One in five youth in Canada struggle
with mental health, said Moskal. Mental health and illness are important topics that students are facing, related to
and affected by.

Buy-Low Foods will also be helping

to support the breakfast and lunch for
participants of the event. There will
even be a surprise musical guest attending the summit.
Along with this summit helping students to better understand mental
health and illness, it also directly relates to subjects they learn in health
class. Students have been creating posters displaying research on a variety of
different mental illnesses. Discussions
surrounding mental health, illness and
stigma will be continuing in health
class after the summit, and students
will work on more projects using the
knowledge they will have gained from
the Headstrong Summit.

MINOR HOCKEY WEEK

Annually across the country we
celebrate Minor Hockey Week. The
week is a way to recognize the sport for
its positive influence and benefits to the community, while also recognizing the people who
bring it all together, from organizers to players.

Langdon product Kaia Borbandy of

the Rocky Mountain Raiders wins a
puck battle in the corner against Jacelyn
Scott of the Lloydminster Junior Steelers Jan.
14 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Borbandy
was named to the Alberta Female Hockey League
Bantam Elite All-Star game and represented the
South Division.

Borbandy debuts in
all-star game
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL) honoured their best bantam players during the Elite AllStar game Jan. 14 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
It was extra special for Rocky Mountain Raiders
centre Kaia Borbandy. The Langdon product got to
skate in the inaugural all-star game with her family
in attendance.
It was a great experience to be a part of this event.
Not too many girls get the opportunity to play in it
and represent where they come from, said the second-year Borbandy.
It was nice to see her rewarded for her efforts. She
trains very hard on her own, said Raiders head coach
Dustin Borbandy. She is one of the first ones in on
the fore check and one of the first ones back on the
back check. Her line has had several opportunities at
the net this season. Hopefully they get a couple more
pucks in for their effort in the second half.
The league divided the teams into a north and
south team, and gave them the full NHL treatment
with player introductions, an anthem and a topsyturvy logo on a screen in one of the corners.
Strathmore put a bid in and we thought they
would do a good job with it. We know that they are
one of the draw zones for the Rocky Mountain team,

so there was a chance to have some local girls playing in the game, said Hockey Alberta coordinator of
programs and events, Melissa Drake.
The south squad carried the majority of the play
through the first period, but headed into the intermission 0-0.
Borbandy was zipping around the ice. Starting at
left wing, she was lined up with Hayleigh Craig (Lethbridge Cyclones) and Dylan Norrie (Olds Grizzlys).
She had a pair of cracks at loose pucks in front of
the net in the second, but couldnt jam one in, as the
north led 1-0 after two.
I would see these girls in the regular season and
think that they were really amazing. It was a great
experience to play with them, said Borbandy.
Things have been trending upwards for the Borbandy family in 2017. Earlier in the month, her older sister Emma won the Macs AAA Midget Hockey
Tournament. The 14-year-old was very deserving of
her all-star nod. She leads the Raiders with six points,
and was joined by teammates Sydney Trotter and
Shaye Parkinson.
I wish all of my teammates were here to experience it with me, but Im glad that they were here with
me. They were both very deserving, said Borbandy.
The Raiders will resume action Jan. 21 when they
host the Grizzlys in Okotoks.

Rockyford hockey stable entering the New Year

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
It was business as usual in 2016
for the Rockyford Minor Hockey
and Ringette Association (RMHRA).
The program runs teams from
tyke up to bantam with muchneeded help from volunteers.
Its pretty simple. Without our
volunteers, we wouldnt have a
program, said vice-president Brad
Munchrath. They help out with
everything from coaching to run-

ning the rinks.

Munchrath has been on the RMHRA board for seven years now
and is getting ready for tourney
and playoff season coming up.
We had a pretty good year last
year, but we got our big events
coming up in January and midFebruary that we are all looking
forward to, said Munchrath.
Rockyford will host a tournament in January, and will prepare
for playoffs at the end of the season later in February.
On the horizon, Munchrath sees

a slight issue with the numbers.

The older teams currently have
more players than some of the
start-up levels, so he realizes there
might not be a lot of players at the
atom and peewee levels down the
road.
I think that is just the way it
goes in cycles over the years, said
Munchrath.
But those are issues for another
time. Right now, he is focused on
trying to get all of his teams into
the playoffs in their respective
tiers for Zone 6.

WAA hits
the quarter
century mark
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Athletic Association (WAA) is celebrating a banner
year. The successful hockey organization turns 25, making it one of the
oldest minor hockey programs in the
province.
To help celebrate the quarter-century mark, an alumni tournament
was held Dec. 28-30 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
There were guys from some of
our first teams, all the way up to
guys from our graduating class last
year, said president Murray Brown.
It was a lot of fun, there were plenty
of stories and laughs going around.
Last year (2016) was very good to
the WAA. It was highlighted by the
bantam Warriors capturing the South
Central Alberta Hockey League
(SCAHL) crown, and the midget
Chiefs being named south division
champs.
The success of last season has
rolled over into this season, as the
Chiefs sit perched atop the south division once again, five points ahead
of the Medicine Hat Hounds. At 202-2, the Chiefs have barreled over
the competition this season, helped
by a 12-game win streak. They own
the league leader board with three
players in the top-four in points. In
net, Ty Tarvyd leads the league with
a stunning .940 save percentage and
1.38 goals against average.
The defending bantam SCAHL
champs started slow, but began to
turn things around entering the
holiday break. They are only three
games back in the win column from
a top-three seed in the south. The
Warriors are led offensively by Kage
Yellowfly (11G, 10A), Adam Kirkpatrick (9G, 10A) and Nolan Bailey
(11G, 6A). In net Logan Grant carries
a 6-4-2 record to go with a respectable .900 save percentage and 3.01
goals against average.
After taking a year off from coaching the peewee Braves, Keith Klemmensen and Slavo Halkovic are trying to instill a good work ethic in
their young players.
With Chestermere getting its own
team this year, that kind of lightened
the pool from guys to choose from.
Im glad Keith and Slavo are back,
and the team seems to be coming
along nicely, said Brown.
The Braves currently sit seventh in
the north division, led by Nolan Mahussier (10G, 12A), Tyler Fairbairn
(14G, 8A) and Philip Raycroft (12G,
8A). The goaltending has been split
down the middle, with Matthew Dovichak going 2-7-1 with a .840 save
percentage and a 4.45 GAA, while
Rhett Harten sits 3-8 with a .820 save
percentage and a 5.09 GAA.

MINOR HOCKEY WEEK

SMHA to expand
in New Year
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
Despite the downtick in the economy, the Strathmore Minor Hockey
Association (SMHA) has seen inflation in their numbers program-wide.
SMHA went from having just under 400 skaters last year to 455 this
year, while projecting to add three
more teams next season.
We were pretty shocked to see
our numbers rise like they did considering the way the economy has
been lately, said SMHA secretary
Natalie Haslund.
Having a finger on the pulse of
the market has seemed to help improve things. They made payments
easier on families during these difficult times by offering extended payment plans.
Running ripe with numbers, the
SMHA offers programs all the way
from Intro to Hockey, Timbits, up
to the midget level, with the number of teams being maxed out along
the way.
Even the girls programs are on
the rise. One of the marquee events
of the New Year happened Jan. 14

when the Strathmore Family Centre

hosted the inaugural Alberta Female Hockey League Elite All-Star
game.
Its events like that that help grow
awareness of female hockey in this
area. Our numbers for the girls
teams are up, and we are looking
to add an atom program next year,
said Haslund. We want to give the
girls another option other than ringette and help build competiveness
at an early age.
The season of prime time events
put on by the SMHA started back in
November when they hosted a successful 20-team atom tournament.
Last December, SMHA was granted the rights to host another major event, the midget A provincials,
running March 23-29 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The tournament will feature the Top 10 teams
from across Alberta, including the
host Strathmore Storm.
Haslund and the rest of the SMHA
will have their hands full the next
couple of months as they try to land
volunteer support and put together
what they hope will be a fantastic
tournament.

Spartans stumble
at tourney
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School Spartans senior
boys basketball team are hoping that by exposing themselves to different teams, they educate
themselves which, in turn, will help them out
down the road.
The Spartans entered their second straight
weekend tournament, this time in Beaumont,
going 1-2.
The Spartans dropped the opener Jan. 13 10090 to the West Central High School Rebels from
Rocky Mountain House, in what was the Spartans best shooting performance of the weekend,
nailing 47 per cent of their field goals.
John Le May poured in a tournament-high 34
points on 10-of-14 shooting to go with a pair of
triples and knocking down 12-of-18 free throw
attempts. Ryan Edwards picked up 17 points after connecting on 4-of-10 shots.
Rocky Mountain House was a pretty good
team. We were getting our shots to fall, but
we just couldnt stop anyone on defence, said
Spartans head coach Matt Laslo.
Playing on the consolation side, the Spartans
smoked the Cold Lake High School Royals 8244.
Back from his holiday vacation, Caleb Funk
turned in his strongest performance of the tourney, scoring 15 points on 7-of-16 shots. Senior
guard Mackenzie Bain also turned in his best
performance, shooting 5-for-9 for 13 points and
dialed up three 3-pointers.
Its great to have Caleb back with us, said
Laslo. Hes really good down low, hes a big
body and provides a big presence for us at the
rim.

Hawks soar in tourneys

Strathmore High School Spartans senior boys guard Mackenzie Bain looks to knock down a mid-range jumper Jan. 11

High School gym.

In the consolation final Jan. 14, the Spartans

were bested 95-76 by the H.J. Cody School Lakers.
Le May led the way once again with 31 points
on 14 shots, Funk recorded 12 points, and Isaiah Simwamu and Kashtin Running Rabbit both
pulled 10 points.
We faced some pretty strong teams and
learned what we need to work on, said Laslo.
Its good to see the rest of the province. We
will use it as a measuring stick and a better perspective of where we stand against some of the
better teams.
Earlier in the week, the Spartans downed the
0-4 Oilfields High School Drillers 94-57 Jan. 11
during Foothills Athletic Council action at the
Strathmore High School gym.
The Spartans (4-1) resumed the Strathmore rivalry game Jan. 18 when they travelled to Holy
Cross Collegiate to take on the Hawks (2-3). The
Spartans doubled up the Hawks 80-40 in the
season opener.

Great
win!
The U16A Strathmore
Ice captured the gold
medal in the Friends
on Ice tournament with
a 7-5 win Jan. 8 over
the Edmonton Ambush
U16A in Red Deer.
They went undefeated
through the round robin
stage and are coached
by Randal Praeker,
Kathy Eizten, Cam
Summerfelt and Gabi
LeMonie.

The Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks senior boys basketball team returned from the Badlands with a 1-2 record in
the Drumheller tournament.
Playing the host Drumheller Valley Secondary School Dynos in the opener Jan. 13, the Hawks were outscored by 15 in
the third quarter, going on to lose 73-69.
Shooting guard Alex Nwoyes tourney-high 31 points led
the Hawks, going 12-for-29 with 11 rebounds. Luke Sproul
shot 50 per cent from the floor on 18 shots, finishing with 18
points with 11 boards.
Nwoye led the Hawks, scoring 27 points in a 76-62 loss to
the J.R. Robson School Marauders on Jan. 14. Taking 25 shots
and connecting on 10 of them, he also sank five-of-10 threepoint attempts, to go with 10 rebounds.
Landon Osachuk and Sproul both registered 13 points. Osachuk yanked down 10 boards and three assists, while Sproul
contributed six boards and three steals.
The Hawks won their final game of the weekend when they
bounced the Acme School Redmen 62-54.
Nwoye and Sproul were strong once again, Nwoye with 24
points, six rebounds and four assists, while Sproul finished
with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
The Hawks hosted the Strathmore High School Spartans at
the HCC gym Jan. 18.
JUNIOR A BOYS GRAB SILVER
There was plenty of action among the junior varsity Hawks
teams, as they also participated in tournaments this weekend.
The boys junior A Hawks hosted their own tournament over
the weekend at the HCC gym and bagged the silver medal.
In the championship, the Olds Koinonia Christian High
School Royals stuffed the Hawks 50-30.
The Foothills for Learning Academy opened the second
game on a 12-2 run over the Hawks, but HCC responded,
cutting the lead to 16-10 at half. A strong third quarter guided
the Hawks to the 41-36 victory.
The Hawks received a balance attack on offence, as they
stung the Hugh Sutherland Kodiaks 66-23 in the opener.
JUNIOR A GIRLS SPLIT A PAIR
The girls junior A Hawks played in a tournament at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir over the weekend. Taking on the host Spartans Jan. 13, the Hawks lost 38-11.
On Jan. 14, the Hawks started slow, but made a strong second half push, only to fall short in the end 28-18 to the Hugh
Sutherland Kodiaks.
Hitting their stride in the finale, the Hawks displaced the
Ecole Francophone DAirdrie 27-20, to finish seventh on the
weekend.
JUNIOR B BOYS GO 1-2 AT TOURNEY
The junior B boys also played a tournament at StrathconaTweedsmuir, in a triple-header on Jan. 13.
They took on the host Spartans in the opener, falling 32-20.
In the sandwich game, they dumped the Rosemary School
37-19. In the finale, the Glenmore Christian Academy Royals
clipped the Hawks 35-19.

Spartans shred Mustangs

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School Spartans girls basketball team built a massive lead early and coasted to the finish with enough gas in the tank.
The Spartans smacked the Highwood High
School Mustangs 54-33 in Foothills Athletic Council action Jan. 11 at the Strathmore High School
gym.
In what was their first game in three weeks,
the Spartans came out firing, leading the 2-2 Mustangs 20-8 after the first quarter that featured a
pair of triples from Kaylin Larson and six points
of Allie Davidsons 18 points.
We came out with a little rust. We didnt play
as well as we could have, but we played good
enough to win, and thats all that matters, said
Spartans head coach Dion Galandy.
Our defence was good in the first half, but we
kind of let go in the second half.
Holding the Mustangs to one field goal in the
second quarter, the Spartans (4-1) built a 40-16
lead by the end of the third.
In the fourth, the Mustangs began to chip away,
albeit barely.
Scoring eight straight points inside the Spartans paint, the Mustangs were beginning to take
advantage of the tired legs of the Spartans. The
Mustangs more than doubled the production in
the fourth, scoring 17 points.
We just need to step it up and play like we
can, said Galandy when asked about what needed to change about the Spartans defence late.
The Spartans also led tape-to-tape and probably werent as sharp as they were at tip off.
Davidson remained sharp throughout, nearly
completing a rare four-point play on a kick out
pass from Larson.
Allie was really focused tonight. She did a
good job playing and defending, getting steals
and getting back on defence, said Galandy.

Kings keyed by new crew

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings injected two new
players acquired just before the roster deadline Jan.
11 and received immediate impact.
The Kings inked local product Blair Roszell, and
Christian Halman from Brooklin, Ont., giving their
lineup some much needed depth.
Roszell came up through the Wheatland Athletic
Association ranks, but wasnt able to play for the
Kings while he was attending the University of Lethbridge. Now back home with a good job, Roszell is
ready to rock.
We have been chatting with him throughout the
year. Now that he got his work all sorted out, we
are happy to have him, said Kings assistant coach
Keenan Desmet. He is a big presence on the blue
line at 6-foot-4 and that will be key against some of
the better goal-scoring teams.
Roszell has one assist in his first two games as he
is paired with alternate captain Hayden Vanderploeg.
Halman is a bit of a different story.
He came out from Ontario to try out with the
Golden Rockets of the Kootenay International Junior
Hockey League this fall, but broke his hand in camp.
He returned to Ontario, but has since made his way
back out west. Arriving via word of mouth, Halman
was put in contact with the Kings through defensemen Josh Smith.
We didnt know too much about him, we kind
of took a chance on him, said Desmet. Its a good
thing we did; he has impacted our games right away.
Halman netted the game-tying goal in his debut
Jan. 10 against the Banff Academy Bears (9-19-2) and
another against the High River Flyers (6-24-2) Jan. 13.
Christian is a smaller guy, but very physical and
a great skater. Both additions have great shots and
have helped us out offensively, said Desmet.
Halman netted four goals and eight points this
season as a member of the Tottenham Steam of the
Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League. He also

scored the fourth goal of the first period as the Kings

out-gunned the Flyers 6-4 at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex.
Three of the Kings four first period goals came
from their strong cycling line of Kristian Ayoungman,
Brooker Pretty Youngman and George Montour.
Ayoungman scored the first two, followed by Ryan
Grasdahl registering his fourth of the season.
For Kelly it was his fourth straight appearance
between the pipes with regular number one Brady
Hoover still recovering from a lower-body injury.
Kelly has been working hard at practice and its
finally paying off, said Kings captain Keenan Ogle.
Kelly was buried in the depth chart early in the
year, often in the stands watching Hoover and backup Pierre Wiederhold.
Seizing his opportunity in net, Kelly has gone 2-1
with a .882 save percentage in his first chunk of regular ice time.
Thats the way hockey goes sometimes. It was unfortunate that Hoover got hurt, but we needed someone to step up and he has certainly earned his spot
in the lineup, said Desmet.
Ogle is experiencing his most productive year
in his final year with the Kings (12-15-4). With 22
points, the captain has come up clutch lately.
With their backs against the wall in a shootout last
week against the Medicine Hat Cubs, he scored to
extend it, leading to a win.
Tied at four with 4:55 remaining in the third, he
scored the winner against the Flyers from Kody Hammond.
I couldnt tell you, Ogle said, when asked about
what he has been doing to come up in the clutch
lately. I just try to bear down when I get my chances
and hope they go in.
Ogle narrowly missed in the shootout against the
Banff Academy Bears, failing to extend the game, as
the Bears brushed back the Kings 4-3 Jan. 10 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Veterans Matt Thomson and Brenden Moore were
forced to watch helplessly from the stands as they

each served a one-game suspension for picking up

their third fight of the season.
Vanderploeg opened the scoring on a bomb from
the point at the 8:30 mark of the first period. The
Bears added a pair of goals; the Kings responded
with Pretty Youngmans 20th of the season with 4:40
to go in the first.
Jake Huculak got an unassisted shorthanded snipe
for the Bears in the second and Halman made a good
first impression by tying the game with 2:48 to go in
the third.
Shooting second in the shootout, Ogle was leaned
on to tie the game once again, but missed. Daniel Nikiforov came down the ice and popped in the winner
(3-2) for the Bears third shootout win of the season.
This weekend, the Kings travel to Medicine Hat
Jan. 20 to take on the Cubs, and return to the Strathmore Family Centre to host the Ponoka Stampeders
(8-21-3) Jan. 21 at 8 p.m.

Chiefs snuff Bisons at home

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Last October, the Foothills CFR Chemicals Bisons scored 11 goals against the SSAC Boston
Pizza Athletics.
On Jan. 15, they only mustered eight shots
against the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs in a 4-2 loss
at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Chiefs and Bisons skated to a 2-2 tie earlier in the season, and recently, the Bisons stuffed
the Chiefs 5-2 in their opening game of the Macs
AAA Midget Hockey Tournament.
The Chiefs (16-4-7) might have started the season slowly, but have been gaining steam behind
the Bisons in the standings, growing more confident and making adjustments along the way.
They did a real good job plugging up their
end of the ice, said Bisons head coach Sandy
Henry. They out-worked us and we didnt win
any battles.
The Bisons (20-4-3) previous low shot total was
22 on Nov. 6 during a 2-2 tie with the Fort Saskatchewan Boston Pizza Rangers.
We knew that coming in this was a big game.
We just got caught up trying to make too many
fancy plans, said Bisons centre Brandon Machado.
Justin Travis never had to make more than three
saves in any period as the Chiefs spent quality
time in the Bisons end on the man advantage.
They finished three-for-seven on the power play.
The Bisons actually led 1-0 after the first period.
They next time Peyton Krebs sets up someone
without using a saucer pass might be the first
time. Krebs won a battle in the corner against
Ethan Schlag, turning quickly, he spotted Jackson
Salt on the other side of the net and flipped over
a saucer pass. Salt hit it right on the button, putting the Bisons up 1-0.
Tarun Fizer hit Machado from behind the net,
putting the Herd up 2-1 at the 4:12 mark of the
second period. For Machado, it was his third
point on the weekend, giving him 11 goals and

HAVE WE FORGOTTEN?
As a young child, one of the things
that I remember being drilled into
me after Christmas or birthdays,
was the fine art of saying thank
you. For gifts given. For acts of
kindness. For blessings of the
day. We were brought up saying
thank you after supper for moms
cooking. Or for dad taking us to
an event.
Thank you was a regular phrase
in our vocabulary.
It seems somehow that we have,
or are forgetting that simple
courtesy in our world. We take the
actions and positive responses
of others for granted, and dont
acknowledge them. It is as if we
have forgotten
I am always encouraged to see
a positive posting on Facebook,
or in the classified ads, or to hear
someone saying thank you when
a door is held open, or someone
lends a hand in public, but it
seems less and less frequent,
and in fact the other day, when I
saw someone say thank you, the
recipient stopped with a most
shocked look on their face, and
then stammered Well, youre
welcome.
For Christmas I received a
bracelet with a charm on it that
says, Completely Blessed,
and every time I look at it, I am
reminded of, even in struggling

25 points this season.

We are just trying to keep it simple out there.
I play with great line mates who make it easy.
My motto this year has been team success brings
personal success, said Machado.
Ben Laidlaw was strong, making 22 saves, but
picked up his second loss of the season.
In the third, Fizer took a pass leaving his zone
with his head down. Turning up ice, he got plastered by a Chiefs forward in the neutral zone.
Lying on the ice for a few moments, he had to
be helped off the ice by trainer Rebecca Thompson.
Fizer, who leads the team with 31 points, joins
other key forwards Blake Wells (23 points) and
Boaz Bassen (11 points) as players out indefinitely with upper-body injuries.
Huber drilled his 12th of the season and the
winner at the 3:15 mark of the second from Cole
Clayton and Krebs. Tyson Scott supplied one goal,
Machado finished with a goal and an assist, while
Hunter Young made 23 saves for his eighth win.
Next for the Bisons, they will host the Calgary
Northstars Jan. 22 (4:45 p.m.) on a night celebrating the billet families at the Strathmore Family
Centre.

Grizzlys take a bite of Wheatland Warriors

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Olds Grizzlys pulled off a home-and-home
series sweep of the Wheatland Warriors with a 5-2
victory Jan. 15 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
We didnt earn anything out there tonight,
said Warriors head coach Cody Brown. When
you get comfy against good, hard-working teams
like that, theyll make you look silly in a hurry.
The local double-A bantam team (8-13-2)
jumped in front 2-0 after a pair of sharp-angled
first period goals from Nolan Bailey and Kage
Yellowfly.
From there, the Grizzlys (13-6-2) took over,
scoring five times. Of their five goals, two came
on deflections, taking Grizzly-friendly bounces in
front of the net, and Mitch Tessemaker accidentally put one past his own goalie while on the
power play in the third.
The Warriors were outshot 43-22, as Corey Ross
made 38 stops in net.
The Cranbrook CPC Hornets (12-8-3) host the
Warriors Jan. 21 at Western Financial Place.

times, sad times, stressful times,

I am blessed, beyond measure.
What response can I, do I, should
I give, for the blessings, large and
small, that are mine, are ours,
each day.
Two simple words, that make a
difference, not only to me, the
recipient of something positive,
but to the person or people that
took the time to share it.
It is a new year. We are blessed
to live in a community that cares,
that stands together, that has
a local pride and compassion
beyond many. We have good
neighbors, great security
resources, a wonderful hospital,
schools of excellence, churches
of faith and care, merchants that
strive to make our town better,
a responsive town council and
staff these are just a few of
the blessings. I encourage us to
remember, two simple words,
and to share them graciously and
frequently.
Thank you for being part of our

how completely blessed we truly
are! Happy New Year.

Obituaries
FAY, Doreen Margaret
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mom
and Gran, Doreen Margaret Fay (nee
Lyle) on Thursday December 22, 2016
at the age of 95. Doreen was born in Stettler, AB on
July 2, 1921 to Jack and Hazel Lyle. She grew up in
and around the Edberg/Buffalo Lake area with her 3
siblings. She left home to attend secretarial school at
the Camrose College and there she met the love of
her life, Langley Shirras (Pete) Fay. The newlyweds
lived in Winnipeg while Pete was in the army and
that is where their eldest daughter Ada Marie (Alan)
was born. From Winnipeg the young family moved
to the family farm at Laura Saskatchewan where 3
more daughters followed Carol (Rick), Nancy (Jack)
and Candace (Jim). Doreens happiest times were
spent on the farm until Petes untimely death in 1973.
Doreen was Gran to 4 grandsons Aaron, Aric, Dylan
and Sean as well as to 2 great-grandsons Zeke and
Zane. Doreen and Pete were avid square dancers
and Doreen continued to pursue that lifelong hobby
well into her 80s. She made so many friends and
enjoyed such a healthy, active lifestyle thanks to
square dancing. Doreen was a very artistic, creative
person and an incredible seamstress. She dressed
4 daughters, numerous dolls and herself with such
style and on a shoestring budget. She worked many
different jobs in her long life but her best work was
done as Mom. Doreen was small in stature but her
friendly personality and quick wit made her stand out
above the crowd. She loved to socialize but, she also
cherished her quiet times with her books and listening to her music. Her ready smile, kind caring heart,
encouraging way, and strong determination will be
greatly missed. A celebration of Doreens life took
place on Monday January 16th at Lord of All Lutheran
Church (Strathmore) at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers
donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer
Society of Calgary (201, 222-58 Ave. S.W., Calgary,

Aage Poulsen Paul

Aage Poulsen Gron Paul peacefully passed away Friday, January
13, 2017 after a long and courageous
battle with cancer. Paul is survived by his loving wife
of 46 years, Mary; their children Scott, Jeff (Mandy),
Mark (Jillian) and Micheal (Kellie); and his grandkids,
Carson, Kiersten, Kaia, Briar and Scottie. He is also
survived by his sisters, Inga Hansen and Erna Sorensen as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Paul was born the youngest of eight children in Raby,
Denmark and was predeceased by his five brothers.
Paul immigrated to Canada in 1957. After a year in
Hamilton, he made his way to Alberta, finally settling
in Calgary with an aunt and uncle, who were well
known for helping Danish Immigrants settle in Calgary. Paul and Mary were married on New Year`s Eve
1969. Paul worked for many years as a heavy-duty
mechanic, primarily with Borgers Construction, and
then later Standard General. In 1978 Paul fulfilled his
dream and pioneering spirit to return the farming life.
He and Mary purchased a quarter section of land in
the Strathmore area. While the farm may have been
small, Paul was able to be a capable, resourceful, and
successful farmer. From growing grain and hay to
raising chickens, goats, and cattle, Paul was adept
at making the farm work, even during difficult times.
As a farmer, he had the true pioneer spirit. He had an
amazing way with animals, and was always quick to
help a neighbour in need. Paul still took an active role
in the operation of the farm today. In 2008 Paul and
Mary retired into town to begin the next chapter of
their lives. They enjoyed numerous trips to Arizona in
the winters and yearly trips to Kananaskis Lodge with
their friends. Paul took up hockey with the pensioners and senior curling. He always enjoyed a game of
cards, especially his Tuesday crib game with his buddies. Paul had a nine-year battle with myelodysplasia
and eventually leukemia. He never once complained
or let chemotherapy and transfusions change his
positive outlook on life. He was well versed in his disease and always optimistic about new research and
findings. He battled cancer until his last breath. We
are forever grateful to the amazing nurses at both the
Peter Lougheed and Strathmore Hospitals and Sagewood for the care, compassion and friendship shown
to Paul over the years. We would also like to thank
Dr. Manocha for taking such a keen interest in his
complex medical condition and to Dr Chatha for the
compassion given to Paul in his final hours. In lieu
of flowers, the family would ask that donations be
made directly to the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society (P.O. Box 2154, Strathmore, T1P 1K2). A funeral
service was held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017
at Lord of All Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m. To send
condolences, please visit Pauls obituary at www.

THANK YOUS

February 11, 1933

- January 15, 2017
Muriel passed away peacefully in the
early morning of January 15 just before her 84th
birthday. Mom was born in Sceptre, Saskatchewan
to Hilda and Stan Sutton and lived in various towns
throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. She attended
school in Hussar where she met Ralph. They were
married on October 21, 1952. They started farming
in Chancellor; then purchased land around Standard
where they settled until 2001 when they then moved
to Strathmore. Muriel was an active member of the
Standard community, volunteering for many organizations; eventually achieving a Life-Time membership in the Standard Lionettes. Muriel was predeceased by her parents, brother George Sutton, son
Patrick Mike Gregory, and granddaughter Jesse
Gregory. She is lovingly remembered by her husband
Ralph; children Terry-Ann Elder (Ronald) , Dan (Sharon), Robert (Lynn) and Brent (Kim);, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The family wishes
to thank the staff at Sagewood for the special care
that Mom received throughout her stay. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at Hope
Community Covenant Church (Strathmore) at 12:00
p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Muriels name directly to Memory Lane payable to the
Village of Standard (Box 249, Standard, AB, T0J 3G0).
Messages of condolence may be left for the family
by visiting Muriels obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca .
