Coach
Ohlsen
Interveiw

Hi all, I am Coach Ohlsen I am the Middle School P.E. teacher here at Somerset
NLV. I am very excited to be a part of this
wonderful community of staff, students
and parents. From this point forward I am
bringing Physical back to Education. I am
a proud graduate of UNLV class of 2006. I
also come to this school with a background
in fitness. I grew up in a gym, my mom
was a personal trainer, body builder and a
power lifting coach for the Special Olympics. I am a fitness instructor with 3 certifications: Body pump which is the original
barbell class that works your entire body,
RPM which is a high intensity cycle class
and Grit which is a high intensity interval training class that focuses on strength,
plyometrics and cardio. To go along with
my fitness background, I also was very into
sports growing up. I played baseball, soccer, basketball, football and roller hockey.
My goal is to help these kids grow everyday
as young adults so they can achieve success
throughout their lives.

Interviewer: What was your favorite

part about growing up in a fitness environment?
Coach: Just learning fitness at a young
age and being active.
Interviewer: What is your favorite sport
and why?
Coach: Baseball because I am good at it.
Interviewer: What is your favorite
thing about teaching P.E.?
Coach: I get to participate in the games.

7 Habits

pg 9

Habit #1: Be Proactive!pg 10

Dont be reactive, be proactive!

Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind! pg 11

Dont just start something, finish it!

Habit #3: Put first things first! pg 12

Do your work before entertainment!

Habit #4: Think Win-Win! pg 13

Dont think of it as lost to you or others, think of it as a winwin!

Habit #5: Seek first to understand then to be understood! pg 14

Dont interrupt when someones talking, listen to them then
talk!

Habit #6: Synergize! pg 15

Work together!

Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw! pg 16

Dont put yourself down, pick yourself up!

Habit 1

pg 10
Being proactive means to control
your emotions after a situation instead of quickly responding without thinking. The opposite of that
is being reactive, responding to
something abruptly. Taking control of your life is way of being
proactive. To be in control of your
life, you have to make goals and
work hard to achieve them, even if
it takes a lot of time to do.

You can do a lot of things to be proactive. When you have

somewhere to go the next day, you should pack your things the
night before. Another way to be proactive is to be accountable.
You can turn in all of your assignments in your classes on
time or just stay on task when class is in session. When youre
working on a project, you should find more than one way to do
it.
Being proactive can be very easy if you try. All you need to
do is be organized and responsible with your choices. If youre
in a fight with your friends, dont yell if they yell at you. An
alternate solution could be to calmly explain your side of the
argument. Imagine if you have a game in a couple days. You
should finish all your homework first then you can practice
for the game.

pg 11

Habit 2

Have you ever regretted something you did
without thinking it through? A habit you need
in order to be a great person in the world is to
Begin with The End in Mind! You must think
of the consequences and certain things before
they occur. You need to be able to think of the
problems you might have if you do the thing
you desire to do.
Think of what might happen if you do what
you want. For example, if someone attacks your
friend, would you attack him back? The consequence is that you might end up being suspended or expelled when you could have just told a
teacher. You must resolve it in a way you feel is
right! It would also be good for you and the person you are upset with.

If you feel like causing harm to the person causing it to you,

you should not act reactively to the situation. Use the best of his
abilities so you can focus on what is going to help you and your
mind. The mind controls every action you do, everything you
think of, and makes the decisions. You make choices that benefit you the best way. The mind can be angered by emotion when
pressed toward an assailant or someone you dislike.
You may do foolish things when people start to do stuff in a
certain way you do not agree with. These factors determine
why you do things that your brain thinks is right. You listen
to yourself and not brutal knowledge. It just comes to you when
you think of your next move in this world.

Habit 3

pg 12

These are the ways you may

put first things first. This
particular aspect can help
with school. For example,
you and your friends want
to go to the park, but have a
lot of homework. You know
you wont be able to do both.
The better decision would be
to stay home and finish your
homework. Although the
park would be more fun, your
homework will pay off better.

Prioritizing is a very important part of following

this habit. Sometimes prioritizing may be as easy
as thinking your actions through first. For example, say that your friend is receiving an award
that you promised to attend on the same day as a
completion you need to be at. You may solve this
by making a pros/cons chart and possibly consulting your friend to discover how important you being there is to them.

pg 13

HABIT 4

There are multiple situations in which youd be able to

think win-win. Thinking winwin gives you a better attitude
and more chance for success
because all youll be thinking
of is success. Although thinking win-win isnt easy, its still
a habit that you should try to
achieve at any time in any situation. In a sports team or just
sharing your talents, thinking
win-win can be used for all
problems.
One time you can think win-win is when youre on a team.
You should practice and play like youll win all of your
games. When youre playing another team, dont think negative thoughts like, Theyre better than our team.. Instead
you should think, This team is helping us get better.. If
youre team wins, dont be rude and rub it in their face, say
Good game!; you should act the same way when you lose.
Dont get upset, still congratulate the other team and be happy that you did your best and got through the game.

pg 14

HABIT 5

Everyone wants to be
heard but not everyone likes
to listen, especially in an argument. The thing is, its important to listen AND talk.
You wouldnt want someone
saying youre wrong or get in
trouble and the person didnt
listen to your point of view.
Instead of putting that feeling
on others, you should listen,
then talk. First seek to understand, then to be understood.

If youre in an argument, dont just go off on the person, listen to what they have to say. Maybe you guys will
finally agree or find a compromise. Compromising is a
simple and efficient way to end the argument, or when
youre sharing ideas with a group. Dont just share your
ideas without listening to others. Give others the chance
to share and find out what they want to do. You might
like one of their ideas better than your own, benefiting
you and the people around you.

HABIT 6

pg 15

Synergizing is the second to last habit in

the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
According to the book, you know you
have been synergizing when you End
up with an idea or result that is better
then what you started with.. This was
demonstrated well by a recent event at
our school. The middle school students
were given a chance to create and then
vote on a new student pledge due to the
displeasure they had with the last one.
This is a wonderful example of the socalled Habit of Creative Cooperation, as
it allowed students to submit their own
creative ideas and to cooperate when deciding on a final pledge.

Habit six incorporates many of the previous habits

well. It focuses on exploring alternatives. The best
examples are the 5th and the 2nd. You must use
the 5th to first understand the problem, then present your opinions. Then you must use the 2nd to
find a better long term solution.

pg 16

HABIT 7

Sharpen the Saw is the final

habit of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. It is also
one of the easiest to learn on its
own. However, you must first
build up to it. One needs to
learn all of the other habits before this one, as the 7th habit is
about renewing the other 6. It
is about taking care of yourself
and implementing the advice
from this book into your daily
life.

This habit uses all other 6 habits. First, it shows that you
must be proactive by advising you to think before acting. You must begin with the end in mind by planning
out your day. You must put first things first by prioritizing your schedule. You must Think Win Win by finding
a way for everything to work out. You must Seek Frist to
Understand, then to be Understood by listening to everyone elses issues. Finally, you must Synergize by working well with others!
