CRITERION 5. CURRICULUM
Capstone Design Course Development
It is mentioned in our Self Study Report that during the transition period of
2015-2018 the
capstone design course has been developed by focusing or emphasizing the contents of the
student final project on the design aspect while the project is conducted by a group of
students. As also noted earlier, in our current 2013-2018 Cuniculum, the student final project
it
of an
This section is prepared in response to the exit report of the PEV as a part of our 30-day
response. It describes the required capstone design course that is planned to be implemented
starting in the coming Semester II201612017 which will begin on 16 January 2017.
Following the suggestion mentioned in the report, the capstone design course is created by
converting an existing course considering that the course is compulsory, it is given in the last
senrester of the curriculum, and it has already had contents representing almost all aspects of
the program curriculum criteria. The suggested course is TM4217 Natural Gas Engineering.
It had been considered as the only course that is very much close to the criteria and represents
a culminating lesson.
The course conversion process was done within the last two months through several intensive
discussions among faculty members. It involved revisions on the syllabus, development of
weekly projects and their contents, student outcomes assignment, and project supervisor
assignment. In addition, the rnethod of course evaluation had also been developed and is
described and presented in Criterion 4 Continuous Improvement.
1.
In terms of contents, the syllabus is relatively similar to the original except for some aspects.
These include HSE (health, safety and environment), ethics, additional topics on production
and stimulation, and inclusion of some oil cases. The major difference is in the style of
projects which is now emphasizing on design aspect, assigned on a weekly basis, involves
faculty members as project supervisors of whom their course are related to the proiects.
comprises students outcomes assigned to each project, and implements a course expo
conducted at the end of the semester.
The course description and brief syllabus are now read as follows:
Course description:
This course is aimed as a capstone design course. Students design a gas field development
project using actual data comprehensively and systematically from the reservoir to the buyer.
&gLt
"t6
e 9F'4r\ '<-6n,.,
As a culminating course, the assignntents and/or projects are intended to cover a broacl of
topics previously covered by other courses. Monitored by the project advisors, students work
on the project assigned on aweekly basis as aworking teant of which each member acts as
geologist, drilling engineer, reservoir engineer and production engineer. The
final result of
the proiects is submitted as the group report. At the end af the semester students showcase
their efforts at the capstone design expo infront ofjudges comprised offaculty.
Brief syllabus:
Petrophysics, gas PW, drilling and well logging, gas in-place qnd reseryes, gas
flow in
porous media, gas well testing, gas well performance, gas flow in pipes and measurement.\,
gas processing, condensate production, gas production problems, gas reservoir ntodelilg,
gas production development, gas field production optimization, project economics, progress
andfinal reporting and presentation in an expo.
2.
The projects were developed based on the weekly lessons given previously in the original
course where some additional aspects such HSE and ethics are appended or inserted in related
projects. For example, HSE and ethics are included in drilling, gas processing, and economics
while specific topics such as stimulation are included in gas production problems and oil
cases are supplemented in gas processing in addition to the topic of condensate problems.
The projects are intended to utilize a complete set of data of a field. The students are divided
into groups consisting of 5 to 6 students. The design aspect is inclusive as the project is aimed
to build a plan of the field development" At the end of the semester each group of students
presents a complete document of the field plan development in an expo. The presentation is
judged by faculty members for completing the final grade of the course.
Table 1 shows the weekly projects with some additional topics and co-supervisors who will
manage and monitor the projects. Table 2 presents the related course in the curriculum that
must be taken by students prior to take the capstone design course. Each of the related
courses may be regarded as a pre-requisite or a co-requisite course. Also shown in the table
are the student outcomes evaluated for eaeh project. Table 3 and Table 4 show nomenclatures
for the related course natnes and superuisors, respectively.
