ABSTRACT
‘Spectral methods are presented. A trigonometrical polinomium is builtin a way that fits exactly a given function
in the grid points (collocation points) The Fourier collocation method is onc of the must used given its precision
and computational effcieney. Nevertheless, it has two disadvantages: a constant grid spacing is required and the
boundary conditions of the differential equations Lo be solved should be periodical. Once the polynomial is
‘btained, itis relatively simple to compute numerically with high precision the derivative of the function. This
is the reason why spectral methods are very convenient (o solve differential equations. In the thesis, they are
applied for the solution of some differential equations from Hydraulics.
‘Aller reviewing the theoretical foundations of spectral methods, an implicit scheme is built based in Fourier
collocation method. The method is applied to solve the one-dimensional transport of pollutant differential
equation, The great precision of the method is shown, mainly for the computation of pure convection; better
results than those reported with the common procedures of the literature are obtained with the proposed method
The theory of curvilinear grid generation is used to overcome the difficulty of a non-uniform grid. Although the
obtained results are not as good as those of a uniform grid, satisfactory values are sill gained ifa filter is used
Thére are several ways to solve problems with non-periodical boundary conditions. In the thesis, Chebyshev
collocation method ¢é-used. Iterative methods for the solution of differential equations are described. A
procedure for the solution of the gradually varied flow differential equation is developed.
‘The computational resources requirements from spectral methods are higher than those of finite difference
schemes used commonly in Hydraulics, Nevertheless, spectral methods have the advantage of resulting in the
highest possible precision for the number of grid nodes used. In the applications described in the thesis it is
shown the versatility and precision of spectral methods when applied to some problems of Hyer
