Description:
Guaifenesin is an expectorant of the Propanediol derivatives. It has an IUPAC name
of 3-(2-methoxyphenoxy) propane-1,2-diol and a chemical name of C10H14O4.

Guaisin is an elixir with clear, orange color and a sweet orange flavour.
Formulation:
5mL of Guaisin elixir contains 100mg if the active ingredient Guaifenesin.
Pharmacokinetics:
Guaifenesin is rapidly absorbed in the GI tract. It is rapidly hydrolysed in which 60%
in seven hours and excreted in the urine. It has a Half-life of approximately 1 hour.
Pharmacodynamics:
Guaifenesin is an expectorant and functions by increasing the output of
phlegm/sputum and bronchial secretions by reducing the surface tension and
adhesiveness. Ciliary action and a more productive and less frequent cough is
exhibited with the increased flow of less viscous secretions.
Indication:
For the treatment of cough as an expectorant to relieve cough by promoting the
secretion of sputum in the air passages.

Mode of Administration:
Guaisin is administered orally.

Contraindications:
Contraindicated to patients who are hypersensitive to Guaifenesin.
Warning and Precautions:
If symptoms persist, consult a physician.
Drug Interactions:
Guaifenesin has been shown to have interaction with 5-hydorxyindoleacetic acid (5HIAA) and vanilmandelic acid (VMA).
Pregnancy and Lactation:
Pregnancy Category: C
Guaifenesin is only recommended for pregnant use if the benefit outweighs risks.
Special precaution is recommended when administering Guaifenesin to lactating
women.
Adverse Effects:
Reported adverse effect of the intake of Guaifenesin, in large doses include:
Gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea and vomiting.
Overdose:
Nausea and vomiting may occur, discontinue medication and seek medical help
immediately.
Storage:
Protect from light, heat and moisture. Store at a room temperature between 15 to 30
degrees Celsius.
Dosage Forms:
Guaifenesin products are available in liquids/syrups and Immediate or sustained
release tablets.
