This principle was taught very early in the history of God's people. In Isaiah 58:6-7 we
read, "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to
undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every
yoke. Is it not to deal thy bread to the poor that are cast out to thy house? When
thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine
own flesh?" When the rich man asked the Savior what he could do to inherit eternal
life, the Savior taught, "...if thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to
the poor....". Wonderful, righteous, common King Benjamin admonished his people, "I
would that ye should import of your substance to the poor, every man according to
that which he hath, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick
and administering to their relief..." In more modern scripture, the Lord gave a
commandment that, "..they shall look to the poor and the needy, and administer to
their relief that they shall not suffer..." (D&C 38:35). A slightly more austere warning is
made in D&C 104:18 which says, "Therefore, if any man shall take of the abundance
which I have made, and impart not his portion, according to the law of my gospel,
unto the poor and the needy, he shall, with the wicked, lift up his eyes in hell, being in
torment."
One of the principle methods by which we can bless the lives of the poor is to
participate in the monthly fast wherein we fast for 2 meals in a 24 hour period and
give the equivalent of the cost of the two meals we went without to the bishop in the
form of fast offerings which goes essentially 100% for the blessing of the poor and
needly. We are never told how much that should be. My fear is that too many of the
Saints use what I call the Burger King equivalent cost for their 2 meals. In other words
they pay the least amount possible that might qualify for the cost of two meals. A small
amount of fast offering is appropriate for those who are not as well off, but as President
Spencer W. Kimball said, where it is possible, we should pay more--sometimes much,
much more. In a real sense, fast offering is a much better measure of our Christian heart
than tithing is. In tithing we are told exactly how much to pay. In fast offering, it really is
left up to us. Where we can afford to be generous, we should be.
The payment of fast offerings is obviously associated with the fast which is a wonderful
principle that helps us draw closer to our Heavenly Father. By going without food for a
couple of meals we show our real intent, our sincerity and our obedience to the Lord.
The money we pay for what we went without blesses the poor and the fast blesses us.
There is a sweet irony in this wonderful law of the fast and fast offerings. Fairly conclusive
scientific evidence now clearly demonstrates that the fast is actually good for us
physically (as well as spiritually) as manifested by greater longevity and fewer disease. It
has been identified as an independent positive factor--independent of the Word of
Wisdom which obviously blesses us physically.

Faith is recognizing God's will in a given matter and acting upon it. In Hebrews 11:1 we read,
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." It is an absolute
trust that we can discern through our spiritual senses.
President Uchtdorf teaches us that, "Faith is a power. But that power usually comes in
response to faith." Elder Neil Anderson goes on to explain that, "There is a power that can
cause things to happen that need to happen. There is a spiritual force that can stir a mortal
soul toward the spiritual, motivating deeper study in the Book of Mormon and more prayer
with real intent. Faith is a power and can cause things to happen that need to happen." As
we teach our investigators, we can promise them that if they will read, ponder and pray they
will know the Gospel is true. By your absolute faith, and instilling a desire in them we can move
them to action helping them increase their faith.
There are many examples in our scriptures of people who had great faith. By faith, Noah built
the ark. By faith, Lehi's family left Jerusalem. By faith, Abraham was willing to offer his son
Isaac. By faith, Israel passed through the Red Sea. By faith, the Brother of Jared saw the finger
of the Lord. By faith, Joseph Smith brought forth the Book of Mormon.
Some of my favorite, motivating scriptures on faith are these. As I read these scriptures my
energy level increases, I hope yours does too.
Moroni 7:33--"If ye shall have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is
expedient in me."
1 Nephi 7:12--"The Lord is able to do ALL things if they exercise faith in him."
2 Nephi 1:10--"Having power given them to do all things by faith"
D&C 8:10--"Remember without faith ye can do nothing, therefore ask in faith"
Alma 18:35-- "The spirit gives knowledge and power according to faith.
Ether 12:6--"...all they who wrought miracles wrought them by faith."
Ether 12:12He showed not himself until after their faith."
2 Nephi 27:23--"...I work not according to the children of men save it be according to their
faith."
Moroni 7:26--"whatsoever thing ye ask in faith, believing that ye shall receive it shall be
done."
Moroni 7:37-- It is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear
and minister unto men.
Moroni 27:14--"...the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith."
Mormon 9:3--"may the Lord grant that prayers be answered according to faith."
Mosiah 27:14--"Their prayers were answered according to their faith."
Ether 12:27-- If they will humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I
make weak things become strong unto them.
As we believe and exercise our faith we can accomplish the desires of our hearts. I remember
as a young girl learning this. At age 8, I had this overwhelming desire to be the fastest swimmer
in my age in the state of California. I had faith that my coaches would help me achieve this
dream. I listened intently and did all they asked at swim practice. I remember working out
HARD each day--before and after school. I developed better form, I ate exactly what they told
me to eat, I slept the exact amount of hours...I did all within my power--praying that Heavenly
Father would help me reach my goal. I visualized being the fastest swimmer, thought of it all
the time--too much--my entire focus was on my goal. Before every race, my coach would
take me to a room and we would walk through my race in my mind from the start, to the turn
to the finish. He would tell me exactly how my race would go--he would then leave the room
and I would for 20-30 minutes run over and over the race in my mind. Sure enough, I would
swim my race just as he and I visualized the race. My confidence and trust in my coach
became stronger and stronger. I soon realized that as I believed I would win. I had the
confidence because I worked hard...did all in my power and then went out and did what I
visualized. I often think of this experience and relate it to other areas in my life. Do I desire to
be the best at knowing the scriptures, the best at being obedient to the Lord, the best at
sharing the Gospel with others. Is my desire for these things just as strong as the desire I had to
be the best swimmer. Do I work as hard on these things that are so much more important? Do I
visualize my outcome...is my focus on the things that matter most?
Elder Bruce R. McConkie says, that "Faith is a gift of God bestowed for personal righteousness. It
is always given when righteousness is present and the greater the measure of obedience to
God's laws the greater will be the endowment of faith." I know faith is greater as we are
obedient and I know we gain confidence as we are obedient.
With the New Year upon us, I hope we will be obedient and do all we can to strengthen our
faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I know that as we do this we will have power to accomplish His
great work here in Spain.
