Truck running gear

with low-torsion chassis

Normally trucKs have torsicning frames

with open U section main members.
Over rough country this leads to twisting
cf the chassis and thus of the body.
That is why M.A.N. developed a lowtorsion frame for its cross-country
military t rucks. It consists of box section
main members with welded-on tubular
cross members. This novel conception
for chassis and running gear gives the
second-generation vehicles their
outstanding driving characteristics ar.d
allows high operating speeds over
difficult an d moderately diffic 1.1lt terrain.

arms. Progressively-acting helical
springs ensure that all wheels retain
ground contact, even when axle offset
is extreme.

~1.A.N.
- Outboard planetary
axles

Al l the West German army's second

generation cross-cou ntry trucks are
fitted with axles having planetary final
drives incorporated in the hubs. Apart
fro m minor adaptations to meet military
operational requirements they are
identical with the planetary fi nal drive
axles installed on civi lian trucks.
These axles are also fitted to the
7 t (4 x 2) and 10 t (6 x 4) trucks which
M.A.N. suppl ies to th e Bundeswehr fo r
operation behind the front lines.
Furtherrnora th ey also have a high
degree of log istical uniformity with the
axles of the reconnaissanc e car (8 x 8)
" Luchs" and of the armoured transporter
(6x6).
Axles with outboard planetary fi nal
d;ives enable large gear reductions to
be accommodated in a small space.
Torque and engine speed is reduced

in two stages: in the spiral bevel gear

drive in th e axle centre, and in the
planetary final drives in the hubs. Full
torque becomes effective in the wheel
hubs. The axle centre drive is of small
dimension. This results in high ground
clearance, which is of particular
importance for military vehicles.

The large rad ial tyres have an optimal

tread for fast on- road operation and for
the ground conditions normally
encountered in central Europe. Snow
chains are envisaged for extreme
weather conditions, particularly fo r deep
snow. The differentials of all nonsteering axles are lockable.

The tra'1Sffiission unit consists of a hydraulic torque converter

with lock- up clutch, foot-operated clutch, 8-speed synchrorresh

between front and rear-axle drive. T'ne entire unit is in
rronobloc fonn and on t.'1e two and t.li..ree-axled vehicles is
bolted to the engine . On the four-axled trucks the transmission
block is separetely rrrn.mted and driven via a drive shaft .
A free-wheel lock enables tcM- starting of engine in spite of
drive-off torque converter.

in special sensitive applications, such as you see below.

truck as rocket launcher

The 7 t gl (6 x 6) chassis fully meets the
requirements for operation with light
art i llery rocket launchers, i.e. rapid
on-road transport, even over long
distances, rapid change of fi ring position.
even in the most difficult country.

SERVI CE SUPPORT PROGRAM
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

~.A.N. CORPORATION

M.A. N. SERVICE ORGA.."HZA.TION

1.

Introduction
In the Federal Republic of Germany, M.A.N., has a
service network of 139 M.A.N.-owned service centers
and 124 authorized repair shops.

The map shows the

distribution of these facilities.

The 139 M.A.N. service centers furnish M.A.N. with a
repair capacity of 1,320 t~~cks.

Trained specialists

work approximately 3.1 million manhours per year

repairing and maintaining vehicles.
About 4,250 workers are presently employed in the
service centers .

The number of workers per center

ranges from 10 to 265 workers depending on size.

A manager in charge of each service center is directly
responsible to M.A.N. 's central management.
2.

Service
The M. A.N.-owned service centers perform service on
100,000 commercial vehicles, i. e. trucks and buses

and 20,000 to 30,000 military trucks of the Bundeswehr.

Each center repair shop is equipped to carry out

maintenance and repair work.

IV/1

M. A.N. CCRPORAT:CN

~or reason of economy and efficiency, centralized

repair centers have been established according to
the Germa n ~1ili tary map for repair of ::1ili tary
vehicles and their assemblies.

Additional

repair shops may be established when r equired.

Intensive continous training is proveded by M. A.N.
to ensure high level of proficiency in ser~ice of
their ~ilitary veh ic les.
The service Centers operate on the basis of s tandard
guidelines specified by central management:
- Work is _performed i n accordance with standard
recommend ed times catalog.
Standard times fo r completion of repairs and
spare parts deliveri es is specified .
- Standard invoicing guidelines.
Hourly rates are determined separately for each
service center and are published to their customers
based upon commercial rates within that area.
Sununarv
M.A.N . has executed maintenance contracts with the
Belgian Canadian Army and is currently carrying cut
maintenance work for these forces.
This !'lew ccncept is cost effective to the Bundeswehr
and will a lso be beneficial to the U. S. Mil i tary,
West Germany .

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND
PPMO has decided to conduct a Tractor/EL demonstration in Germany using a M.A.N .
10 ton truck that has been shortened and converted into a tractor configuration
and an Ml27 trailer which will be modified and loaded to simulate the PII
erector 1aunche r.
A request has been made to the appropriate people in Germany to select areas
in which to conduct the demonstration tha t are representative Of the areas in
which .Pershing is presently deployed .
A P1a M757/EL will be put through the same demonstration for comparison purposes.

8.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this demonstration is to demonstrate the performance capabilities
of the M.A. N. tractor as a prime mover of a (simulated) PI! tactically loaded
erector launcher.

TEST OPERATIONS

A.

GENERAL
This demonstration will be conducted at preselected locations that closely
si mulate or duplicate the terrain and conditions encountered during tactical
exercises. The demonstration will utilize the M757/EL Pla tactical load and
the M.A.N. - Ml27 trailer simulating the PII erector launcher .tactical load.
If time permits, the tractors will be switched and the demonstration conducted again except that the M.A.N. - Pla EL will not be driven through the
mud. Data will be recorded on sheets as shown in Figures l and 2.

B.

DEMO"JSTRATION
l. The right angle intersection of two 24-foot wide roadways can be marked
off on a level paved area with tape or any suitable materi~1. The
tractor-trailer will attempt to negotiate this inter~ection in one pass.
lhe area of interest is the wheel track, curb to curb. Overhang is of
academic interest only. This will be documented with motion pictu res .
2. 1he paved road demo nstration will be used to determine the top speed
of both loads . The distance required to reach top speed i s not a factor.
Motion pictures will be taken.
3. The secondary road demonstration is to determine handling characteristics
over unpaved roads through hilly terrain at speeds up to and including
30 MPH. Motion pictures will be taken.
4. The gradability sl ope demonstration should be conducted on a s lope or hill
of 20% grade. The tractor-trailer will negotiate the slope fr~m a standing
start at the bottom of the slope. Ti me, di stance, and top s pee d will be
recorded. Motion pictures will be taken .
5. The mud demonstration should be conducted as follows:
Prepare 3 mud sites of 100" in length and 20' \<Jide. The mud
depth in t he first .site s hould be 4" to 6",deep, 8" to 12"
deep in the second site, and 14'' to 18" deep in the third s ite.
Eac~ configuration, M757-Pla EL, M.A.N.-Ml c7 PII load, and
M757-Ml27 PII load will be driven through the mud 3 time s. On
the third pass, stop in the middle of each mud site, then
attempt to 9rive out. This will continue with each configuration,
with the mud getting progres sively deeper until a no-go condition
is reached.
