Abstract

The study was conducted to determine whether there is a relationship

between shyness and risk to drug use. It utilized a quantitative method,
specifically descriptive-correlational design to explain the relationship
between the variables. Data were collected from 301 grade 7 students of
Abellana National School who were chosen through cluster sampling. A
standardized 14-item shyness scale and a 12-item attitude to drug use
questionnaire (both tools are in a form of a Likert scale) were used to study
the relationship between the two variables. Data analysis showed that the
respondents perceived self, specifically regarding to their shyness, changes as they
compare themselves to others. It also revealed that the factors that influence or

contribute to the respondents negative attitude to drug use are (1) the
danger of drug use and (2) the need for protection against it; while the
factors that influence or contribute to the respondents uncertain attitude
towards drug use are (1) the comparison of drugs to other dangerous things
and (2) the lack of knowledge about the consequences of using drugs. The
computed grand mean of each variable, which was obtained using Pearson r, show
that the respondents have moderate level of shyness and low level of risk to drug
use with a grand mean of 2.87 and 1.94, respectively . The computed

correlation coefficient shows no correlation between shyness and risk to drug

use among grade 7 students of Abellana National School.
