Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning

Treatment
Timothy is a ghost who is lonely, in this stop motion we realise that he is trying to find love,
set in a forest. At the start of the film we see a shot of the forest, and then the ghost fades in,
walks towards the camera and pauses. We then see a speech bubble appear, where a
diagram shows his feelings. Then we see a figure walk past the ghost and timothy
approaches her, we hear them speak but Timothys voice will be ghost moans and the
characters voices are muffled. We then see a close up of a tear rolling down the characters
face. Then she runs off, and we see a close up of the ghost who has question marks appear
around him. Then another thought bubble is shown. We see Timothy make a rose appear,
and then someone comes over to pick it up, Timothy then speaks to her and she runs away.
We see a shot of the character dropping the rose on the floor and her running away. Then I
will cut to a close up of the rose wilting. We see a tear run down his face and he fades away.
Then we cut to a different location where he is flying through the night sky. Then he fades
away and fades in a new forest location. He is crying, and a figure comes over to hand him a
rose, we then see them stand next to each other and a heart appears above then. Finally,
the title of the film appears.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?
I will meet the requirements by making sure that the length of my production is a minute
long, aimed at all genders and ages which will be shown through the characters I use and
the story line, fitting into the genres horror, comedy or drama. Containing two characters.
Additionally, I will make sure that I use eighteen frames per second in order for the video to
run smoothly. The deadline for this work is 6th January 2017, I will meet this by planning my
time effectively.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
When building the set, to cut card I may choose to use a Stanley knife or scissors which
could cause an injury. To prevent this from happening I will be careful when using them. Any
cables on the floor could be a trip hazard, so I will try to minimize this as much as possible.
Furthermore, the use of lighting may be a hazard as the lights could heat up and burn
someone if they get touched.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I may encounter legal issues over the sound that I use. To prevent this, I will make sure I use
royalty free background music. Plagiarism could become an issue if my stop motion is
similar to something that has already be done, therefore I will make sure to search the
internet to see if any high end companies have done a similar production to mine already. I
do not think that my production would get any age restriction due to the content.

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

The particular formats that I will use are plasticine animation and Claymation as there is no
restrictions to what I can create, it also means that I can use whatever colour clay I want,
meaning that it will match my black and white theme.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
I could explore the use of armatures, seeing if they will work well with the type of characters I
am using, making each character easier to move and stronger. Additionally, I will be working
with black and white plasticine, which I can mix together to make different tones of grey.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
It may be more difficult to make the clay figures look good, this can be prevented by using
armatures to make the characters more realistic and appealing. Additionally, it may be more
difficult to show smooth movement when moving the figures from frame to frame which can
also be prevented to the use of armatures. Using them means that It will make the figures
easier to move. Furthermore, smoother frames can be achieved by using a higher frame rate
and making object movements smaller. The materials I am using may dry out quickly, so I
will need to shoot my stop motion quickly and preserve my figures effectively.

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

This video is of a stop motion set
which is all in white, this gave me
inspiration to have my production
set and characters in black and
white. I think it is successful by the
camera work used.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5K2HUg11sQ&t=148s
This video is a Claymation of a
monster in a forest. This has given
me inspiration for my production as
I could use clay to make my
characters, and have it set in a
woodland scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6b-dLM5yfE
This video is of a set made of card
board cut outs, and all in black and
white. This was my main inspiration
for me production as this is what I
would like my set to look like. I
think the most successful part of
this is the lighting, as it casts
shadows.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.

What will they be made of?

All my characters will be made of plasticine. The ghost will have a white cloth over it.

Movement of characters

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How are you going to make your characters move?

I will build my stick men around wire armatures, this will enable me to move them easier. I
will keep them very basic in order for movement to be smoother. My ghost will be made of
clay, wire in order to make movement easier.

What is the purpose of an armature?

The purpose of an armature is to give a clay figure a skeleton, it makes them easier to move
and build.

Will you use them for your characters?

Yes, all my characters will consist of wires in a stick figure shape, with clay put around it.

If so, how will you make it?

I will make a human figure out of wire and then put plasticine around it.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
My animation will be uploaded to YouTube, so watched online.

https://youtu.be/zaLr9Uyp1Ig

I produced a focus group in order to find out if my target audience was appropriate, the
agreed with what I had stated above. They said that younger audiences may have found it
quite scary, so make it child friendly.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

I will be photographing my animation at college and at home

Does it have natural daylight?

No

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

I have not used natural lighting in order to make sure the lighting is consistent

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Yes

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will place LED strips, and place them in front and behind of the trees. I will turn the lights off
in the room so that the only light source is the lights on the set. Additionally, there will be
fairy lights put through the background, to represent starts, this will also help to light up the
set,

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
