ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,

Index

ABRA news.
Developments:
Aldi Supermarket in Aldinga:
I wish to make very clear that the decision to object and appeal the
approval of this development by the DAP, causing it to be taken to
the ERD court, which was undertaken jointly by Friends Of Port
Willunga and Friends Of Willunga Basin, was done without
ABRAs involvement.
We are loosely affiliated with both organisations in the Southern
Community Coalition.
I met with representatives of these two bodies in the early stages
when submissions were due before the DAP. Like them we had
misgivings about the traffic congestion this extra development
would have on the short stretch of Port Road and ABRAs
submission to the DAP indicated as much. During that discussion
however, viewing the proposed plans and specs, we were all
impressed by the efforts the developers had made to make the
development appropriate in size & style to fit into the historic
township zoning as much as possible.
I am mystified by the turn around from these two groups.
I only hope, now it is out of the hands of the DAP, we will not lose
the advantages we had gained in relation to historic zone size,
location and appearance and finish up with a more typical Aldi
barn.
Im sure we all look forward to the local employment, competition
and choice this extra supermarket will provide.

CAROL

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

SOUTHERN THEATRE AND ARTS SUPPORTERS
- STARS RELOCATES

SEEK and FIND!

Leaving behind some serious personal trauma in UK
Carol headed off in '95 with her brand new hero and
husband Dave, to seek a better life in Australia.
But she found it wasn't always so easy, despite really
liking the culture and climate in S.A. There was a series
of setbacks: their house was broken into, her son lost an
arm in an Elizabeth potato-factory accident, Dave
suffered a heart attack, daughter had her gall bladder
removed; and not least, Carol's own fifteen-year battle
with IBS and diverticulitis continued unabated.
Carol had faith, having given her heart to Christ a few
years prior when a pastor visited her mum and dad's
home; but the pain was so severe. Neither pain killers nor
prayer were working, and her weight was down to six and
a half stone. "You could see my bones!" She got
desperate: "God, you've got to do something!"
During a Sunday service at the APP church in Moana
Carol was prayed for by a young minister called Josh. She
collapsed onto the floor under the Holy Spirit's power,
felt warmth go through her whole body, got up and
sensed God was saying, "Eat normal food and put weight
on". She'd been on a very stringent diet (which didn't
work either) but from then everything normalised and
remains so to this day - now four years on.
Dave was healed (separate story), the son is very upbeat
and encouraging to others. Carol has a lot of peace in her
life and confidence that things will always turn out well
as she continues looking to the Lord for the answers.
Early 2017 they will be running a new drop in-come op
shop called, "Seek n Find" at 280 Beach Rd., Hackham.

The sun has decided to come out after many days and
nights of wild weather.
The long, long winter of 2016.
We decide to check out the eroded coast at Port Willunga
after the most recent storms.
Then head to our favourite fish and chip destination,
Jimmies @ Snapper Point Aldinga. (Beach Ed)
After perusing the menu I have time to read Coastal

Many thanks for the news and pictures.
Plus to Jimmies for my fast food fix.
We do have one of the best coastal views out there.

During WWII, U.S. airplanes were armed with belts of bullets
which they would shoot during dogfights and on strafing runs.
These belts were folded into the wing compartments that fed
their machine guns. These belts measure 27 feet and contained
hundreds of rounds of bullets. Often times, the pilots would
return from their missions having expended all of their bullets
on various targets.
They would say, I gave them the whole nine yards, meaning
they used up all of their ammunition.

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's
image was either sculpted or painted.
Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing
behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others
showed both legs and both arms.
Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people
were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted.
Arms and legs are 'limbs,' therefore painting them would cost
the buyer more.
Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a
leg.'
(Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint.)

You OLD people would know all about these

They were funny looking buildings, that were once a way
of life,
If you couldn't sprint the distance, then you really were in
strife.
They were nailed, they were wired, but were mostly
falling down,
There was one in every yard, in every house, in every
town.
They were given many names, some were even funny,
But to most of us, we knew them as the outhouse or the
dunny.
I've seen some of them all gussied up, with painted doors
and all,
But it really made no difference, they were just a port of
call.
Now my old man would take a bet, he'd lay an even
pound,
That you wouldn't make the dunny with them turkeys
hangin' round.
They had so many uses, these buildings out the back,"
You could even hide from mother, so you wouldn't get
the strap.
That's why we had good cricketers, never mind the
bumps,
We used the pathway for the wicket and the dunny door
for stumps.
Now my old man would sit for hours, the smell would rot
your socks,
He read the daily back to front in that good old
thunderbox.
And if by chance that nature called sometime through the
night,
You always sent the dog in first, for there was no flamin'
light.
And the dunny seemed to be the place where crawlies
liked to hide,
But never ever showed themselves until you sat inside.
There was no such thing as Sorbent, no tissues there at
all,
Just squares of well read newspaper, a hangin' on the
wall.
If you had some friendly neighbours, as neighbours
sometimes are,
You could sit and chat to them, if you left the door ajar.
When suddenly you got the urge, and down the track you
fled,
Then of course the magpies were there to peck you on
your head.
Then the time there was a wet, the rain it never stopped,
If you had an urgent call, you ran between the drops.
The dunny man came once a week, to these buildings out
the back,
And he would leave an extra can, if you left for him a zac.
For those of you who've no idea what I mean by a zac,
Then you're too young to have ever had, a dunny out the
back.

Aldinga Community Christmas Lunch Invitation

Since 2010, each year the Aldinga Community has come together to provide a wonderful
Christmas lunch for families who might be facing a range of pressures at this time of year, and
for those who might not have family here to celebrate with, and who therefore might
otherwise spend the day alone.
In past years our guests have enjoyed a traditional Christmas Dinner with all the fabulous
trimmings, followed by Pavlovas and Puddings. After the meal there is a special visit from the
man in red, bringing Christmas gifts for the children. Everyone comes away from the event with
a full tummy, warm heart, happy memories, gifts and other goodies

If you would like to volunteer some of your time, we would be so grateful for your support, and
if you have face painting skills, please do get in touch. For more information, or to make a
booking, please contact Anne on 8215-6310.

2016 Aldinga Bay Community

Christmas Carols
The 12th Aldinga Bay Community Carols is planned for
Sunday 11th December 2016 and we cant wait to see our
attendance grow again this year. Thank you to our
community for making this FREE event a continued
success! The event will once again be held at Symonds
Reserve (next to the Aldinga Community Centre),
Stewart Avenue, Aldinga Beach.
FREE Carnival activities will take place from 4.00 till
7.00pm. These activities include a jumping castle for the
kids, sumo wrestling, having a go at the slow rider bike
track or see a balloon twisted into a flower! You may like
to get your face painted, or try your hand at one of the
craft activities.
Let your taste buds be tempted with the variety of stalls
on offer. Home Grain Bakery will again be selling their
delicious treats along with other vendors selling lollies
and popcorn, ice-creams, delicious coffee, healthy wraps,
a curry or two and of course no carnival is complete
without a super sausage sizzle. You may also like to
purchase glowsticks for the carols which will begin at
7:30pm.
As the sun sets, set up your chairs or picnic rug and settle
in for an evening of entertainment. Remember your warm
clothes as the night can get chilly! Join with the
community choir as they lead us in some well-loved
carols. This year, the Aldinga Bay Community Carols are
pleased to welcome The Germain Sisters who have an
infectious indie pop tune style, a sound similar to The
Corrs, Haim and Echosmith. The special guests for the
children are Ticklish Allsorts who will bring some family
friendly music, dance and fun.
After a very successful food donation point in 2015, this
year we are thrilled to be partnering with Food For
Freedom who provide fresh home cooked meals using
local produce for families facing homelessness due to
domestic violence. So please check out the Carols
Facebook page to see what non-perishables can be given
to this cause on the day. Donations can be left at the
Aldinga Bay Baptist Church stall. Do something small
this Christmas and together we can make a big difference!
The organising committee would like to thank all the
sponsors who have supported this community event. In
particular, we wish to acknowledge our Gold Sponsors:
The City of Onkaparinga, Home Grain Bakery and
Jemma Turner - Magain Real Estate.
So, circle Sunday 11th December on your calendars and
join us for this FREE community event created with you
in mind.
For updates on the event (particularly in case of poor
weather) find us on Facebook,

Something To Think About

(If you have learned to speak fluent English, you must
be a genius.)
The bandage was wound around the wound.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full that it had to refuse the refuse.
I did not object to the object.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was
time to present the present.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
Upon seeing the tear in the garment I shed a tear
INSTALLING A CARPET
A CARPET LAYER had just finished installing carpet
for a lady. He stepped out for a smoke, only to realise
he'd lost his cigarettes.
In the middle of the room, under the carpet, was a bump.
"No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack of
smokes," he said to himself.
He proceeded to get out his hammer and flattened the
hump.
As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. "Here," she
said, handing him his pack of cigarettes. "I found them in
the hallway."
"Now," she said, "if only I could find my parakeet.

As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths
only twice a year (May and October). Women kept their
hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of
lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford
good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs,
so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put
the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat
would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big
wig'. Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big
Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and
wealthy.

In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room

with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded
down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head
of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone
else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who
was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair
during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were
important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the
chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the
expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'
Common entertainment included playing cards. However,
there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but
only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying
the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet,
since most games require 52 cards, these people were
thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't
'playing with a full deck.'
Early politicians required feedback from the public to
determine what the people considered important. Since
there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians
sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They
were told to 'go sip some Ale and listen to people's
conversations and political concerns. Many assistants
were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and
'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually
combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus
we have the term 'gossip.

Your Sense & Dollars.

Your Credit Score

J K L
by Nani Johnston
What is a credit score? you asked. According to
Wikipedia: a credit score is a numerical expression based
on a level analysis of a person's credit files, to represent
the creditworthiness of the person.
In short, a credit score represents your level of
creditworthiness to lenders. It may not mean anything to
you until the day you need a loan. Some people do not
even know it exists even though they may have been
assessed on this score before. Apart from internal lending
policy and assessment, most lenders will check credit
score to determine whether they will lend to you.

Your Credit score is static. It changes. If you see

anything on your file that looks questionable, get in touch
with the credit provider, and get it corrected if needs be.
You dont want to miss out on a loan because of an error
in your credit score. Otherwise, stay good and maintain
that great score!

The Get Together Club

A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a
disability and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was
a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community
Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also
supported by Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and
Disability SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of
each month, at the Aldinga Life Care Hall, Pridham
Blvd, Aldinga Beach from 6.30 8.30pm.
For bookings call 8433 9555
or email: thegettogetherclub2013@gmail.com.

Credit default and bankruptcy will impact your score, but

even if you have never had any default or been bankrupt,
you could still have an average or below average score.
This is because a credit score is not just about default.

WILLUNGA KICK BOXING CLUB

Meet at The Old Railway Station, Railway Terrace, Willunga
each Monday & Thursday nights at 7 pm. Contact Peter 0407
324 530 or just come and try.

Your credit score is determined based on various credit

activities which may include but is not limited to:
Your debt and repayment history
Number of loans or credits you have applied for or taken
out for any reasons, including guarantor loans,
focusing on the last 12 months
Number of credit cards or store cards you have
Number of accounts you have opened and closed
Number of credit inquiries that have been made on you
(by providers)

WILLUNGA JUDO CLUB

Meet at The Old Railway Station,
Railway Terrace, Willunga
each Wednesday night at 7 pm.
Contact Greg 8552 7074,
Kym 0407 798 803 or just come and try.

You may be credit scored regardless on whether you are

applying for a $500 retail store card or a $300,000 home
loan. The amount and purpose is irrelevant. It is
important you know what your credit score is, because
one day in your life, you may need a credit/loan. I will
talk about maintaining a good credit score another time.
In the meantime, if you do not know what your credit
score is, request it for free from sites such as My Credit
File www.mycreditfile.com.au,

Early aircraft's throttles had a ball on the end of it, in
order to go full throttle the pilot had to push the throttle
all the way forward into the wall of the instrument panel.
Hence "balls to the wall" for going very fast. And now
you know the rest of the story.
