How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronization to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

Attach a 400-word treatment of your idea

My idea is about telling a story through the use of Lego and relating the storyline to the lyrics
that are in the song I chose. I will be showing the contrast between one person who is happy
and another person who is very unhappy. I will do this by showing the contrasting behaviour
between the two people ad almost make the audience feel something towards what is going
on. Towards the end of my production, the two contrasting people will come together, which
will be shown through the upbeat music change and the change in lighting. I also intend to
show the contrast by what the characters are wearing and what they look like, to show a
change between societys in my animation. My main target audience is going to be aimed at
teenagers to young adults, where the music choice is a way I intend to develop this idea.
The unique selling point will be trying to manipulate Lego in a way that hasnt been done
before, by showing the Lego figurines at a more realistic form from using a higher frame rate.
I will use a built location to present my animation, where I will build a realistic Lego house
which will suit my theme of contrast between the two houses. I will mainly try to choose fairly
dimmed lighting at the start to show the upset of the person clearer at the start, but towards
the end I will use warmer lighting when the atmosphere is intended to be happier and
upbeat. The main focus for Lego has been children from the very begging, but is slowly
starting to open up to a bigger target audience for the public. Recently Lego has changed its
products to suit and be aimed at both girls and boys, which now means they have bigger
target audience to aim at. This will mean I will have to aim my production at all genders and
all ages.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?
I will meet the requirements of my brief by ensuring that I make an effective music
video, which has a relatable storyline to the music I have chosen. I will also ensure
that I dont make my actual music video any longer than 1 minute in length, as I said I
would make it under 1 minute. I will also ensure than I use the most amount of frame
rates per second to ensure the production runs as best as possible. This will allow
less jeered movements throughout the production, as it will cause the effect of the
stop motion to look like a filmed video that took place.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
There are a few health and safety issues that I may encounter throughout the
production when filming. Lighting and wires could be an easily hazardous event as
they can get hot and cause fires and they can be easy trip hazards, so people will
need to make sure they are extra careful. I will prevent these potential hazards from
occurring by ensuring everyone is safe at all times, by making sure everything is
secured to the floor and no loose wires are lying around. I will also make sure I dont
leave the lights on for long duration of time, and make sure I use a low energy saving
light that wont produce as much heat.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions

There are a few issues that could appear throughout the filming production, which
could affect my overall production. Sound is going to be an important aspect that
could affect my production, due to copyright claims taking effect throughout my
production. This can mean that I may need to ask permission to use the music I am
using, as I will need to ensure my video doesnt get blocked when Im uploading it to
YouTube. Also, plagiarism could be a potential restriction as someone may try and
debate they I have based my idea around there idea, which could lead to legal reasons
arising when I try and produce my production. This could lead to time being wasted
throughout the production process, as it could end up being delayed in the process.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
time lapse photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I will be using Lego to produce my stop motion, as I thought it would be the best way of
trying to produce my stop motion through the music I am using. I also think that using Lego
would be an effective way of creating a story through the use of location and the people I
use. I will be using stop frame.

What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?

There are many different possibilities that I could explore when I use this format in my stop
motion. I could try to use a much higher frame rate when I produce my stop motion, this
effect will make my overall production run a lot more smoothly, as it will seem like a real life
video that is happening. I could also explore the use of characters that are in my production,
and I could use characters that are much different to the other people that are in the
production. This will be effective in showing the contrast between the main characters, and
the two houses will be clearly visible. Another possibility I could explore in my production is
the use of location, where I could be more adventurous with the things I am using and make
it possibly different to the usual rectangular house that is usually used in stop motion.

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e. what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
There are a few limitations that could arise when I use this format in my animation. Firstly,
Lego can be hard to manipulate sometimes as you are using a small object that requires
very small movements to make it effective. This means that if I knock my figurines slightly I
will have to repeat the process again, as it will destroy the whole sequence of photos, which
could mean the production ends up taking a much longer time to achieve the right
production.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

I have chosen these examples, as they are the most popular forms of stop motion that have
used Lego. These videos have used a much higher frame rate, which has meant they flow a
lot more easily and look almost like a video. The quality of these video is also of a very high
standard and the storylines are particularly interesting, which can captivate the audience
more. Also, the use of sets has been thought about a lot as every last detail can be clearly
seen in the videos, which means they have successfully planned for what they are going to
do in a lot of depth. I will take many different ideas from these videos that I have found. I
have now decided to ensure I use plenty of props in my set, to make the place look as
realistic as possible, which will make the audience like it a lot more. I also believe that I
should include a higher frame rate, which will ensure that the stop motion looks as realistic
as I can possibly make it.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
My animation will have a main subject of loneliness, as it will show one character being left
out. This subject will be vitally important in try to put across a message to the audience. This
subject will be expressed through the use of the camera focusing on the main character and
showing his reactions throughout.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
The storyline in my animation is very important in maintain viewer interest throughout my
production.
Intro: It will start off with footage of the houses and surrounding areas, which will act as the
setting up of the shot
The main storyline is going to be showing the life of a character who feels isolated from the
world and feels like his life isnt that good anymore. The shots will often cut to what his
neighbor is doing and shows him having fun and enjoying life with his friends. As the lyrics
are Be Like You, the main character is pretty much writing this about how he feels at this
current stage.
Towards the end of the production the two groups will come together as one collective. This
will show them as happier people, which is shown towards then end of the music. The main
character will be especially changed from this, as it will now feel happier which will clearly
have been shown.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
All the characters in my animation will be made out of Lego. I will have up to 4 characters
where three of them will be more relatable and realistic and the other one will be more
unusual and different in comparison. I will make the characters majorly different to each
other, to make them each have a personality of their own and different characteristics that
they may have. I will do this by ensuring they are all wearing different clothes that can show
there characteristics more, and show the contrast between the main characters in the stop
motion. This technique could make the entire stop motion more interesting for the audience
to watch, as they will clearly understand the storyline more from the contrast.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

What will they be made of?

My characters will be made out of Lego and will have different styles to what theyre
designed for.

Everything in my production will be made from Lego

Movement of characters
How are you going to make your characters move?

I will be using small movement of the characters to show a rapid set of images in a video like
format. I will use my hand to slowly move certain parts of the Lego objects at a slow pace. I
will try to move the objects as slowly as possible to give the best impression of movement for
the audience. Also, because the Lego characters have joints, this will make it much easier to
hold their movements and only make slight movements when it is needed. The fact they
have hands that can easily hold objects makes it even more easier to grab certain objects,
as it can allow them to be more flexible in what they are doing, allowing the storyline to
progress more quickly.

What is the purpose of an armature?

Armature is an electrical motor than can used in animation to sculpt the character you after.
It can be good way of getting the bets shapes and the most detail into what you are doing. It
allows you to have more control over what is actually going on, and can allow your
production to look more realistic at the end of it

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

Will you use them for your characters?

I will not be using them for my characters, as my characters will already be formed as they
are made out of Lego. This means I wont and I cant use an armature to change the look of
them, as it wont be an effective use.

If so, how will you make it?

I wont be making it, as it will already be made and will be brought from a local toy store.
However, I will be making the sets myself, and I will be using bricks and small lego props to
create this effect.

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

My set will be a three wall set, with two main building occupying the scenes. These sets will
be different as one will have more in it and look better, whereas the other one will be very
plain and big, which shows the emptiness and loneliness of the characters.

Add in photographs of your sets/backgrounds.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?
I will be using Be Like You, CVBC

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

I wont be having many sound effects in my animation, as I will be using a song to create a
music video.
Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
Male and Female

Age
14 years and above, mainly aiming more towards children and
teenagers.

Interests
There main interests will include building and architecture. They will most likely like Minecraft
and Lego games that are similar to that sort of style. The main interests my target audience
will have is that they will like video and computer games and they will like to watch videos on
YouTube.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

They may already watch Shawn the Sheep, clay animations and other music videos that
have used stop motion as a technique. They may already watch stop motion that has been
produced from Lego, as it has been used in TV and film recently, where they have become
majorly successful.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

Many images of previous Lego animations that have been done already, as this will be
similar to the sort of thing I am doing, which will be more relatable.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

I think any inappropriate language and sexual content could be rather distasteful and
offensive to people of my target audience. I will also need to ensure I dont put any offensive
material in my animation

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will ensure my animation fits my specific chosen audience, as I will ensure that I make my
stop motion fun at the same time, as I dont want it to be too strict that the audience are
immediately bored from it. I will also ensure that the storyline is easy to understand for them
and they will be constantly focused during the duration of it, as they will hopefully find it
entertaining and interesting to watch.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)

They will watch my video on YouTube, as I will try and promote the song by using an
interesting storyline. Hopefully the video should be easy to find when searching for the song
name and will be promoted on social media to show the song more to the general public. My
idea is that the video will be available on more than one online video site like YouTube,
Vimeo and Vevo

Frame Rates
What is the duration of your animation in minutes? (minimum 30 seconds)
The duration of my animation will be just over 1 minute in legth

In seconds?
Around 63 seconds

How many frames per second for video?

Im aiming to do around 7-10 frames per second, but preferably more to get a better flow of
my animation

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

There are 60 seconds in a minute. How many frames (ie. Individual photos) will you
need to take?
Overall if I decide to use a frame rate of 7 photos a second, I will end up having a minimum
of 420 photos overall. Realistically though I will most likely need around 600 photos for
around 1 minute of footage to get the best consistency.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-Production Booklet

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

I will be photographing my animation in my bedroom, where I will have a set for the
animation. However, I may also try to photograph my animation in a controlled environment
like the college studio, where the lighting will constantly be the sa

Does it have natural daylight?

It will have both artificial and natural light, but it depends on the sort of time I take the
photographs, as the lighting will always change in the day.

If so, you will need to block this out. Explain why.

Yes, I will need to most likely block out the natural daylight in the room, a sit could change
the lighting in the production throughout the day. This is due to the constant change in
weather conditions, that can affect the lighting, as it can be dark and light throughout the day
which could affect the overall quality of the photographs and make them appear different
throughout

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

I will be using a desk lamp which will be focusing the beam of the light on the production,
which will be constant throughout, this effect will mean all the pictures are the same and they
dont change at all during this process.

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
I will have two lights that will be focusing on either sides of the production, this will hopefully
cause the light to flow throughout, creating a different effect in the production. I might use
filters on the light to create a warmer light for the audience, this will mean it will be more
welcoming for the audience.

Frame numbers
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps an animator organize the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speak, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
