NATURES GREAT FRIENDS
The place is cleanand beautiful. The breeze is very cool. Lolo Berto and
Ivan are busy fishing by the riverbank.
Lolo, please tell me some stories, Ivan asks his grandfather.
What do you want me to tell you about? asks Lolo Berto.
About the people in the past. They respected nature more than the
people of today, says Ivan.
Well, in the olden times, our ancestors already knew about ecology.
Ecology is the study of nature. All the things that they did depended on the
environment, Lolo Berto recounts.
Is that so, Lolo? asks Ivan.
Yes. Their legends fables, proverbs and riddles were all about the
nature.They learn about the nature and environment through these, says
Lolo Berto.

 So, those were the people in the past, wonders Ivan.

Not only that. Listen very well, my grandson, says Lolo Berto.
Stories from the past show great respect for nature. Our ancestors would
worshipped the mountains, the seas, the rivers, and the skies, fairies, and the
engkanto.
How Lolo? asks Ivan.
When they touched a tree, fished from the rivers and seas, and passed
by thick forests, they asked permission from fairies and engkanto before
doing these, Lolo Berto says.
Lolo, is that how our ancestors respected nature then? I wish people
today could show the respect. Then, there wont be great floods. The soil
from the mountains wont erode. Our weather will not be as unpredictable as
it is, says Ivan.
Suddenly, Ivan feels something pulling his string. Lolo, Lolo! Ivan
shouts excitedly. I think I have caught a fish!
Pull up your rod slowly. It wont get away, says Lolo Berto.
Ivan put his catch in a container.
After catching enough fish, Lolo Berto said, Lets go, its about lunch
time, and your mother is surely waiting for us. You hold the fishing rods. Ill
carry our catch.
Grandfather and grandson walk excitedly back home.
