1. Style- the way a writer writes


and it is the technique which
an individual author uses in his
writing. It varies from author
to author and depends upon
ones syntax, word choice, and
tone. It can also be described
as a voice that readers listen
to when they read the work of
a writer.
2. Complication- refers to the
difficult circumstances that
come about through the
character's attempts to find
solutions to his/her problem.
3. Resolution-the part of the
story's plot line in which the
problem of the story is
resolved or worked out. This
occurs after the falling action
and is typically where the
story ends.
4. Atmosphere- refers to the
feeling, emotion, or mood a
writer conveys to a reader
through the description of
setting and objects.
5. Protagonist- the central
character or leading figure in
poetry, narrative, novel or any
other story. A protagonist is
sometimes called a hero by
the audience or readers.
6. Suspense- the intense feeling
that an audience goes through
while waiting for the outcome
of certain events. It basically
leaves the reader holding their
breath and wanting more
information.
7. Flashback- interruptions that
writers do to insert past
events in order to provide
background or context to the
current events of a narrative.

8. Theme- is defined as a main


idea or an underlying meaning
of a literary work that may be
stated directly or indirectly.
9. Hero- defined as the principal
character of a literary work.
This term also is employed in
another sense for the
celebrated figures in certain
ancient legends and heroic
epics like Gilgamesh, the Iliad,
Beowulf, or La Chanson de
Roland.

Point of View- It is the
narrative voice through which
readers follow the story's plot,
meet its characters, discover
its setting, and enter into its
relationships, emotions, and
conflicts. Point of view allows
readers to experience the
story as it unfolds.

Moral- means a
message conveyed or a lesson
learned from a story, a poem,
or an event.

Denouement- a literary
device which can be defined
as the resolution of the issue
of a complicated plot in fiction.
Majority of the examples of
denouement show the
resolution in the final part or
chapter that is often an
epilogue.

Inner Conflict- a
problem faced by a character
inside his or her own mind.

External conflict-is a
struggle that takes place
between the main character
and some outside forces.

Heroine-a woman of
distinguished courage or
ability, admired for her brave
deeds and noble qualities. The

principal female character in a


story, play, film, etc.

Epigram-is a rhetorical
device that is a memorable,
brief, interesting and
surprising satirical statement.
Is simply a brief and witty
statement.

Realism- a literary
technique to describe story
elements, such as setting,
characters, themes, etc.,
without using elaborate
imagery, or figurative
language, such as similes and
metaphors.

Antagonist- a
character or a group of
characters which stand in
opposition to the protagonist
or the main character.
Opponent, competitor or rival.

Symbol- is literary
device that contains several
layers of meaning, often
concealed at first sight, and is
representative of several other
aspects, concepts or traits
than those that are visible in
the literal translation alone.
Symbol is using an object or
action that means something
more than its literal meaning.

Climax- is the highest
point of tension or drama in a
narratives plot. Often, climax
is also when the main problem
of the story is faced and
solved by the main character
or protagonist.

Ode-a poem of noble
feeling expressed with dignity,
with no definite number of
syllables or definite number of
lines in stanza.

Elegy- is a poem which
mourns the death of someone,
often a close friend or family
member, or sometimes a
public figure who has recently
died.

makes the use of highly
exaggerated and funny
situations aimed at

poem, often written about a
hero or heroines. An example
of a literary epic is Beowulf.

16th and 17th centuries by
actors wearing masks.

Metrical Romance- is
a kind of poetry dealing with
the emotions or phase of life
and the story is told in a
simple. , straightforward and
realistic manner. It has a
happy ending whether love is
involved or not.

Ballad- a type of poetry
or verse which was basically
used in dance songs in the
ancient France. Shortest and
simplest

or little song or lyric. In poetry,
a sonnet has 14 fourteen lines
and is written in iambic
pentameter

genre and a type of dramatic
work that is amusing and
satirical in its tone, mostly

describes imaginary events
and people. created from the

real things, real people, real
events, real places and real
writing.

Novel- a long narrative
divided into chapters, spans a
long period of time

novel, usually light and often
sentimental in tone.

Tragedy-is kind of
drama that presents a serious
subject matter about human
suffering and corresponding
terrible events in a dignified
manner.

Metrical Tale- a
narrative which is written in
verse and can be classified
either as metrical romance or
ballad.
37. Melodrama- usually used in
musical plays with the opera.
It arouses immediate and
intense emotion and is usually
sad but there is a happy
ending for the principal
character.
