Warehouse/Inventory Management System
(WMS)

What is RFID ?
Radio-frequency identification
(RFID) is a technology that
uses communication via
electromagnetic waves to
exchange data between a
terminal and an object such as
a product, animal, or person for
the purpose of identification
and tracking.

These RFID tags consists of

an integrated circuit to
store/processing information,
modulate radio-frequency
(RF) signal, carry other
specialized functions; and an
antenna for
receiving/transmitting the
signal

Radio-frequency identification
(RFID) tags are labels applied
to or used into a product,
animal, etc. for the purpose of
identification and tracking
using radio waves. Some tags
can be read from several
meters away; beyond the line
of sight of the reader.

Benefits of RFID

RFID tags have a longer read range.

RFID tags have read/write memory capability.
More data can be stored in an RFID tag
RFID tagged items can be read even if they are
behind other items.
RFID tags can be placed inside the packaging itself.

What is WMS?
Warehousing functions typically begin with receipts from suppliers and end
with shipments to customers, and include all inventory movements and
information flows in between.

WMS solutions are generally designed to merge computer hardware, software,

and peripheral equipment with improved operating practices for managing
inventory, space, labour, and capital equipment in warehouses and distribution
centres.
WMS allows a company to increase its competitive advantage by reducing
labour costs, improving customer service, increasing inventory accuracy, and
improving flexibility and responsiveness.

WMS enables a company to manage inventory in real time, with information as

current as the most recent order, shipment, or receipt and any movement in
between.

Typical WMS Operations

Goods Receiving
Location
Management
Put-Away
Picking
Order Dispatch

Goods Receiving
WMS provides a real-time solution for the receipt of products into the
warehouse using delivery notes, EDI or standard Receiving Orders. The
receiving process automates and validates the receipt of goods against an EDI
or purchase order.
WMS application software allows the user to enter details of new Receiving
Orders including:
Order Number
Order Date
Vendor Details
Product Lines and Quantities Ordered
Receiving Options: There are several options which will determine how
the system handles receiving orders and transactions on the RFID Portable
Terminal. The options are as follows:
1. Auto Close Receiving Orders.

2. Prompt for Location.

3. Allow over Receiving.

4. Cross-Dock Check during Put away process.

5. Default Receiving Location.

6. Create Pallet ID on Receipt.

Increases productivity

Makes routing faster

Eliminates time-consuming
and costly steps

Enables faster invoice

settlement

Minimizes human error

Increases inventory accuracy

Reduces inventory levels

Location Management
Locations can be in racking, bins or general
storage,

receiving

or marshalling areas in the

warehouse or factory.

Locations are given a reference which is used to

track and manage the location of inventory items and
pallets.
Locations can be given a cube size which the
system can use to efficiently manage the available
space in the warehouse.
Quarantine Locations.

Hence Location Management is an important and

strong feature of our WMS.

Location Management
Different logics used for determining actual locations and sequences:
Location Sequence

Fewest Locations

Zone Logic

Pick-to-clear

Fixed Location

Reserved Locations

Random Location

Nearest Location

First-in-first-out (FIFO)

Maximize Cube

Last-in-first-out (LIFO)

Consolidate

Quantity or Unit-of-measure

Lot Sequence

Hence Location Management is an important and

strong feature of Our WMS.

Put - Away
Put Away is the action of putting product away into
stock locations, e.g. racking, slots, bins, floor areas etc.

The put away function in any WMS is configurable and generally rulesdriven. For example:
Open Put Away: Allows user to put any SKU in any location
Prime Locations: Directs user to specific locations defined
by SKU
Zoning: Directs the user to locate SKU in a specific zone
Space Managed: The system evaluates the available space in the
warehouse and directs the user to the preferred location

Using wireless RFID Handheld terminals means that all

put away activity is recorded in real-time and verified, as
the operator will scan the location tag on the rack or bin etc.

Picking & Dispatch

In WMS automated picking of goods to fulfil orders
makes warehouse operations more efficient and reduces
the number of mistakes made. As items are picked, they

are verified as to quantity, location and the validity of

item number making picking errors a thing of the past.
After the orders have been picked they are ready for
shipping.
WMS supports many pick/ship process combinations:
Pick and Immediate Shipping
Ship after Staging to Dispatch

Create Dispatch Loads

WMS can automate the printing of shipping and pallet labels and
Advise/Dispatch Notes and Manifests. WMS can be fully integrated with RFID
systems to provide shipment details for customers.
