A Note From Your Board

(Larry E. Reider, President, Greens Home Owners Association )

Dear Greens Homeowner,

It is hard to believe, but February 2017 is upon us.
Thanks to our recent rains, when Spring comes here, as it starts to do every year in February, we
will have lush, green vistas to admire. I have always looked forward to February, since it does-for
those of us lucky enough to live here-mean that warmer weather and more outdoor activity is on
the way. For a baseball fan like me, it also means that Baseball Spring Training starts, and baseball
season is just around the corner.
February also contains two major holidays .This is when we get to celebrate, and honor, George
Washington and Abraham Lincoln as well as celebrate Valentines Day.
Valentines Day started as a Christian Liturgical Feast to honor early saints named Valentinus.
The early celebrations did not have any romantic connotations until Chaucer wrote a poem about
Valentines in the 14th Century. Statistics from The Retail Advertising and Marketing Association
state that in 2016 over $13,000,000,000 was spent which equals $116.21/person. All I can say
about that, is someone is spending my share!!
Valentines Day here at the Greens will be special this year, thanks to the hard work of our Social
Committee. On Saturday, February 11, at the White Oak Clubhouse the Greens Valentines Dinner
will be held with champagne at 5:30 PM and dinner at 6:30 PM. For $25.00 per person you will
have your choice of Filet Mignon or Chicken with all the trimmings. The reservation deadline is
February 6. Please RSVP to Ann Young at 331-7800. This promises to be a great evening with
friends and neighbors.
There has been, and will continue to be, a lot going on in the months ahead in The Greens. We are
moving forward with our tree maintenance/trimming plan. As you know, we have over 600 trees
which add greatly to the beauty and ambience in our community. The tree locations have been
mapped and a three year plan, to include trimming and possible removal of any dangerous and/or
destructive trees, is being developed.
We are also getting bids to replace street and landscape lights with LED bulbs. Lighting will be
more concentrated and bright, and it is estimated that our energy costs for lighting will be reduced
between 40-50 %.
The Ridge Oak re-model is moving along. While a project of this type never moves as fast as one
would like, we are now at a stage where we will get firm costs from local contractors for scope of
the planned re-model. Sometime after this, a planned re-model will placed on a story board so a
visual of the planned re-model will be available. Then, an ad hoc committee of residents will be
formed to review and advise on the project. Please know that while the re-model may not meet, or
exceed, everyones expectations, it will be done in a very fiscally responsible manner.
Finally, I would like to once again thank the many committees that work so hard to keep our
community the gem that it is.

Club Events
The Mens Club, again this year, sponsored the Marine Corps Reserve Toys
For Tots Christmas program. Thanks to the work of Al DeRisio and Steve
Filson, , it was a success again this year.

Club News
Rex Morton was elected chairman of the Mens Club for the coming year.
Rex has formed a committee to investigate ways in which the club can be
changed to make it more accommodating to club members.
This may include (but not limited to) a new time, day and format for the
meetings.
More information on the changes will be forwarded to the Club members via
the Newsletter and/or email.

SOGGY BUSINESS
The next SOGGY meeting will be in March. There will be our quarterly golf
outing, lunch in the White Oak Clubhouse followed by the meeting.
The SOGGYs will be notified of its date and time by email.
SOGGYs not playing golf are asked to attend the lunch/meeting.

Debating shot selection while over the ball invites poor performance.

The SOGGY is the Greens mens Golf Association.

WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITY

By Bonnie Castro, Welcome Committee Chairman
We are delighted to welcome Russ and Linda Ledbetter to The Greens. They relocated to Crocus
Drive from The Vineyards here in Bakersfield. Linda is originally from Madison, Wisconsin and Russ
comes from Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have been in Bakersfield for about twenty years. Russ retired from
Occidental Petroleum Company, today known as California Resources Corporation. Linda retired as a
Transcriptionist in the medical profession. They have two daughters, one in Bakersfield and the other
in West Virginia. Their close friend, Shasta, a Black Labrador, can be found with them in their frequent
walks in the community.
We are equally delighted to welcome Don and Jackie Billiard to The Greens. They relocated to Dutch
Iris Drive after spending many years here in Bakersfield. Jackie was born in China Lake, CA and Don
was born in Downey, Ca. Don is the owner of The Little Red School House, a private school here in
Bakersfield. Jackie previously was a pre-school teacher, where she met Don. Later, Jackie became a
bookkeeper for a law firm in Bakersfield. They have a son, here in Bakersfield and a daughter in Costa
Mesa, CA. They treasure a rescue black cat, Stumpy, so known because of part of the tail is missing.
Please introduce yourselves to our new residents, welcome them to our community and get to know
them.
