What can be done for Pakistan as a

Student?
It is assumed that only those who are already well settled in life and have nothing else to do can
contribute to the society. This is as absurd as it sounds. It is the little drops of water that make the
mighty ocean. We can all make a difference to the society if we have the will to do so. We need
not donate millions of Rupees to feed the hungry, or do some heroic act in order to make a
difference. Little act of kindness, small changes in lifestyles and being a responsible part of the
society will do the trick.
I believe we can all make a difference and students the most. We can improve our self, contribute
to the betterment of the environment, Donate, or even conserve the resources such as electricity
or water. As students I believe we can work together for a better future. I believe that as a student
of engineering I can work for the Robotic betterment of Pakistan.
As a student we can put our creative minds and create extraordinary thing! For example, if you
have younger siblings then you will definitely have seen Doreamon, the cartoon series, on your
TV at home. Apart from its popularity, have you ever wondered if one day Doreamon or
something like that ought to be created? Would we see robots in our daily life? If we create them,
will they be able enough to walk with us? Well, people working on robots claim that at the end of
this century, developed countries will replace their human army with robots. Are these things
even possible or are just ideas that can only be used by story tellers to create amazing stories?
We are somewhat advanced in this field. A few days back, I was watching a video where students
made robotic pet. It could detect a ball, and fetch it upon your command. In industries we see
robotic machines with an arm able enough to extend itself for holding and moving objects. They
detect the objects and perform operations as commanded. Robots can prove to be fruitful in our
everyday life works, reducing the need for manual labor and erasing the chances of errors.
Therefore, many people are researching about them in a way where they can facilitate the
mankind. We, the young generation, can work for this cause and support our country.

But the main query here is not to make a robot that is capable of performing a single operation.
Rather we are interested in some intelligent robots. As beginners we can start by making a
remote controlled car, and move ahead to explore avenues of voice commands or thermal
tracking? We could connect it via Bluetooth or internet, and command it from a fair distance. It
would do wonders for many fields such as Military, Medical, etc.
We can turn our ideas into reality. For this purpose we need servo or may be stepper motors that
will provide us slow motion of the motors arm as well as its accuracy of which the latter is more
important. We can make any movement part of this idea by using these motors and a bit of
programming. Until now, our desired robot can now walk without our commands. Now lets
build a robot that can hear you. We can have a look at different technologies being made until
now for voice recognition. In our cell phones we can see different applications that hear the voice
and differentiate them depending upon its frequency/amplitude. That is the point where it will
differentiate between different words and will store them in some storage. A mirifical robot is not
going to run without any storage, will it? And here we gathered data from any sound signal to the
robot. Just hearing the voice was not that much special but processing the sound signal into
something where the robot can perform some operation will make it marvelous.
I dont believe that we have a device which will respond to your Hello! How are you after
processing into some answer like I am fine! You can find walking and talking machines, but if
you try finding talking robots, you find yourself in much trouble. The reason is very obvious that
the robot will only answer the questions stored in it already.
As students, we can dive into some solution. Let me start with the very basic question as most of
people will ask it if we claim it as a robot that can talk. Lets suppose you asked What is your
name? Our robot is by now able enough to differentiate every word in the question. For the
talking functionality, we have to build a sophisticated algorithm that will produce the answer.
First word of the question is What that will help the robot to identify that a question is being
asked. Similar words like How, when etc. will result in the same category. The robot will now
move towards the next word i.e. is which will depict that asked thing is singular. Word your
will command it to search through its storage where its developer has placed the list of its own
parts. And the last word name will finally bring robots name placed in the list. We are not
panic about how it is going to speak the word as we have seen many text to speech converters.

In the same way, robot will move according to our spoken commands if somehow we can make
algorithm to detect the imperative language. We could assemble ourselves in a position where
robot will respond to a person who is going to speaks in an informal manner. Our robot is going
to respond well and I cant assume what will be the response. But for now, talking functionality
will be the most difficult part in creating such things. Other factors are simple enough to be
developed as they only require strong codes, but this part I believe will be enough tough time.
As the robots definitely have some micro-processor inside so they can also increase your
development area. You can create other functions like an inside 5V DC power supply. In addition
to being a robot friend, now with DC source it will act as charger for your cell phone. By the use
of micro-controllers, we can control almost every electrical appliance by use of transistor
switches. So basically now your robot will act as a remote for everything. You can always go on
a morning walk with him in case you dont find any friend in early morning. Intrigued? Then go
on and develop one for you.
Despite of our overwhelming researches, we have not created anything yet that can alter the time
as the Einsteins theory describes. So we haven't found ourselves creating something like
Doreamon as it is highly imaginary and contains gadgets mostly based on altering time. We
cannot handover the military control to the robots built so far. But from here, we can definitely
go on creating something much better than the previously developed robots. The same robots
will become the base for further researches until we will reach our goals. If you are interested in
making them, you should not jump at all things at once. Start with the most basic and simple
robot. Next, you could expand it into further things in future.
Whatever the response to these researches about robots might be valid, but one thing is sure that
because of innovation and simplicity, this field is advancing in such speed that robots will be
seen moving along the streets by the end of this century!
Dont turn a deaf ear towards the students because they are surely the future. I can say without a
doubt that Pakistan will soon be out there competing alongside foreign countries in this race, all
because of her students.
