Mughal Art Mughal Oil Paintings

Mughal art is a particular style that developed

during the Mughal empire between the sixteenth
and eighteenth centuries. This empire largely
stretched across a region that is now a part of India,
Pakistan and Bangladesh. This style of art has been
generally confined to miniatures either as book
illustration or as works that were kept in the albums
and emerged from the Ilkhatnae Persian art. This
style infact started and caught roots under the Delhi
Sultanate during the early 16th century - a period of
artistic inventiveness during which a previously
formal and abstract style had begun to make way
for a more vigorous and human mode of expression.

After the Mughal victory over the Delhi Sultanate in

1526, the tradition of miniature painting in India
further abandoned the high abstraction of the
Persian style and began to adopt a more realistic
style of portraiture and of drawing plants and
animals. This school of art that evolved under the
Mughals was also influenced by Hindu, Buddhist and
Jain cultures and the Mughal art that we refer to
today is an art that is amalgamation form all these
influences. The Persian tradition of richly decorated
borders framing the central image was continued
into the Mughal times.

Mughal art, each named for the emperor under

The Mughal art reached its pinnacle during the days
of Shah Jahan. During his rule the splendours like

around love and romance, the portraits and court
scenes became the much painted subjects. The
court scenes were presented with full grandeur of
