Titration with Silver Nitrate

Titration with silver nitrate carry out in acidified solution. Acid prevents precipitation of interfered
compounds and repress hydrolysis of used weak electrolytes. Titrant and indicators are prepared in
0,5 N solution of HNO3. Silver nitrate solution are standardised against sodium chloride.

1. Preparation the primary standard solution (0,05 N sodium chloride)

1. Calculate a primary standard sample (mSCT) for preparation 250 ml of solution:
N V meq SC
mSCT =
. M.m. NaCl = 58,5 g; mass of sodium chloride equivalent meqSC = M.
1000
2. Weight sodium chloride sample on hand balance with 0,1 g accuracy and put powder into
weighting bottle. Weight weighting bottle with sodium chloride on analytical balance.
3. Transfer the sodium chloride into volumetric flask and weight empty weighting bottle on
analytical balance. Calculate the sodium chloride sample weight mSCP.
4. Add 40-50 ml of distilled water to volumetric flask, dissolve sodium chloride and establish
exact volume of solution with water.
5. Calculate precision normal concentration of prepared solution of sodium chloride:
m 1000
NSC = SCP
.
V meq SC

2. Standardisation the solution of silver nitrate (Mohr method)

1. Load a burette with silver nitrate solution.
2. To conical flask pour in 10 ml aliquot of standard sodium chloride solution (VSC).
3. Introduce 2-3 drops of potassium chromate solution, and titrate with silver nitrate solution until
the precipitate just begin to change colour from white to red. Read the burette mark.
4. Repeat titration also two times. Calculate the approximate value of used silver nitrate solution
(VSN).
5. Calculate the exact concentration of the silver nitrate solution accordance to equivalents law
(NSCVSC = NSNVSN): NSN = NSCVSC/VSN.

3. Potassium iodide determination with Volhard method

Load a burette with 0,01 N potassium thiocyanate solution.
To conical flask pour in 10 ml aliquot of sample (VS).
Add 10 ml of 0,01 N silver nitrate solution (VAgNO3).
Introduce 1 ml of ammonium-iron sulphate solution, and titrate with 0,01 N potassium
thiocyanate solution until the solution appearances the red colour. Read the burette mark (VKSCN).
5. Repeat titration also two times. Calculate the median volumes of used potassium thiocyanate
solution.
6. Calculate potassium iodide percentage in sample:

1.
2.
3.
4.

M.m. KI = 166,008; meqKI = M.
