What are New Nurses Perceptions of Nursing Practice?

Nursing is a complex, ever-changing profession stated by Americas
Nursing Association (ANA). That is why many of the newly graduate nurses find it
hard to manage things when theyre in the hospitals already because it seems
like theyre soldiers sent to an open battlefield where there is no turning back
and doing the nursing practice taught is the only weapon. They find it hard
because of the challenges due to lack of experience and that they have to figure
out how to deal with situations for which in their classes did not prepare them
just like what Dwight Barret, RN., said:
This is perhaps my biggest struggle that I have as a new graduate Its
one thing when you have two or three patients or even four with your pre-grad
instructor but when you are by yourself and have the responsibility of managing
four patients in an environment where turnover can be potentially be fast
(especially in the ER) it can be quite challenging because throughout my
clinical experiences the time management skills I had and were taught
throughout school were based on if I was on a floor or a unit.
The nursing practice describes what everyone, patient or not, can expect
from nurses. The nursing practice before and today is really different according
to an article edited by Joe V, Yesterday, they learned nursing in the field, with
real patients and real life situations. When physicians felt they had sufficient
training, these were put into practice. They were very fortunate to have hands
on, real world training. Nowadays, on the other hand, the amount of time in the
clinical setting with actual hands on training is small in comparison to the
amount of time spent in the classroom.
According to Melanie, a new graduate nurse, who volunteered as a nurse
first before landing a paid job at a childrens hospital, says, I think nursing
school sets a foundation, but the real learning is on the job. But still nursing
practice is not only limited from studying in nursing schools to practicing in
hospitals, it can be learned and apply anywhere, to anyone: sick or healthy. That
is why from time to time, nursing practice continues to develop and improve not
only for the better-ness of the patients but for the further learning of the future
nurses. Thus, nursing practice before and today may have a very different ways
in teaching or training the nurses, it cant change the fact that still achieving the
goal which are to give care, to help improve and to assist human beings to have
a good and that highest possible quality of life is the same.
