A Call to Serve

"If you

attend Saturday 5:00 P.M. Mass, Sunday Noon Mass,

or 5:00 P.M. Sunday Mass - we need your help and your
talents. Since you attend that Mass, we would love to train you
to be a Eucharistic Minister to serve your Church, friends, and
family. You do need to be a member of the Parish. If you have
a special situation you need to address, Father Gem would be
more than happy to speak with you. Speaking for myself, I am
not a saint but I truly enjoy being part of the Mass and an
E.M.
Sadly, if we do not get some help soon, we may be forced to
have only one E.M. at each Mass (instead of 3). Thank you in
advance and you and yours have a great Thanksgiving.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

THE CHOSEN REMNANT

Until very recent decades Holy Thursday and Good Friday

were centered on personal pious devotions, not public liturgy. In
urban America, at least in cities with a significant Catholic
population, Holy Thursday was about veneration of the Blessed
Sacrament. People were encouraged to walk to seven churches
for a visit to each parishs repository, a kind of temporary
tabernacle on a side altar, closer in proximity to the faithful than
the usual tabernacle on the distant high altar. On Good Friday,
the most popular form of devotion was the Stations of the Cross,
or a three-hour program of word and preaching beginning at
noon.
The Holy Thursday seven-church hike was a way of
participating in a custom of the city of Rome. Traditionally, each
day in Lent was assigned to a particular parish church or basilica
in the city. Each week of Lent thus had seven churches, and
pious people tried to get to each one of them. The pilgrimage
was a symbol of unity and also the journey of faith. Originally,
the pope would go to each place for a liturgy, but political strife
removed the pope from Rome in 1305. With the papacy
relocated in France, the custom ceased until Pope Leo XIII
expressed interest in restoring it in 1900, and Blessed John
XXIII fully restored the custom in 1959. By the time Pope Leo
began to revive the custom, many American cities had enough
parishes and monasteries that the faithful could vicariously
participate in the revived tradition of stational liturgies by a very
long walk!.

Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old

Testament prophets. He speaks in todays first reading
of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a
remnant in Israel. This image of a remnant, or
remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and
Christianity.
Pauls letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep
concern for the Christians there. They are too selfconfident, he says, too sure of themselves. He
admonishes them to remember that Christ has given
them all they have.
Todays Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus
Great Sermon. As God gave Moses the law on Sinai,
so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach
them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts
the humiliation of the present with the glory of the
future: poverty vs. the riches of Gods kingdom,
hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit,
persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking
to Gods chosen remnant.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM

BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD

Postures at Communion: A Historical Perspective

Dear Father Gem: I attended the weekday morning Masses

this past week where you were the main celebrant. I like your
approach of explaining the Liturgical changes we adopted here
in our parish under your administration. Its really very
enlightening, to say the least. I understand that given the time
constraint at Mass, you couldnt explain in detail the changes
from the perspective of historical development. My question is:
Could you possibly give us a brief history of the postures and
practice of the faithful during the Rite of Holy Communion?
Roger, Parishioner
Dear Roger: Thanks for attending our weekday Masses. Thank you
also for bringing up this question. I am not a historian but I will try my
best to address your query. The posture for receiving Communion
has varied over time and still varies among the several rites of the
Church. It also depends on the frequency of Communion, the
distribution of one or both species, and the manner of distribution of
both species.

leeway to the bishops conference to

emit other norms but not to disallow
kneeling.
Thus, the General Instruction of
the Roman Missal, No. 160, has a slightly different text in the United
States and in other English-speaking countries.
In England and Wales it says:
The priest then takes the paten or ciborium and goes to the
communicants, who, as a rule, approach in a procession. The
faithful are not permitted to take the consecrated Bread or the
sacred chalice by themselves and, still less, to hand them from one
to another. The faithful communicate either kneeling or standing, as
determined by the Conference of Bishops. When they communicate
standing, however, it is recommended that they make an
appropriate sign of reverence, as determined in the same norms,
before receiving the Sacrament.
In the United States:

Regarding the place for the faithfuls reception of

Communion, the early Latin tradition favored approaching the altar
and, indeed, much later solutions maintained some relationship with
the altar even though it was physically in a different place. In some
areas, where there were many communicants the clergy would
come to the places of the faithful.
When the sanctuary was separated from the main body of
the church by gates, these were left open at the time of Communion
so that the faithful could enter and receive at a side altar. This
practice was curtailed from the early ninth century on. After this, the
sanctuary began to be surrounded by a high wall and the faithful
would approach a transept altar erected outside the screen. In some
places such as North Africa people would approach a rail. This rail
was higher than later altar rails and would reach chest level.
Therefore, until this time the custom was to receive standing. This is
still the practice of most Eastern Churches for whom knelling is not a
common liturgical posture.
From the ninth century on, the practice of receiving only the
host and directly on the tongue became the norm. Likewise,
between the 11th and 16th centuries, the custom of receiving the
Lords Body while kneeling gradually gained ascendancy in the Latin
rite.
Around the 13th century it became customary in some
places to spread a cloth, held by two ministers, for kneeling
communicants. Later on, in the 16th century it was common to place
the cloth on a table or bench located between the nave and the
sanctuary. Since this proved quite convenient for administering
Communion they gradually evolved into the fixed wooden, metal or
stone altar rails which were practically universal from the 17th
century until recently.
Although the Second Vatican Council did not call for the
removal of altar rails, in fact, they have been removed in many
places. The practice of receiving Communion standing rather than
kneeling and on the hand rather than on the tongue is also far more
common. The more frequent distribution of Communion under both
species, taking the Precious Blood directly from the chalice, has also
influenced this change of posture.
The liturgical norms still allow for kneeling, although allowing

The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of

the United States is standing. Communicants should not be denied
Holy Communion because they kneel. Rather, such instances
should be addressed pastorally, by providing the faithful with proper
catechesis on the reasons for this norm.
When we receive either on the tongue or in the hand, always
remember to answer, "Amen" after the priest says, "The Body of
Christ. Amen is not an English word; it's an Aramaic word. It really
is pronounced "Ahmeen," and it means, "So be it" "I agree." "I
believe." "It is the Body of Christ." That's what the "Amen" means:
"I honestly believe that when I receive, it is Christ, and so I say
Amen."
When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows
his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence to
our Lord. The consecrated host may be received either on the
tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant. No
one can dictate how one is to receive Holy Communion. In normal
circumstance, a priest can't say, "I'm only going to give the Eucharist
on the tongue." Nor can a priest demand that everyone who comes
to Communion receive only in the hand. It is the individual (The
Communicant) who decides how he is going to receive The Lord.
(This option is applicable only in countries whose national bishops'
conferences have applied for and been granted permission to
authorize Communion in the hand, of course.)
If you were to ask me what is the proper necessary
disposition as we approach the table of the Lord, I would say without
hesitation that it is faith deep belief in our Lord who is truly
present, body and soul, humanity and divinity who becomes present
at the words of consecration and who comes into our lives. That's
what really makes Catholics Catholic. Take away the Eucharist, and
we're like everyone else.
But then again, as one respected Canonist loves to say,
What do I know?

Fr. Gem
