History of Glass
-Glass can survive millions of years
-First glass was found in Syria around 5000 BCE
-First man made glass came from Eastern Mesopotamia and Egypt around 3500 BCE
-Always been used

Glass Production Process

Hot end process: in which new glass and recycled glass are melted in a furnace
Press-and-blow process: Individual Section (IS) machines are used to shape the glass,
plastic stage: at 1050-1200F, a blade cuts the class into cylindrical shapes called gobs
that roll into molds, metal plunger then presses the glass into the molds, creating
parisons, then put in final mold and blown into shape

Glass in a Landfill
Glass is chemically
inert and does not
break down chemically
in a landfill.
Glass erodes like rocks
do and takes around a
million years.

Tektites are opaque glass

created by meteorite impacts

Upcycle Projects

If Glass Wasnt Recycled or Upcycled

We throw away enough glass bottles to fill a 1,350 foot building.

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100 watt light bulb for
four hours.
One ton of recycled glass can save 42 kWh of electricity, 5 gallons of oil, 7.5 pounds
of air pollutants from being released, 1,330 pounds of sand, and 433 pounds of
Limestone and soda ash.

Glass Lifecycle

Starts of as the fine silica part of sand

Is melted into glass with certain metal oxides to make it colorful
Glass is then shaped into everything from water-glasses to eye-glasses
If Glass is then recycled it can be done so infinitely
However if it is thrown away it will persist for upwards of a million years in a
landfill

Math Connection
The following facts are from the University of Utah

The United States throws away enough glass every week to fill a 1,350-foot
building
Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for
four hours
Recycling glass takes 30% of the energy required to produce glass from raw
materials

What does this mean for us? What are the implications?
