Apodi Street
The attraction of this street and alleyways that cross
it is observing the type of occupation from the early
days of Natal. Narrow streets without sidewalks or with
very narrow sidewalks, where buildings occupy the
entire ground, nearing the limit of the street. It makes a
striking contrast with the broad Rio Branco Avenue, that
is transverse to it. The Apodi Street crosses Santo Antnio
Street, one of the first streets of the neighborhood, known
in the eighteenth century as the path for drinking water.
It had this name because it leads to Baldo Brook, from
where the water for daily consumption of residents used
to be taken. At the end of Santo Antnio Street, one comes
to the Santa Cruz da Bica, a cross marking the southern
boundary of the city, at the time it was founded.

Potengi Palace
It was built between 1866 and 1873, for hosting several
public offices. From 1902, it housed the state government,
which previously worked on a building on Chile Street. In
1954, it began to be called as Potengi Palace. The state
government worked in this building until the construction
of the Administrative Center in Lagoa Nova neighborhood.
In 1999, it received the name of Palace of Culture, where
the State Art Gallery of RN works, with exhibition of visual
arts productions, besides exposing the antique furnishings
of the Palace. It is a very representative building of the
neoclassical style, in its straight lines and sobriety. At the
back of the Palace, there is a courtyard where a fountain is,
consisting by a statue of a small indian holding a serpent,
whose mouth poured water. This piece used to be in Augusto
Severo Square.

Pax Lane
This lane, transversal the Cmara Cascudo Avenue,
separates the House of Cmara Cascudo and Bela Vista
Manor, being paved with dark colored, ferruginous
cobblestone. The process of paving began in Natal in 1904,
using material taken from the beaches of Meio, Ponta do
Morcego and Areia Preta. For a time, this type of pavement
was adequate, but with the advent of the automobile,
it came the need for a less bumpy pavement. Hence the
importance of is preservation by Jos Augusto Foundation in
2007 as a way to preserve an ancient technique used, being
a record of the history of the city.

EDIFICAES NO ENTORNO DA
PRAA AUGUSTO SEVERO
Buildings surrounding the Augusto Severo Square
Surrounding the Augusto Severo Square several impressive
buildings can be seen, built between the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries, such as Alberto Maranho
Theater, the former Domestic School, the now defunct
Augusto Severo School Group, the Board of Trade, the
Great Western Railway Station Company (now CBTU), the
buildings of the citys finest shops, like Paris in Natal and
the Polytheama cinema. These buildings, along with the
Augusto Severo Square compose what would be the first
vision of who arrived in Natal by train, and they showed the
modernity of the capital city. In buildings, the eclecticism
prevails, which was the architectural style of that time.

Inicialmente chamado de Teatro Carlos
Gomes, suas obras foram iniciadas em 1898
e concludas em 1904. Tinha aspecto mais
simples que o atual, com elementos do estilo
neoclssico. Na sua inaugurao foi encenada
a pea A promessa, do potiguar Henrique
Castriciano. Em 1910, o projeto do arquiteto
mineiro Herculano Ramos promoveu
uma grande alterao no prdio, sendo
preservadas apenas as paredes laterais.
ex-governador do Estado.

ASSOCIAO COMERCIAL E
EMPRESARIAL DO RN
Commercial and Business Association of RN
The Ribeira, from its origins, has been a business district,
where concentrated the merchants of the city, and was
therefore chosen to house the Chamber of Commerce at the
time of the Entrepreneur House. The building took nearly five
years to be completed due to lack of resources arising from
high prices during the beginning of World War II. Opened
in 1944, the building is very impressive, with decorative
elements typical of the buildings of the late nineteenth/
early twentieth centuries. As a prominent element of the
building, there is the entrance marked by a gap suspended
by large columns, which ceiling is richly decorated in plaster.
It is located in one of the oldest streets in the neighborhood,
the old Campina Street, which references already existed on
maps in 1870.

CONSULADO BAR
Consulado Bar
The Consulado Bar was built to serve as a residence to the
Italian Guglielmo Lettieri, appointed as the consul of Italy
in RN in 1938, his house was also the Italian consulate in
Natal. In one of the upper rooms, the floor forms a large
Nazi swastika and the floor of the lower hall features small
tiles with the swastika. The ambient is decorated with
objects that refer to that period. Near the Consulado Bar,
lies the Buraco da Catita, that is known for the concerts of
chorinho on Fridays. There is also, on the corner of Duque
de Caxias Avenue with Alexandre Jos Lane, the former
home of the doctor Janurio Cicco, built in the 1920s. In
addition to seeing patients in an office in the house, he was
the director of hospitals and helped with medical, technical
and texts about the city of Natal.

SEDE DO IPHAN/RN
Head Office of IPHAN/RN
Built in the early twentieth century, it had Fortunato
Aranha and his family as first inhabitants. He was the
owner of Cosmopolita Bookshop, one of the earliest and
largest bookshops in the city, located on Doutor Barata
Street, a meeting point for scholars, writers, politicians,
businessmen and bohemians. He was also a Municipal
Intendant in the early twentieth century. After serving
as a residence, it had multiple uses, whether commercial
or service. It has also undergone several changes and
additions, with various patterns and construction
techniques. The land on which the building stands, which
went up to the Cmara Cascudo Street, was reduced.
This building, in which the characteristics of gothic,
moorish and neoclassical architecture can be observed,
has been restored in 2012 in order to house the Regional
Superintendency of Iphan/RN.

GRANDE HOTEL
76
Grand Hotel
It was truly the first grand hotel in a city that had only
modest lodgings. Opened in 1939, it had guests such as U.S.
troops who came to serve in Parnamirim Field (American
base during the World War II). It also served as a place of
residence for both military and wealthy people who came
to live in the city with their families. It received important
politicians, such as Juscelino Kubitschek, artists and singers
like Orlando Silva and Nelson Gonalves, and the writer
Clarice Lispector. The Grand Hotel was a place of fun in the
city, with orchestras and balls at night and during carnival
festivities. In its restaurant, banquets were offered, often of
a political nature. On site, it currently works several Special
Civil Courts of RN.

Jos da Penha Square/ Church of Bom Jesus das Dores
The Church of Bom Jesus das Dores was the fourth church
to be built in Natal, and it was the first one in Ribeira, with
a record of its existence in 1776. There, it was christened
Cmara Cascudo folklorist and the poet Ferreira Itajub
was buried. As for the square, until 1919 it summed up in
a field in front of the church, the work being performed
at the site by orders of Fortunato Aranha, who was the
Municipal Intendant at that time. With that, the place
got flowerbeds, walkways and a gazebo, also occupying
the area which is now Tavares de Lira Avenue and serving
as a meeting point for young people. Both the square as
the church are quite changed, different from their original
appearance. One of the changes was the installation in
the square, in 1939, of a pumping station as a part of the
General Plan of Works, a design of the office of Saturnino
de Brito.

CASA DA RIBEIRA
Ribeira House
Originally, in the first decade of the twentieth century,
the manor harbored a guesthouse. Over time, it took
several uses, such as ships workshops, bakery and stores
of construction materials. Since 1988, it was closed, being
rediscovered in 1997 by the Clowns of Shakespeare
Theater Group, which was looking for a space for
presentation of spectacles. With resources from the
private sector, from the federal and state laws of Incentive
to Culture, the building was restored and adapted to its
new use. In 2001, the cultural space was inaugurated,
with theater, caf and exhibition hall. Since 2009, there is
also the Cultural 1911, a Point of Reading project of the
Ministry of Culture, with over two thousand books on arts
and literature in general, which can be consulted.

BECO DA QUARENTENA
Quarantine Alleyway
It is a narrow road, bearing this name because the older
prostitutes stayed in it, since could not find work in various
nightclubs in Ribeira, or those who contracted venereal
diseases. There, sailors who arrived with infectious diseases
also were isolated. Therefore, the alleyway, originally called
Panam Lane, became popularly referred to as Quarantine
Alleyway. The area which lays the alleyway, along with
Frei Miguelinho Street and 15 de Novembro Street, formed
a zone of low harlotry in the city. The police, along with
the army and navy, often made inspections on the streets
looking for troublemakers, using the Quarantine Alleyway
in order to coax them.

The house of Ferreira Itajub/Colonial Buildings
There is conflicting information about the birth of Manoel
Ferreira Virglio, the poet Ferreira Itajub. While some
argue that he was born in Touros, in 1876, a plaque affixed
to the building in Chile Street indicates that the poet was
born there in 1875. Controversy aside, Ferreira Itajub
had humble origins, and his writing began to be published
between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,
in newspapers and journals. In 1914, he published Terra
Natal (Homeland), a typically romantic work. Adjacent
to this house, there are two quite characteristic buildings
of the colonial period, with smaller size, simplicity in
construction and apparent roof. It contrasts with the other
buildings on Chile Street, which are eclectic or were adapted
to that style.

RUA CHILE
Chile Street
The Chile Street, then known as Rua da Praia (Beach Street),
was the first one existing in Ribeira and it started to be
occupied in the early eighteenth century. The first houses
were made of straw, then the warehouses were built of
stone and lime, which were used to shelter the products
sold by the province, such as sugar, cotton and others. In
the nineteenth century, the houses were built, where at
their bottom the business used to work and at the top, the
residences. This was the only stretch of Natals historical
center to receive a revitalization project, the Fachadas da
Rua Chile (Faades of Chile Street), in 1994, that consisted
in interventions in the buildings fronts. Along this pathway,
buildings of various architectural styles can be observed,
from colonial to proto-modern ones. The Church of Nossa
Senhora do Rosrio dos Pretos can be seen from Chile
Street, in the neighborhood of Cidade Alta.

COMPANHIA BRASILEIRA DE
TRENS URBANOS (CBTU)
98
Initially called as the Central Railroad Station of NatalNova Cruz, it started incorporating the heritage of the
Great Western Brazilian Railway Company in 1901, a
company that later changed to Railway Sampaio Correa,
then Network Rail in the Northeast, until the arrival of
CBTU (1997). Built in the 1880s, the station was quite
different from the building with proto-modernist features
as now seen: the central part was like a cottage and on the
sides, which were on the ground, the ceramic roof could be
seen. The construction of this station, along with Augusto
Severo Square and other buildings nearby, compose an
