Answer 3 Questions

1. a) Light lubricating oil of CP 2090 J/kgK, flowing at 0.5kg/s is cooled from 375K to
350K in a small heat exchanger using 0.2 kg/s Water entering at 280K as the
cooling medium. The overall Heat Transfer Coefficient for the unit has been
estimated as 250W/m2K.
Calculate:
i)
The exit temperature of the water.
(4 Marks)
ii)
The required Heat Transfer area for Co-Current and Counter-Current flow
respectively.
(6 Marks)
iii)

b)

2.

Sketch the temperature profiles along the exchanger for each case. (6 Marks)

It is proposed to replace the Exchanger described above by a crossflow

exchanger of area 15.3m2 in which both fluids will be unmixed. A Pump is also
proposed which will increase the water flowrate to 1m3/hr. Estimate the exit
temperatures of both fluids for the new design. You may assume that the Overall
Heat Transfer Coefficient will be unchanged.

a) A cylindrical Nuclear Fuel rod of diameter 15mm is placed inside a

concentric, hollow, ceramic cylinder of inside diameter 35 mm and outside
diameter 110mm as shown. The Air gap between the cylinder and the rod has a
heat transfer coefficient of 10W/m2K. The Cylinder has a thermal conductivity
of 0.07 W/mK and its outside surface is maintained at a temperature of 30oC.
The Rod generates heat at a rate of 1MW/m3.
i)

Draw the thermal resistance diagram for the system as described. (6 Marks)

ii)

Estimate the temperature of the surface of the rod.

Figure 2A

(10 Marks)

b) In order to allow the rod to dissipate heat more efficiently and as a means of
supporting it, a stainless steel bar of thermal conductivity 13.4 W/mK, depth
10mm and width 4mm is placed in the gap between rod and Cylinder as shown.
You may ignore any heat loss by convection by the bar.
i)

Draw the thermal resistance diagram for the new system.

(6 Marks)

ii)

Estimate the new surface temperature of the rod.

Q3.

a)

Explain how fins attached to a surface enhance the heat transfer from a
surface.
(4 Marks)

b)

Explain how the addition of fins to a surface may, actually decrease the heat
transfer from a surface.
(4 Marks)

c)

Circular copper cooling fins of diameter 1mm, length 30 mm and

thermal Conductivity 380 W/mK, 4mm apart are used to enhance heat transfer
from a surface that is maintained at a temperature of 132oC. Each rod has one
end attached to the surface and the other end attached to a different surface at a
temperature of 0oC. The Air flowing over the fins is at 0oC and the Convective
heat Transfer Coefficient is 100W/m2K. See Figure 3.

i)
ii)
iii)

Calculate the temperature half-way along each fin.

(8 Marks)
Determine the rate of heat transfer through each fin and the fin effectiveness.
(8Marks)
What is the total heat transfer rate from a 10cm by 10 cm section of the
surface? You may assume that the same Heat Transfer Coefficient applies to
the fin and the un-finned wall area.
(9 Marks)

Q4.

a) List the assumptions on which the application of the Heisler/ Grober charts and
the One-Term approximation may be used.
(8 Marks)

b) In a Production Facility, 1 m square by 30 mm thick brass plates as shown,

initially at 25oC throughout are heated by placing them in an oven at 700oC
where the Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient for the system is 80 W/m2K.
The plates are kept in the oven for 10 minutes.
i)

Estimate the surface temperature of the plates.

(12 Marks)

ii)

How much heat will have been transferred to an individual plate in the
10 minutes?
(7 Marks)

c) Suggest another method by which this system could be analysed and justify this
suggestion. [It is not necessary to use this method]
(6 Marks)

Data for Brass: k = 110 W/mK = 8530 kg/m3 CP = 380 J/kg K = 33.9x10-6 m2/s
