CHAPTER 1 RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

Climate change and global warming is current battle all over the world, with the increase of
global warming there is also an increase in power consumption. Increase in power
consumption is posing a big challenge to most countries especially here in the Philippines to
be able to secure enough and be able to supply the electricity needs of the consumers. With
the high demand of energy in our country there are certain regions or areas that do not have
access to electricity most of this areas are remote or far from city proper areas.
There are different energy plants that have been created to be able to provide the needed
energy demand that the country have, but most of the electric generation plants are not
environmental friendly. The best alternative to developing countries for a sustainable
development in the future to to go green and tap on sustainable renewable energy, with this
the supply of energy will be fulfilled at the same time we will not be damaging our
ecosystem.
Renewable power generation can help our country meet the sustainable development goals
through provision of access to clean, secure, reliable and affordable energy. Sustainable
energy supply remains a main requirement of modern society in order to respond to the
increased demand caused by the larger consumption and population growth. Renewable
energy technologies are seen as some of the most important solutions for the future and they
need to be further developed in this century in order to take over most of the energy
production.
This study focuses on tapping on sustainable power generation to provide energy to a selected
area that do not have access to electricity by using an abundant natural resource available in
the region which is water. The study wants to provide energy to a remote community that will
not harm both the community and the environment thus the study focuses on renewable
energy.
1.1 Background of the Study
Philippines is a country that is looking for other sustainable resources to provide energy to
different areas of the country. There are different technologies that are using hydro resources
to be able to generate large number of energy to different community, but it seems that it has
not reached some areas of the country especially those area that are in remote regions.
Magallanes is a municipality of the province of Agusan del Norte in the region of CARAGA
Philippines. The topological area of Magallanes is mostly flat with swamps that is situated at
the mouth of the major rivers in Agusan which are Agusan river and Baug river. The major
livelihood in the area is aqua farming such as fish, prawn but with the breakout of disease and
lack of infrastructure such as electricity it lead to the collapse of the industry, thus the
community is going to another livelihood which is safety matches manufacturing.
Barangays that does not have road access can be reach through bangka or small boat that
they have to paddle manually.
The site is located 34km away from Butuan city, the only transportation access is through
small boats. The community is scattered and separated by water and mountain hectares of f

fishpond can be seen in the site. There is more or less 20% who only have access to
electricity since the location is hard to reach and only a few are able to afford to get access to
electricity since it will take a big amount of money to get the line through their houses or
fishpond.
This research would like to help the community in providing the community access to
electricity. An abundant of water resource will be tapped and a micro hydro water wheel will
be designed and used to generate 3 KVA or 2.4KW of energy to the community. This will be
able to provide electricity to the basic needs of a household.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
This study intends to improve the quality of life of the Namah community by providing them
access to electricity with a micro hydro water wheel energy generator and monitors the
generated energy through an SMS system since there is no on site access to internet. With the
design and implementation of the study electricity will be provide to a few houses in the
community without harming the environment and the residents in the process.
1.2.1 General Objective
To design and implement a micro hydro water wheel renewable energy that will provide
electricity to the community in Namah, Magallanes Agusan del Norte with real time energy
monitoring through SMS base.
1.2.2 Specific Objective
1. Design the hydro water wheel energy machine of the proposed study.
2. Develop the SMS base energy monitoring system.
3. Implement the hydro water wheel energy machine and SMS energy monitoring
system.
4. Test the functionality of the hydro water wheel energy machine in the community.
5. Fix any bugs with the monitoring system as they are encountered through the
implementation.
6. Perform a simple benchmark of the electric output through the monitoring system on
its current load.
1.3 Scope and Limitation
The proposed Hydro Water Wheel Renewable Energy Machine and SMS Monitoring System
have the following scope and limitation:
1. The materials for the water wheel machine are limited to available local products
only.
2. Testing for the machine and system will be limited to one (1) house for the mean time.
3. The energy monitoring system is through SMS base only.
4. Environmental factor is not considered on this study.
5. The estimated generated electricity will only be 3 KVA or 2.4 KW.
1.4 Significance of the Study

The researcher undertook this study for the following reasons:

1. This will improve the quality of life of the Namah community. They will have easy

access to electricity and become more productive with their daily chores.
2. The study will be using the existing water resources of the area and local products available,
thus the study will not need a big investment and be able to provide energy to the community.
3. With future modification the proposed study will be able to give energy to more house or
more community in the area and it can be adapted to different location with water resources in
the country.
