Preacher foils bold

assassins
New york, march 16. -

preaching the gospel with a

six shooter close at hand and
a gang of vice agents
constantly trying to kill you
might be calculated to upset
the poise and equanimity of
almost any minister, but not so
with rev. Dr. w. Spencer
carpenter of the bridge st.
a.m.e. church , brooklyn.
Because of dr.carpenters
attack on vice and gamblers he
was made the object of the
second attempt to kill him. The
attackers, however, barely
escaped with their own
lives.the preacher fought them
up an alley besides his church
and the last seen of the vice
agents they were disappearing
over a fence to escape the
bullets from the clergyman's
gun.
Dr. carpenter sat today in his
library with a bandage around
his forehead, his clashed up
raincoat lying on a chair
close by, several empty
cartridge shells on the table
and the rascal-- as he calls
his revolver--- lying under a
white handkerchief and
bulging up the linen in a
fashion that would never be
noticed.

Group of prosperous looking

members Of the congregation
were streaming in to inquire
how we felt after his battle
with the razor swingers, as he
called them.
The decent people in this
whole community-- the white
folks as well as the negroes-are behind me and are
indignant at the assaults. If
the time has come when the
church cannot stand up
against vice then it is time to
close up the churches. But just
as soon as i get feeling all
right again i will be back in the
pulpit-- and i will hit harder
than ever.
Dr. carpenter, who served in
the sixth massachusetts
infantry during the spanish
american war, said he had not
used a gun since those days,
nor had he used his fists. He
said that he did fear any one
molesting his wife or two
children and that he his wife
or two children and that he
would go about as if nothing
had happened.
But, he said, i will always
carry the rascal with me.

Asks U.s. military policy

in germany
Chairman kahn, of the house
military affairs committee,
announced today that he will
introduce a resolution in the
house today requesting the
president and secretary of the
war baker to state the policy
of this government in
connection with the use of the
15,000 american troops now in
german

Territory. The resolution will

inquire whether these troops
may be used to suppress the
german revolution .
Chairman kahn stated that it
was apparent there is a
sentiment in congress against
use of american troops to
suppress the revolution, and he
believes that it will be best to
have a definite statement of
the policy this government
will follow.
In view of the development
today, officials of the war
department are the opinion
that there is little likelihood
of the american troops being
used in germany.
A detailed report from maj.
Gen. henry t. allen , in
command of the american
forces in germany, is still
awaited. Unofficial reports
indicate there is order in and
about cobienz, where american
troops are stationed, and it is
not believed there will be any
movement by these troops
unless there are disorders.
