Hazard analysis of a feed stream of a mixture of hydrocarbons in a chemical plant

Process description
The process system to be analysed is part of a chemical plant and is a feed stream of a mixture of
hydrocarbons to a distillation column, which will separate the mixture into two or more fractions. The
three main equipment items are:

A feed storage tank, T-101

A pump, P-101
A feed buffer tank, T-102

The Figure shows a simplified P&ID drawing of the process part. Starting to the left hand side, a
liquid hydrocarbon (HC) mixture feedstock is pumped into T-101 from a tanker lorry or oil tanker
ship. From T-101, the HC feedstock is pumped to the buffer tank, T102, via pump, P101. From tank
T-102, the liquid HC passes to the distillation column via pre-heaters and pump, P-102. The function
of the buffer tank, T-102, is to enable water to separate out of the HC stream and be run off to tank, T103, which is for storage and eventual removal and disposal from the system. A site glass, LI-103, is
provided to show the operator when to drain off the water using valve, V-110. A list of instrument
symbols is provided below.

Assignement
The scope of the home assignment is to identify possible hazardous scenarios by applying the What
If methodology.
The assignment is as follows:
1. Identify possible scenarios/events (consequences) for the process part in the figure using the
What If methodology. (At least 10)
2. Describe possible recommendations to reduce risks associated with the identified
scenario/event.
The assignment should be e-mailed to Klas Engvall (kengvall@kth.se) not later than 9th of January
2017.
Good luck!!
