INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY

Introduction
Penfolds was founded in 1844. It has played a key role in Australian winemaking industry. It brought Australian wine to
the world stage with its most popular wine Grange Hermitage. With its long standing in Australian wine industry,
Penfolds has collected quite a few awards to its name. Currently, it is under Treasury Wine Estates.
History
In 1844, Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold came to Australia along with his wife Mary and daughter Georgina. They
brought with them French vine cuttings and after buying 500 acres of land in Mackgill, they begin cultivation and start
producing medicinal tonic wine.
In 1870 when Christopher passed away, Mary took over the business. With the death of Mary in 1895, the
responsibility of the company went in the hands of daughter Georgina and her husband Thomas Hyland. Having grown
as a company over the years, in 1920, Penfolds had a 50 percent share in annual wine sales across Australia, a fabulous
market presence.
In 1931, Max Schubert, aged 15, joins Penfolds. In 1943, Penfolds expanded itself by buying 303 acres of property
which included Auldana vineyard. In 1950, after the France tour, Max Schubert becomes determined to create wines
matching French wines. Through his efforts, the first vintage of Penfolds Grange Hermitage was produced in 1951.
In 1960, Bin 2 wine was created. Penfolds wines released the first vintage of Bin 707 which later became worldrenowned Cabernet Sauvignon in 1964. In 1983, Magill Estate Shiraz was released at Magill Estate, which was the
home to Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold.
