Industrial Image Processing

in the Quality Management

of Electronic Components

The requirements made of industrial image processing

in the quality management of electronic components
Industrial image processing is
being applied increasingly in the
quality management of SMT
component production. It is an
excellent instrument for making
tests and doing monitoring.
It is absolutely necessary to
apply industrial image processing systems on the way to zerodefect production.
We would like to illustrate what
demands and diverse testing problem are required of industrial
image processing using the
example of the component shown
here.
The components depicted are no
longer useful because of small,
hardly visible damage such as
bent or missing leads or excessively small or large distances
between the individual leads. This
means that they cannot be used
for equipping printed circuit
boards. The same applies to
components that cannot be
unambiguously identified because of improper marking.
These components have to be
checked to guarantee their functionality. And industrial image
processing is the ideal instrument to make a very fast test
even in the micrometer range.
The fast-paced production
speeds and the very small design
shapes make inspection with the
human eye impossible.

Industrial image processing essentially consists of two components:

1. recording the image and 2. evaluating the image
The image recording building block is responsible for gathering data.
For instance, one or several cameras records the shape, colour and
size.
The image evaluation building block is digital processing for the data in
a computer to get a precise statement on whether the object of the test
satisfies the requirements with regard to shape, colour and size.
If a component is going to be assessed for its qualitative features using
an industrial image processing system, it is necessary to deposit good
and bad, large or small, the correct dimensions, imprint and frab coding
in the system with the corresponding parameters.
Apart from these parameters, the correct components such as the
cameras, lenses, lighting, electronic components for the evaluation,
interfaces and evaluation programs (software) have an important role
to play.
The software is generally adapted to the customers specific testing
needs. This means that it is necessary to have not only the right hardware, but also a comprehensive selection of software modules.

Asentics industrial image processing means

great expertise and know-how

The examples of semiconductor tests shown here are only a small

selection of the requirements made of industrial image processing.
Other components can also be evaluated.
On the next pages we will be showing you various testing problems for
various components that Asentics has successfully solved.

Surface and lead inspection

Components are checked for damage and correct position in the tape.
A camera with switchable LED coaxial lighting is being used.

The components are observed from two views (from below and the
side) with special patented optical equipment, put together to one
image in the G6M computer and evaluated.

The distance, length and integrity of the contacts, parallelity of the

leads, the position of pin-1 and correct marking are checked.

The dimensional accuracy and integrity of the SOT component are checked
precisely. This also includes such things as body standoff, footlength, terminal dimension and pitch with an accuracy of 5 microns. This application automatically separates the components identified as bad from the useful components before belting.

Checking completeness and position

The marks of these special design shapes are checked for unambiguous identification of the components and contact surfaces to guarantee perfect contacting.

Completely equipped hybrids are checked for completeness and integrity before they are applied to the motherboard made of ceramics. Then,
the dimensional accuracy and position of the baseplate is checked
and evaluated after mounting.

The components identified as bad are also separated from the good
components before belting.

The goal is recognising defects at an early stage to prevent consequential damage when installing them into control modules.

What benefit does Asentics industrial image processing

bring the customer with electronic components?
Inspections, optimising processes and quality management

The benefits of Asentics industrial image

processing

Having your employees do visual inspection has become uneconomical in many cases because the defect rates are no longer acceptable.
This generally comes from a lack of concentration, improper optical
assessment, mistakes or fatigue.

Asentics industrial image processing is extremely compact and built

modularly.

In contrast, Asentics industrial image processing records every

defect, be it ever so sporadic. It assesses every testing object completely objectively without fatiguing, without a lack of concentration and
day for day, around the clock without taking a break.
Our systems are also capable of solving various testing problems at the
same time with 8 cameras per computer (for instance, geometric or
dimensional checks). Using several cameras allows you to increase
the cycle rates significantly.
Integrating our industrial image processing systems and the knowledge gained from this make it possible to control and accelerate a
number of internal processes.
A precise check and assessment of electronic components is increasingly becoming the prerequisite for optimising other processes. They
can be designed more efficiently and automated using Asentics industrial image processing so that manual interference by your employees
becomes superfluous.
Quality management systems are absolutely necessary these days to
be able to measure up to customer requirements. Depending upon the
direction of your companys production, there not only are national, but
also international directives that you have to satisfy.
For instance, DIN ISO 9000 9004 prescribes a complete testing certification. If you are lacking a certificate or if it is incomplete, your competitors will have the edge on you.
Asentics industrial image processing offers you an almost perfect
solution to documenting these testing or individual certificates.

At the customers request, our system can be reconfigured according

to requirements again and again.
Furthermore, our system can be excellently adapted to the customers
convenient specific operating interfaces.
Asentics offers you all-round one-source applications in quality testing
and quality assurance for electronic and electromechanical components.
We also offer comprehensive service and excellent detailed consultation either ahead of time and as a follow-up service.
