CHAPTER 4

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMENDATIONS

This chapter briefly reviewed the purpose and research

design of the study. In addition, conclusions and

recommendations were discussed.

Summary of Findings

1. The emerging themes from the lived experiences of the

mothers are:
Uncovering the eye-opening truth about pregnant

mothers perception

In this theme, it was inferred that male nurses should

be sensitive enough about his actions when rendering care to

pregnant mothers. Male nurses should deal individually with

each female client considering their cultural norms and

traditions. The care and approach for each of the clients

will have to be based on their needs. When a male nurse

perform a certain procedure to a pregnant mother, he must

first explain the procedure to the client and ask if it is

okay for her to be assisted by a male nurse especially if it

involved an intimate touch. It should never be assumed that

the experience of other patients will always be the same

with next patient. A nurse should bear in mind that all

patients/clients are different; therefore a nurse has to

utilize different approaches in dealing with different

64

patients. When assisting a mother during pre-natal check-up

or during delivery, a mothers agreement with the assistance

doesnt imply that all mothers seeking for help and

assistance will comfortably agree especially if intimate

touch is involved.

Essence of Professionalism. In this theme it explains

that the woman allowed the male nurse assisting her during

her childbirth because of the fact that they professionals.

The participants are able to accept it without perceiving it

as a negative. The participants fully understand that the

male nurses are just doing their jobs professionally.

Acceptance of the Situation Since Its a Professional

Dealing With Them. In a modernized world, the acceptance of

mothers being assisted by the male nurses has been common.

This goes a long with a condition that male nurses perform

their responsibilities professionally. Mothers will

understand them and accept male nurses in the world that is

commonly dominated by females. Professionalism is one big

factor/influence in the acceptance of mothers to the male

nurses in nursing world. Professionals tend to be respected

and not to be rejected by the care they can offer.

Moreover pregnant mothers acceptance of the male

nurses in there is associated with their appropriate

execution of their work or responsibilities in a caring and

65

professional manner.

Essence of professionalism really plays a big role in

the acceptance and perceptions of pregnant mothers to male

nurses care. To gain trust from the client, one should

perform their task and responsibilities in cautious, caring

and professional manner. As long as pregnant mothers can

assess that male nurses perform their task and

responsibilities professionally then a positive outlook from

the mother will be the outcome.

No Gender difference in caring. They also believe that

male nurses can provide an acceptable, desirable service as

the female nurse can, because they are still professional

and knowledgeable in the career they have chosen. Pregnant

mothers still accept male nurses especially when they were

able to evaluate how competent that male nurse in performing

his duties and responsibilities. As long as male nurses

perform their job with compassion and dedication, mothers

will appreciate and trust them and this will lead to

acceptance.

Capturing the impact of male student nurses to pregnant

mothers

All patients/clients want to be assisted by a

competent health care providers and being assisted by a

male-student nurse is another story especially if it

66

involves an intimate touch. The researchers identified the

theme Capturing the impact of male student nurses to

pregnant mothersto understand how male-student nurse affect

the perception and acceptance of pregnant mothers toward

male-nurses assistance during their pregnancy or delivery.

Feeling of Shame and Discomfort is Ignored. The theme

expressed by all participants was that they felt discomfort

and shame but this was ignored. Accordingly the participants

verbalized that they have ignored the presence of the male

nurse during their delivery because they were more focused

or they were concerned on giving birth.

Exploring the culture and practices of pregnant mothers

during pregnancy and childbirth

A cultures and practices play a major role to mothers

acceptance on male assistance during pregnancy and delivery.

For the researchers to further understand the mothers

perception to male nurses, researchers decided to review

some cultures and practices that greatly affect the

acceptance of mothers to male nurses care. It is necessary

for the researchers to really to understand the every

patients cultures and practices so that discomfort from the

both party will be lessen.

Considering Social and Cultural Norms.Cultures and

67

traditions play a major role in every persons action,

perception and character. There are cultures that really

prohibit male existence during childbirth because they

believe that this will be difficult for the mother to give

birth. L01 states that its in our culture that when a male

is present on childbirth, they believe that the baby is

having a hard time to come out. Understanding ones social

and cultural norms could be a great factor in rendering a

more comfortable care.

2. The main themes greatly influenced the mothers

perception and acceptance towards male student nurses care.

The main theme where identified below:

Gender Role.Gender role also affects the way patients

accepts a nurses care. Some patient still value the same

gender policy in terms of rendering care to a patient

especially when intimate touch is involve. Nurse with

different gender should be sensitive on how patients

response to the care given.

Kululanga, Sundby, Malata and Chirwa (2012)

presented that the male expressed the feeling of being

ignored by the health care providers because they were

not allowed in the examination room even in facilities

where privacy was guaranteed. The exclusion of men from

the examination room was seen as part of antenatal care

68

tradition that it was a womens issue and nothing for

the men. The data also showed that some health care

providers had a woman-centered approach to maternal

health care such that they portrayed some resistance to

involve men in antenatal activities that men could

easily participate in. Such practice demonstrates that

men are not taken as beneficiaries of the services but

as a means to get women to maternal health care

services.

Culturally Competent Healthcare Provider.Being culturally

competent healthcare provider helps alleviate the shame and

discomfort of both parties. Being culturally competent helps

a nurse on how to deal with different patients with

different cultures and practices. Culturally competent

healthcare professionals can result a better health care

services and a positive outlook of patients on the care

rendered by them.

As a healthcare provider, where culturally diverse

groups are increasing, this is a daily challenge for them

when providing appropriate and effective care for their

clients. In the United States (US), healthcare providers

over the past 15 years had identified threats upon provision

of effective care, namely culture and language, and to give

awareness to the society for the need of a culturally and

69

linguistically competent healthcare providers (Campinha-

Bacote, 2003; Lester, 1998a, 1998b; Lockhart & Resick, 1997;

Maier-Lorentz, 2008; Racher & Annis, 2007; Rees & Ruiz,

2003; Silva, 1994; Smith, 1998).

Efficient and Effective care.Efficient and effective care

also plays a great role to better healthcare services.

Performing every tasks with efficiency and effectively will

have a positive outcome and a better acceptance and

understanding of the nurse from the patients. Gaining trust

from each client/patient needs some efforts and one is that

being effective and efficient in rendering care.

Pregnant mothers common reason why they allow male

nurses to assist them is because they look at the male

nurses as professionals. The respondents view nursing as a

profession thats why they allow male nurses to assist her.

3. There are insights learned as the mothers share their

lived experiences and stated that:

The acceptance of mothers being assisted by the male

nurses has been common. This goes a long with a condition

that male nurses perform their responsibilities

professionally. Mothers will understand them and accept male

nurses in the world that is commonly dominated by females.

Professionalism is one big factor/influence in the

70

acceptance of mothers to the male nurses in nursing world.

Professionals tend to be respected and not to be rejected by

the care they can offer. Also understanding ones culture and

practices has an important function in the acceptance and

perception of female patient towards male nurses care

especially when exposing of body parts is necessary.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the experiences of

childbirth among women assisted by male nurses during

delivery was associated with social and cultural norms since

culture played an important role on the acceptance of

mothers of the male nurses care during their delivery.

The researchers were able to come up on a conclusion

that Cultural competence is necessary when dealing with

patients with different gender. And that despite the

professionalism, mothers handled by males student nurses

still experience certain degree of shame and discomfort due

to cultural and social norms.

But as time goes by, culture and tradition also undergo

some changes. This change has something to do with womans

perception and acceptance towards male nurses care. More

mothers already accept that nursing profession is not only

for female but also for male already. As the world became

modernized instant change occurs and one of that change is

71

that male are already allowed in getting involved in medical

field specifically in nursing profession. And the sense of

professionalism had played a great role in the acceptance of

mothers to the male nurses assisting during delivery, as

long as male nurses will perform their task in a caring and

professional approach mothers will accept and able to accept

their service despite from being a male nurse.

Recommendations

The findings of this study have implications for future

nursing research.

1. For future researchers, this phenomenological approach

can be used for additional or follow-up studies

utilizing a larger and more diverse population.

Additional participants would confirm saturation to a

larger population. It is also important to gather the

experiences of more diverse population. Additionally,

studies looking at experiences of female patients who

were assisted by male health-care provider on other

specialty units such as operating rooms, emergency

departments, or intensive care units would also assist

health care providers especially males in giving care

to patients;
72

2. To Nurses,
Theyshould be mindful on how they approach

pregnant mother especially when it involves

intimate touch because some practices may run

counter to patients preferences.

Male nurses should never neglect to explain what

procedure they are going to perform and ask for

the mothers blessing to perform such task to

prevent anxieties and lessen discomforts.Male

nurses should deal individually with each female

client considering their cultural norms and

traditions. The care and approach for each of the

clients will have to be based on their needs.

It should never be assumed that the experience of

other patients will always be the same with next

patient.
A nurse should bear in mind that all

patients/clients are different; therefore a nurse

has to utilize different approaches in dealing

with different patients.

3. Obstetrical health-care providers must understand the

experiences of mothers and consider their culture, or

beliefs regarding childbirth and make every effort to

give mothers the most valuable and superlative

experiences to ensure confidence and personal

satisfaction.
4. Clinical Instructors, when a male student assisting a
73

female patient he should make that the male student

nurse will always be accompanied by a female student

nurse so that shame and discomfort will be limited.
