Design Rationale/Narrative:

Introduction and Problem Statement

My name is Dylan Dyer and I work at Colorado's Finest Alternative High School in Englewood,
Colorado. CFAHS is a successful alternative high school that has been in existence for over 20
years. We enroll students from all over the metro area. In fact, only 17% of our student body is
from Englewood School District. The large majority of our students fit into the "at-risk" or
"alternative" category meaning they have not been successful at their previous high schools, for a
variety of different reasons.

At CFAHS, all teachers are required to have a "family" unit. Students are randomly given a
family teacher upon entry into CFAHS and they remain with this same teacher until they graduate.
The family teacher plays many different roles for their students. They are a teacher, guidance
counselor, registrar, advocate, mentor, friend, and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on. It is the
family teacher's responsibility to make connections with their students and become their major
support system at CFAHS. This bonding time can be critical to the student's academic success.

I will be meeting with my family unit every day during 4th period for the first six weeks of the
upcoming school year. This will be my time to connect with my students and establish positive
relationships and lasting rapport with them. I want to give my students the ability to express
themselves and allow them to share who they are with their peers and me. Also, I want to
introduce my students to the technology that they will be using throughout the school year at
CFAHS. This unit plan will allow me to give my students the opportunity to do these things when
they enter CFAHS.

Unit Objectives

The primary objective of this unit is to encourage my family students to reflect on their
personality and think about what makes them special and unique people. I want them to learn
strategies and methods to understand certain aspects of their personality and who they are. They
will also be gathering and organizing information and demonstrating the use of basic computer
and technology skills.

I believe that these are extremely important goals and objectives for me to be addressing with
my family students at the beginning of the year. By targeting these goals, I have a better chance
of developing lasting relationships with my students and these relationships will hopefully lead to
greater academic success.

Learning Activities

The exploration projects I have chosen to have my students complete will give me insight into
who my students are and allow me to interact with them more effectively. This unit is intended to
be self-exploratory for students and allow them to make sense of themselves and the world they
live in. I have taken a constructivist approach by giving my students a task, showing them a brief
tutorial of how to use a tool, and then they are given time to complete the task.

Each of the activities that we will complete are intended to be a part of their final project which
is the "All About Me" Weebly Site. These learning activities are appropriate for my learners
because they must feel connected and comfortable in their new school environment to ensure
their success.

Delivery System

This unit will presented through the use of a class wiki and a Google Doc instruction handout
provided on the course wiki. It is intended that the students create their own knowledge and
make sense of the tasks that I am giving them. This unit is meant to be explorative and personal
for the student, so I will allow them to work at their own pace.

Mediation
I believe that the media I am choosing to use (Web 2.0 tools) will greatly enhance the
student's experience during this unit. Each tool has been chosen for it's relevance to the activity
and it will aid in the completion of each task. The thing that I am concerned about is not having
this unit be dominated by the use of Web 2.0 tools. I want the tools to be successfully integrated
into each activity, but I don't want that to be the main focus. The tools I am using are only to aid
student creativity and thoughtfulness with each exploratory activity.

Leadership

I am planning on piloting this unit with my family students and then I intend on sharing this
unit with my co workers. I will be available to coach other staff members through this unit and
demonstrate how to use each tool, etc.
