I
t's wonderful that we are up to our
3rd issue of Creative Papercraft. It
is a lot of fun to share all of these
wonderful designers projects with our
readers.
This issue is all about 'love and sun'.
Valentine's Day is fast approaching
and summer is well upon us. So it's

With a new year upon us, it is time to take a look at the
latest trends and top products for 2017!
How to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Papercrafts
It is the beginning of a new year, so why
not take the opportunity to start fresh
and clean out all of your unused junk,
and use them for beautiful papercraft
creations. Everyone has heard of the
phrase turning trash into treasure! There
are plenty of ways to upcycle rubbish
items such as left over gift wrap, old
hardback novels, and broken jewellery.
Adding these items to your next
scrapbooking creation, gift tag or cards
will give them new life, and keep costs
to a minimum.

Decorating planners with papercraft
products and techniques is really
taking off. Plenty of crafters are taking
the time to embellish their diary and

cardstock is great fun, and the end
result is adorable. Personalising
your planner with stickers and

use them to build texture for a
scrapbook layout.
Old books Hollow out old, dusty
books to create a unique gift box.
By creating a new cover with pretty
accents and papercraft techniques,
the book will be given a new purpose.
Use the book box to hold sentimental
letters, or perhaps to store buttons
or other bits and pieces. Use the
leftover paper that was removed from
the inside of the old novel to decorate
other papercraft projects. The book
pages will look great as a background
for your scrapbooking layouts!
Jewellery When going through
old jewellery, keep an eye out for
embellishments really is the perfect
way to keep your daily schedule
on track. Start your new year off by
following through with your resolution

Textured backgrounds
Adding texture to your scrapbooking
layouts, cards and other papercraft
projects is a great effect that will build
interest in your design. Creating texture
by layering various cardstock and
paper pieces with different finishes
on to your background is a trendy
technique, and is very simple to do.
You can also create texture through

Creating shakers in your papercraft
projects is a lot of fun! These
dimensional elements can take the
form of simple shapes, such as
circles and squaures, or you could
create shakers in the shape of
letters, clouds or stars. The sky is
the limit when it comes to this trend!

Faux stitching
Faux stitching is always in style!
This sweet technique will always
add interest and texture to your
papercraft projects. It is a great
technique that can be used for neat
boarders or as an extension to your
stamp or sticker images. A quick
way to pierce your cards and give
the appearance of stitching is to use
a tracing wheel. Commonly used by
seamstresses, the tracing wheel will
provide clean indents to your card,
helping you to easily achieve this
cool effect.

Darkroom Door
A thriving business that pushes the boundaries of
photographic design in art rubber stamps

D
arkroom Door was founded
in 2007 by professional
photographer Rachel Greig
and graphic designer Stewart Yule.
While traveling throughout Europe
in their blue Kombi van, Stewart
and Rachel brainstormed an idea
that would combine their love of art,
design and photography into a range
of art rubber stamps and paper
products for the stamping and paper
craft industry. The name is inspired
by Rachels love of photography and
many, many years spent in black and
white darkrooms!

 Darkroom Door first started in
Rachels photography studio where
they manufactured the rubber stamps
in the darkroom space. Darkroom Door
soon outgrew this area and moved its
headquarters in 2009 to a larger art
studio and warehouse on the NSW
Central Coast, where they manufacture,
design and distribute Darkroom Door
products within Australia and export to
more than 18 countries worldwide.
Rachels journey into the craft
world began back in the 1990s when
studying for a Bachelor of Visual Art
at Newcastle University. Photography
was her major subject and after
graduation, Rachel began her career
as a professional photographer. During
this time Rachel began using rubber
stamps to create handmade cards,
and it wasnt long before she started
thinking about using her own photos
to design a range of rubber stamps.
Darkroom Door stamps are some of the
most detailed rubber stamps on the
market today, offering a unique design
that is high quality, deeply etched and
offers stampers the best stamping
results for their projects.
Darkroom Door offers rubber stamp
sets which are cling mounted and sold
in a clear DVD storage case. They
also produce several ranges of single
stamps such as Background Stamps,
Photo Stamps, Collage Stamps, Frame
Stamps, Word Block Stamps, Border
Stamps, Texture Stamps, Eclectic
Stamps and Quote Stamps. In their
paper collections, they offer Montage
sheets, Photochips, Filmstrips and
Wordstrips. These products are a
collection of photographs that can be
cut out and used in your own artwork.
Darkroom Door stamps are mainly
designed from Rachels photos.
Rachel has a passion for stamps and
this can be seen throughout her work.

I love the detail and the versatility that

they offer. You can be a beginner or
and advanced stamper and use these
stamps to create stunning cards. As
most of the stamps are designed from
my own photos, I also remember where
each photo was taken, so that makes it
even more special.
Rachel teaches classes in the
Darkroom Door Art Studio and travels
to craft stores to teach classes in card
making, art journaling and mixed media,
while also hosting Stamping Cruises.
Rachel believes that having the
opportunity to be surrounded by
creativity every day is one of the best
things about running Darkroom Door.
Whether she is on a photo shoot,
designing stamps, making artwork
or teaching classes, there is always
something creative going on!
We are always working on new
and exciting stamp designs. A lot of
stampers are interested in art journaling
and mixed media, so we will have more
designs to cater for those artists, along
with more stamps for card makers,
scrapbookers and other papercraft,
explains Rachel.
The future is looking bright for
Darkroom Door, with expansions and

Techniques

Embossing is the process of creating a raised image

or design in or on your paper. There are many
ways this can be accomplished in crafting, but the
most common techniques are embossing powder,
embossing paste and embossing folders.

Embossing

W
ith the advanced technique,
we will look at extending your
range of abilities with each of
the above products. This issue we will
look specifically at embossing powders.
Embossing powders react/melt with
heat and come in a variety of colours
and thicknesses. The powders need
something sticky to adhere to like ink,
tape, glue and even water.
While a lot of people may think
that embossing is very old fashioned
technique, its time to bring it back!
Embossing can make your projects
regal and sophisticated or aid in a
distressed look. Try out the techniques
below to bring embossing back to your
projects.

 Technique 1
Freezer Cracking
You will require: Watermark inkpad,
heat tool, 355gsm white cardstock,
glue, vintage picture of your choice,
clear embossing powder and your
freezer.
Glue the vintage picture to 355gsm
white cardstock and cut to size.

Generously ink the vintage picture
with Watermark inkpad.
Cover with embossing powder.

Multi-Layering Powders
You will require: A clear embossing
inkpad like Watermark, Puff Static
Away Pillow, heat tool, white
cardstock, a 2-step stamp like the
one pictured (Photo 1) and
2 different embossing powders.
I am using a Clearsnap Copper
and Silver.
powder at least 4 times. (Photo 4)
Put in your freezer. (Photo 5)
When you remove it from the
freezer, bend the paper and you
will see it crack. The thicker the
embossing the bigger the cracks.
Be careful not to lift the embossing
from the paper.
To bring out the cracks, blend
some distress ink over the top and
it will get into the cracks. Wipe off
excess with paper towel. (Photo 6)

You will require: Dylusion ink sprays,
Watermark inkpad, Puff Static Away Pillow,
heat tool, white cardstock, stamps of your
choice. Shown is the Kaszazz Mandala
Centres set, clear embossing powder,
blending tool and Distress Ink: Black Soot.

When I started scrapbooking and cardmaking

one of my first major investments was the
purchase of inkpads.

Lets talk about inkpads

ersonally, I had a passion for
Tim Holtz and all things distress,
so I started collecting his colours.
However, in time I discovered that the
distress inkpads would not always
provide me with the clean crisp stamp
image that I wanted, especially when
stamping sentiments.
As a beginner, this is where inkpads
started to get confusing! What do I
buy? Dye Inks, Pigment Inks, Water-
Based Inks or Waterproof Dye Inks?
Or should I be looking more at brands
verses types? Do I need to purchase a
Stazon or clear embossing inkpad? Do
you purchase small inkpads or full size
ones?
To answer some of these questions,
I began to purchase quite a number of
different types of inkpads to test them
out. I would like to share some of what I
have learned with you.
Speciality Inkpads
I definitely suggest you purchase a
StazOn Jet Black solvent inkpad and
a clear embossing inkpad. These two
inkpads are a great investment and
allow you to do a variety of techniques.
StazOn inkpads come in a variety
of colours and will ink onto non-porous
surfaces like plastic, glass and
metals, as well as your normal porous
cardstock and canvases. The ink dries
very quickly and you will notice a very
strong smell when you open it this is
the solvent base. Stazon has a refill and
its own cleaner available. The cleaner
is stronger than normal which allows
you to clean this stubborn ink off your
stamps.
The clear embossing inkpad would
be the most used inkpad in my
collection and dries slowly to allow you
to emboss with powders. The clear
ink is also used for watermark and
resist techniques, which enables you
to develop texture and layers to your
project.
Coloured Inkpads
To help show the differences of the
variety of colour inkpads available, I
did a comparison using Distress Ink,
Colorbox Fluid Chalk, Stampin Up!
Water based Dye Ink and Close to my
Heart Mini Pigment ink. I trialled the
inkpads with a rubber Kaszazz Ying
Yang stamp and a Close to My Heart
My Acrylix clear Ornate Blossoms
Flair stamp, as I have noted that some
inkpads react differently to rubber and
clear stamps.
Results:
The Distress results are as suggested
they are not clear and crisp, but
remember, this is how they are
supposed to look.
Colorbox Fluid Chalk gives a good
result but no-where near as clear as the

Close to my Heart lighter colours
come up well on dark cardstock.
Stampin Up! image. But again, as the
inkpad suggests it is supposed to look
chalky. So, if this is the effect you are

after, the Colorbox Chalk inkpads are a
great option.
Personally, the Stampin Up! inkpad
was the best performing for both types
of stamps used. Clear, crisp and solid.
The Stampin Up! inkpads will also react
with water as they are water based,
just something to keep in mind when
making your purchases.
The Close to my Heart Pigment is
wonderful for the Polymer stamp, but it
did struggle with coverage of the rubber
stamp. Again, it was a great sticky
inkpad that covered well.
Note that the lighter colours of the
pigment Close to my Heart come up
well on dark cardstock.
Embossing
To use your coloured inks with
embossing powders, the ink needs
to be wet when applying the powder.
The juicier your inkpad, the better
the result.
Distress Inkpads
I believe that the Distress inkpads
deserve a category all of their own.
The Distress Inkpads designed by Tim
Holtz have rather unique properties as
they are water-based, dry slowly and
react with water. The colours blend well
together when using a blending tool and
when mixed with a bit of water, produce
a lot of different effects for you to try.
These inkpads are well worth a try.
In the end it will come down to your
personal choice and what you like the
best. I hope this article has given you
a little simple guide about some of the
inkpads on the market that you might
come across or which ones might be
your next purchase.
