Cornell Notes Topic/Objective: Cell Membrane - Passive Transport Name: Jocelyn Hernandez

Essential Question:

Questions: Notes: Functions of a cell membrane: protects and supports the cell.
Regulates the transport material in and out of the cell

What is the main thing that Lipid bilayer: a double layer sheet of phospholipids that makes up
the cell membrane needs the cell membrane. It provides a flexible structure that forms a
to work? strong barrier between the cell and its surrounding.
`
Polar/Hydrophilic: water-loving heads face out
Nonpolar/Hydrophobic: water hating tails face inside rear

Why are molecules Fluic Mosaic Model: cell membrane is made up of many different
so important to the parts that freely move.
cell membrane?
Small molecules: go through protein channels
Large molecules: have to get pumped

Imbedded proteins integral and peripheral protein surface are two

proteins

Embedded Proteins: proteins are embedded in the lipid bilayer.

Acts as a channel or pump that helps move material across the
membrane.
Why is it important
for the molecules Carbohydrate Chain: Acts like chemical identification cards
to pass the cell allowing individual cells to identify one another.
membrane?
Selectively Permeable: some substances can pass through the cell
membrane but others cant

Nonpolar/Hydrophilic: pass through easy

Summary: The lipids bilayer makes up part of the cell membrane, its the head. When the head has fatty tails, its
called a phospholipid which also makes up part of the membrane. The molecules inside and outside the cell
membrane have to be equal in other for the cell membrane to function right. If there is not an equal amount on both
sides, then the molecules will pass by the semi permeable to get passed to the inside or outside. If the molecules
are small and non-polar it can pass by the semi permeable. If the molecule is large and polar it has to get pumped.

Questions: Notes:
Passive Transport: Movement of substances into/out of a cell without using energy.
Three type are simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis.
Do the molecules
always have to be Brownian Motion: molecules randomly bounce around until theyre spread out
moving in random equality. The dynamic equilibrium equals motion.
motion?
Simple diffusion: molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration
Why is it important
to have diffusion in Facilitated Diffusion: Larger molecules require help to pass through the cell membrane
the cell membrane?
Osmosis: Diffusion of water through the cell membrane

Hypertonic: higher concentration of water and low concentration of

Which one of these solute
are more Hypotonic: higher concentration of solute and low concentration of
important? water
Isotonic: equal of amount of both
Summary: The passive transport chain does not require energy. The tree types are simple diffusion, facilitated
diffusion, and osmosis. Simple diffusion lets small molecules pass through the cell membrane. Facilitated
diffusion lets larger molecules pass by the cell membrane. Osmosis is the diffusion of water in a cell membrane.
As you can see, the tree types of passive transports help molecules pass through and diffuse.
