MCR 3U1 Chapter 5 Review: Trigonometric Functions

Part 1: Graphing Trigonometric Functions

1) Find the equation of a cosine graph which has amplitude 5, period 36o, phase shift of 10 o left
and vertical shift of 2 down.

2) Find the equation of a sine graph with amplitude 1, period 400 o, phase shift 50 o right
and vertical shift 3 up.

3) The graph y = sinx is reflected in the x-axis, stretched horizontally by a factor of 3

and shifted up 4 units. Find the equation of the resulting graph.

4) The graph y = cosx is stretched vertically by a factor of 2, compressed horizontally by

a factor of 4 and shifted 20 o left. Find the equation of the resulting graph.

5) Give the equation of any sinusoidal function with period 100 o and range
{8 y 0, y }

6) Graph 1 cycle of each of the following functions. State the amplitude, period, domain
and range of the graph.

Part 2: Applications of Trigonometric Functions

1) A ferris wheel has diameter 15m and makes 2 full rotations each minute. The lowest
point on the wheel is 2 metres above ground.
a) Sketch a graph showing how the height of a rider above ground changes during a 2
minute time interval, starting at the lowest point. Use seconds for your horizontal
units.
b) Find an equation for your graph.
c) List all of the times in the first minute when the rider is level with the centre of the wheel.

2) A modern art sculpture in front of a museum includes a large clock. The minute hand
of the clock is 0.8m long and the centre of the clock is 1.8m above ground level.
a) Sketch a graph, showing how the height of the end of the minute hand changes from 10am to
11am.
b) Find an equation for your graph.
c) Find the height of the tip of the minute hand at 10:40am.
d) Find the first time, after 10am, when the height is 2.4m.

3) A dead tree branch is partially submerged in the ocean. At low tide, the water level is
0.5m below the highest point on the branch. At high tide, the water level is 0.1m
above the highest point on the branch.
a) Graph how the water level changes, relative to the top of the tree branch for a 24 hour time
interval, starting at high tide. Remember that tides have a period of 12 hours.
b) Find an equation for your graph.
c) If high tide ocurred at noon, find the height of the water relative to the tree branch at 4:30pm
and at 6:45pm.

Answers: 1b) h = -7.5cos12t+9.5 1c) t = 7.5s, 22.5s. 37.5s. 52.5s

2b) h = 0.8cos6t+1.8 2c) 1.4m 2d) 10:07am 3b) h = 0.3cos30t-0.2 3c) -0.41m , -0.48m
