Cell Membrane

Materials: Handouts/Transparencies:

Small balls (to represent water) Dialysis Tubing Lab Rubric

Larger balls (to represent glucose)
Net with small holes that will prevent
the larger balls from passing through
but all the small balls through

Reserve (A/V, field trips, etc.): HWK:

Projector Dialysis Tubing Lab Report

What are students to learn?

Structure of the cell membrane

Specific functions of the cell membrane
What molecules can move across the membrane using simple diffusion
What simple diffusion is and how it work
What osmosis is and how it works
How diffusion and osmosis are similar and how are they different

What should students already know?

Cell membrane is an organelle

Enduring Understanding(s):

Biochemical compounds play important structural and functional roles in cells of all
living organisms.

Overall Expectation(s):

B2. investigate the chemical structures, functions, and chemical properties of

biological molecules involved in some common cellular processes and biochemical
reactions
B3. demonstrate an understanding of the structures and functions of biological
molecules, and the biochemical reactions required to maintain normal cellular
function.

Specific Expectation(s):
SBI4U
Cell Membrane

B2.1 use appropriate terminology related to biochemistry, including, but not limited
to: active and passive transport, covalent and ionic bond, allosteric site, substrate,
substrate-enzyme complex, and inhibition [C]
B2.2 plan and conduct an investigation to demonstrate the movement of
substances across a membrane (e.g., the effects of salt water and distilled water
on a potato) [IP, PR]
B3.6 describe the structure of cell membranes according to the fluid mosaic model,
and explain the dynamics of passive transport, facilitated diffusion, and the
movement of large particles across the cell membrane by the processes of
endocytosis and exocytosis

Lesson: Strategies

(5 min) Mind On (Hook): Have students create a mind Mind Map

Structure and composition

(5 min) Hook: Semipermeability demonstration Demo

Based on the following video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7hP7QUpkWU
- Two students will be assigned to hold the net
- Place the larger balls on one side and the smaller balls on
the opposite side.
- Instruct students to throw the balls through the net, aiming
at the holes that have been cut.
- Discussion questions:
- Were there any glucose molecules found on the
other side of the membrane?
- Were there any water molecules found on the other
side of the membrane?
- Why do you think only the water molecules made it
through to the other side of the membrane
- Introduce the term semi-permeable

Inquiry
(30 min) Dialysis tubing Inquiry
Students will be provided with materials
Students will be provided a problem to solve:
How can we demonstrate the processes of
diffusion and osmosis using this dialysis
tubing (a semipermeable membrane)?
Students will have to propose a procedure and have
it approved by the teacher before proceeding
Students will answer questions after they have
completed the inquiry process
