to choose?
Gathered necklines are
well-suited to petite
busts and help narrow
shoulders. A sweetheart
design features two
curves over this area,
which drop and meet
at the cleavage to
resemble a heart shape.
Its a particularly flattering
neckline, especially for
bigger busts, and is
also much softer than a
V-shaped neckline which
fails to suit all frames.

Whats your Simplicity size?

Remember to use your body measurements to
find your pattern size, NOT your ready-to-wear
size, that youd buy in the high street shops.

Sew it right
When sewing, always make sure you clip seams into the curves to allow the
fabric to lie as flat as possible and get rid of any bulky seam areas. If opting
for a sweetheart neckline, always measure correctly to ensure the middle
sits at the cleavage to ensure the perfect fit. This shape is designed to
accentuate your curves, which suits the full skirt of Simplicity 8051. Add thick
straps that cross over at the back if youre a fan of the 50s-inspired look.

for the Christmas party. Great equipment and thorough
preparation before you start is the key to a great finish.

Cutting edge
When dealing with silky or stretchy fabrics, always use really
sharp scissors or a rotary cutter. The latter must be handled
carefully keep it covered whenever it leaves your hand and
always use a self-healing mat, plus a gridded or shaped ruler
for the curves. Practise on scrap fabric and always cut away
from yourself to lower the risk of accidents.
Vogue 1514
Sizes 6-22
Keep it sharp
Treat yourself to some new pins and dont be tempted to fill your
pin box with odds and ends that you find in garment packaging.
These wont be very sharp and may mark your fabric.

MOCK Getting started

WRAP Iron the pattern under a tea towel before pinning onto your
STYLE pressed fabric. Use pale threads when transferring pattern
markings as dark thread may leave visible fibres in the fabric.
Cut out the pattern pieces and pin them together using the
correct seam allowance. Try this pinned pattern on half of your
body and you will get a good idea about the fit and proportions.

Machine sewing
Always put in a new needle and use the same thread top and
bottom on your machine. Wind your bobbin evenly as this will
affect your lower tension. I always wind a couple of bobbins
before I start a new project, to prevent any interruptions.

As the nights draw in, the temptation to cosy up indoors with our sewing machines

wear something different to everybody else. I was set
against spending hundreds of pounds on a dress that
was only ever going to be worn once, and so I decided to

My parents wanted me to have the best possible
tools to sew my special dress and so they bought me my
wonderful Janome machine. It was (and still is) perfect
for the job. Bright, shiny and new, it made sewing my
prom dress a dream come true and has been my beloved

work like a dream. Theyve seen me through a wealth

Barleylands Craft Village in Billericay, Essex,
which is home to 40 craft and retail studios,

the year they run regular patchwork quilting
classes with tutor Jacqui Smith (plus lace

journey with a sampler quilt. After this, many
students continue with projects of their own
choice, using jelly rolls and trying folded
patchwork and various appliqu techniques.
The classes run once a month, and students
are required to pay a 60 deposit for the first
four sessions, followed by another 60 to cover
the next four. The classes cater for four to six

Our delightful picture quilt overleaf, designed by Corinne Bradd, has a very
cosy Nordic feel with clusters of houses nestled amongst snowy hills and
wintry woods. The Festive Forest collection from Michael Miller Fabrics works
beautifully for this, featuring cute critters, fir trees and spotty patterns that really
pop against the white background.

Sew advice
Clip valleys, notch mountains
Snipping at intervals along a seam allowance is vital for
a smooth curved edge. Clipping concave curves allows
the material to stretch further, and removing V-shaped
notches from convex curves prevents material bulking.
Its also important to cut at a diagonal besides corners
to remove excess fabric. Remember to get close, but
dont cut through your stitching.
