LESSON PLAN

DATE:30-01-2016 TIME: 10:20-11:40

SUBJECT: Physics DURATION: 80 minutes

TOPIC: Motion Time Graphs AGE RANGE: 14-15 FORM: 4th

SUBTOPIC: Motion Time Graphs Velocity time graphs

GENERALIZATIONS: Motion is a change in position of an object over time.

CONCEPTS: velocity, acceleration, distance, time, displacement

OBJECTIVES:
Recall the definition of a vector quantity
Recognise the vector quantities that are associated with motion
Work cooperatively in groups.
Record the measurements of time correctly
Plot graph of velocity vs time correctly
Demonstrate an understanding of the graph velocity vs time
TEACHING STRATEGIES/METHODS

Guided discovery, Cooperative Grouping, Lecture-discussion

RESOURCES/TECHNOLOGY: Projector, laptop, worksheet

SET INDUCTION: Play video of Usain Bolt running the 100m at the 2009 World
Championships and ask the students based on the screen in which direction is he travelling.
Draw on the chalk board a table of velocity and time splits for his 100m run. Ask the students
to determine a way in which this information can be displayed. Hopefully they say via a
velocity time graph. Failing this introduce the lesson of velocity time graphs.

Velocity 0 5.38 9.80 11.00 11.5 11.65 12.00 12.00 12.00 12.00 11.20
m/s
Time/s 0 1.89 2.88 3.78 4.64 5.47 6.29 7.10 7.92 8.75 9.58
LEARNING ACTIVITIES/ EXPERIENCES:
Group students where as a group they will observe a video being shown where a car
accelerates from rest to a maximum speed and then decelerates back to rest again
going in a direction from south to north.
Instruct each group that they will be observing one aspect of the video to observe and
record readings of :
1. The time at which the speedometer starts to rise (when the car just moves from
rest)
2. The maximum speed the car reaches
3. The time in the video in which it reaches the maximum speed
4. The time in the video when the car starts to slow down
5. The time in the video in which it returns to zero
Write the results on the board
Instruct students that in their groups use the results and draw and label a velocity time
graph
Discuss and analyse the graph with the class
Draw a rough sketch of the graph on the board
Separate the graph into three segments, two triangles and a rectangle
Ask a student to state the equations to find the area of the shapes
Ask the students to calculate the area of each shape and determine the unit obtained
Add the areas calculated together
Inform the students that the area under a velocity time graph is the distance travelled.
Distribute worksheet on a velocity time graph

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES:

Worksheet will be collected and graded.

CLOSURE: Review the main points of the lesson analysing the Velocity Time Graph.
