General GC1000 Mark II Communication

Specifications Function and GCMT Gas Chromatograph
Maintenance Terminal
GS 11B03G03-01E

n OVERVIEW
Two types of communications are provided for GC1000 Mark II process gas chromatograph: DCS and personal
computer (PC) communications.
DCS communication transmits analytical and other data to a DCS systems, such as CENTUM, in digital form.
PC communication is provided for maintenance of GC1000 Mark II. By incorporating GCMT package software in
PC, the PC can keep chromatograms, check them by superimposition, and save other data. This makes it possible
to handle higher quality data and makes operation easier than conventional method that mainly use recorders.
In addition to the above-mentioned communication, Analyzer bus using Ethernet is also provided. About analyzer
bus, refer to GS 11B06A01-01E Ethernet Analyzer Bus System.

2. Operating Outline of GC1000 Mark II
(1) Status and Operation Mode
The GC1000 Mark II has the following statuses:
Process: Normal measurement, calibration and validation
Stream Sequence: Continuously measures streams in order specified in Stream Sequence
Stream (continuous): Continuously measures the specified stream
Stream (1 cycle): Measures the specified stream once
Calibration/Validation: Performs calibration or validation of the specified number
Manual: Manual operation
On/off of various valves
On/off of stream valves
On/off of several heaters
On/off of several types of detector (only On for FID and FPD)
Lab: Measurement with automatic peak detection, like a laboratory GC
The GC1000 Mark II has the following operation modes:
Stop: Mode in which the measurement stops
Run: Mode in which the measurement is running
Pause: Mode in which the measurement pauses

Reference: An Examples of Error Control by Distributed Control System (DCS)
1. Parity Check
Even parity is used for GC1000 Mark II communication outputs.
When an odd parity is received, the DCS regards the data as invalid.
2. Check of Header
Each communication packet begins with two alphabet characters.
The DCS regards any packet beginning with unidentified characters as invalid data.
3. Check of Value
Analysis results and other data in a communication packet are numeric values.
If data contain a non-numeric character where a number is supposed to be set, the DCS regards the corresponding
data as invalid.
The decimal point position can also be checked.
4. Check of Number and Order of Components
The number and order of the analysis result data are fixed.
If the order of received result data is wrong or too many data are received, the DCS regards them as invalid data.
5. Check of Character Length
The length of a communication output is fixed to 45 characters.
The DCS regards any communication output having a length other than 45 characters as invalid data.

n GCMT GAS CHROMATOGRAPH MAINTENANCE TERMINAL

The GCMT gas chromatograph maintenance terminal is package software for the PC to maintain the GC1000 Mark
II.

1. Operating Conditions
Model: IBM PC/AT compatible machine that can run Microsoft Windows
OS Microsoft Windows Vista Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4,
Bussiness Edition Microsoft Windows XP SP2
CPU 32 bit - 1 GHz or higher Pentium II 350 MHz or higher
Memory 1 GB or more 256 MB or more
Hard disk 80 MB or more (for program and data)
VDT resolution VGA (640 x 480) or higher
Others Printer
CD-ROM drive

2. Communication Specifications
Communication Standard: RS-232C (between PC and communication converter K9404LA)
Communication Rate: 19200/38400 bps
Parameter: 8 data + 1 stop bit, without parity, XON / XOFF control

3. Functional Configuration
The GC maintenance terminal basically has the next two functions.
1 The number of analyzers that can receive service simultaneously is one.
2 Only the data that the analyzer currently has are handled.
(1) Connection Link to Analyzer
The database is always updated. The operating commands from PC are transmitted to the analyzer on a real-time
basis.
(2) Operation on the Display
The data in the database is indicated on the display and the display is updated with the messages for updating.
The operation mode can be changed and valves can be opened / closed on the display.
(3) Data Storage and Display
The database and chromatograms can be stored in files and redisplayed using the file display function.
(4) Data Computation Processing
The PC maintenance terminal computes and processes the analytical data and chromatogram data stored in the
files. Also, sophisticated computations and processing data for the analyzer can be easily carried out using general-
