1.0 Introduction

A DC-DC converter is to convert a fixed DC voltage to another DC voltage level. It can be

considered as DC equivalent to an AC transformer where the output voltage of the converter can
be higher or lower than the input. DC-DC converters are used in a wide range of applications,
including applications in traction motor control in electric automobiles, trolley cars, marine
hoists and forklift trucks. They provide smooth acceleration control, high efficiency and fast
dynamic response. DC-DC converters are also used in regenerative braking of DC motors as well
as DC voltage regulators. Generally, there are three types of DC-DC converters which are buck
(step-down), boost (step-up) and buck-boost converter.

2.0 The Design Task

You are required to design a uk converter that has an input voltage of 12 V. The output is
regulated at 18 V to supply a 50 W load. The inductor current ripple must not exceed 10
percent of the average inductor current and the output voltage ripple must not exceed 1 percent
of the average output voltage. You are required to select the components to be used and to justify
their required ratings. Describe your design with analytical calculations and compare them with
simulation results.
An enhancement topology is also intended to improve the performance of the conventional
uk converter. Similarly, the design of the proposed converter is required to meet the design
specifications.

3.0 Design Verification

All designs have to be verified using LTSpice/PSpice/Simulink/Multisim. You have to

specify the duty ratio, the switching frequency, the values of the inductor and capacitor, the peak
voltage rating of each device, and the current in the inductor and capacitor. You may assume
ideal components. Justify the components selected and evaluate the power efficiency of your
different designs. Compare your simulation results with the analytical calculations. Include all
LTSpice/PSpice/Simulink/Multisim waveforms that show the operation of the circuit at the
extremes of input and output conditions.

APPENDIX A

General requirement on Report

The report must be formatted with a font size of 12pt if Times New Roman or a font size of
11pt if Arial and 1.5 line spacing. Please ensure the paragraphs are properly aligned/
justified.

There should be List of Tables and List of Figures after the Table of Contents.

The report should be in chapters and the structure should not go beyond the second level.
Instead of adding subsections at the third level you may use bullets if required.

All information provided must be straight to the point, precise and all information must be
accordingly cited and well presented. Avoid plagiarism.

All figures and tables must have a title and be properly referenced i.e. indicate the source.

The report must be in binding.

References

All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly quoted to be
useful to the reader.
