Medan is the third largest city in Indonesia after

areas, with parks, lawns, and huge old Dutch houses
(now turned into government offices or commercial

shoddy shophouses sprawled together by the
hundreds in the commercial areas along with a few
modern style malls.
Look out for the motor becaks! A sort of motorized
rickshaw, they are a common sight throughout
Medan, spewing black smoke everywhere.
Overall, Medan isn't really a tourist destination, but
it's a convenient stepping stone to other places like
the 'weekend getaway' Berastagi, the island of
Penang, Malaysia and, of course the ever popular,
beautiful crater lake Lake Toba.

Many tourists choose to use Medan as a quick
thru-point to travel elsewhere in Sumatra, but the city
offers a glimpse of a large Indonesian city still
unfrequented by western tourists, and shouldn't be
quickly dismissed. However, Medan is more chaotic
and has a bit more litter than Jakarta or Denpasar
and open sewers abound. Furthermore, not as many
people speak English in Medan as in other large
Indonesian cities, but even a short list of useful
expressions goes a long way, and Sumaterans are
still unjaded by westerners.

buildings from the Dutch colonial era, like the Old City

variant of Hokkien known as Medan Hokkien, which
is almost identical to Penang Hokkien spoken across
the Strait of Malacca.
Medan has a very high level of education and many
younger people speak English very well. I have found
quite a few older people, those over 50 or 60 also
speak English and some even Dutch. If you find
yourself stuck just tell the person you need someone
who speaks English to help and there will be
someone there in a matter of minutes. Speaking
English well is a highly regarded skill by the locals so
anyone who does so is well known and can be found
quickly.
Bahasa Indonesia is also a simple language to learn
so get yourself a phrase book and learn a few simple
phrases, you will feel more clever as well and the
more you try to speak it the quicker you will pick up
the basics, its easy and fun and the locals will really
appreciate your efforts although they will laugh loudly
with you too.

By Rail
Medan is connected by rail to other conurbations on
the eastern coast of Sumatra, such as Tanjungbalai,
Rantauprapat, Siantar and Binjai. Executive,
business and economy class trains are available, but
if your budget allows, take the better class trains,
which are faster and more comfortable. Tickets cost
between Rp 9,000 (economy) to Rp 70,000
(executive).

Medan's international airport is known as Polonia
International Airport (IATA: MES) and is located
about 15 minutes from the city. It handles both
domestic and regional international flights. Domestic
departure taxes from Medan is Rp 35,000, while
international departure tax is Rp 75,000.
Medan is currently in the process of finalising the new
Kuala Namu International Airport, but when this might
actually happen is still uncertain. Be prepared though
as this new airport is a long way from the middle of
the city and taxi transfers will be much more
expensive.
Getting there: A Taxi into town sets you back around
Rp 40,000, unless you walk past the taxis in front of
the terminal and proceed towards the exit. There are
more taxis towards the exit, and if you bargain well,
you can get a taxi for only Rp 20,000 (Although this is
not easy to do as the road is quite bumpy and you
are likely to get run down walking along the exit road,
strongly suggest you negotiate with the taxi drivers at
the terminal). Metered taxis exist if you want to walk
outside airport. There is a Petronas Gas Station just
across the road in the left side of the exit. Usually,
some Blue Bird taxis are parked there. These taxis
always use meter and possibly more cheaper than
taxis in airport. If you know the public bus number for
your destination, it is Rp 3,500 per person, but those
unfamiliar with the Indonesian language are
encouraged to get taxis for their first transportation.

The central station for all larger buses in Medan
is Amplas Station Central (not located in the center of
the city though). This is where a lot of the smaller
minivans go as well, and where travellers need to go
to make connecting buses to further cities. Many of
the large air-conditioned buses perform overnight
routes.
Larger, non air-conditioned buses and large luxury
buses (often Mercedes) that are air-conditioned
(some have toilets on board, though they are
squatting toilets that are difficult to use when the
buses are moving, given driving habits and road
conditions throughout Sumatra).
As an example of prices from August 2005, expect to
pay around Rp 50,000-80,000 for an 8-10 hr
overnight luxury bus (without toilet saves about Rp
10,000+) trip, as in to Duri, Bukit Lawang, or Lake
Toba (Danau Toba). Such buses provide a small
snack and sometimes have televisions on board.
While seats are very comfortable by Sumatran
standards, all rides are swervy/bumpy and drivers
often play stereos quite loud during the entire trip
(unless a movie is available). Also, many buses have
smoking sections in the back, and sometimes,
smoking occurs in the front of the non-smoking
section by the driver if the driver is so inclined.
Earplugs are good accessories. Furthermore, while
the large luxury buses have ample stowage above
seats, keep valuables safe while you sleep.
Medan is not located by the sea but nearby
Belawan is a major port with domestic and
international boat and ferry services. Belawan is
listed as a visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry point
(see the Get in section of the Indonesia page).

Getting around
Medan city is swamped by becaks and taxis (the
preferable choice to get around). There is also a form
of public transport known as the angkot (small
minivan).
By Becak
Also known as trishaws or pedicabs. You have to be
good negotiator if you want to ride on becaks, with
price ranging between Rp 5,000-10,000 depending
on the destination (near or far).
Very few becak drivers speak more than a few words
of English, but a map and lots of pointing will get you
to the right place, even if it takes twice as long as you
thought.
As you can get a hotel taxi for Rp 35,000 to almost
anywhere in Medan, paying more than Rp 15,000 for
a longer ride is probably not a good idea. Local taxis
are now Rp 30,000 to almost anywhere. They will not
bargain much with visitors.
Public transport is not reliable, though they have
fixed price from one destination to other destinations.
Small minivans (called sudako or angkot by locals)
have painted numbers (1 to 267 in Medan) that
signify their routes, which even locals don't have
memorized. If you speak Indonesian, just ask where
people are standing by the roadsides which "bus"
number corresponds to your location and what the
price is in advance. When a van with the appropriate
number approaches, flag them down as they don't
make scheduled stops (just drive along a given route
and drop off passengers when told or pick up new
passengers when flagged). If you are a westerner, be
sure to confirm the price before getting in. This type
of transportation should only be braved by those with
a point-to-point knowledge of Medan and a working
knowledge of Indonesian so they know where to tell
the driver to stop, unless you have a local friend who
can take you around. Standard fee is now Rp
3,000/trip.
One easy route is Minibus #3 from the great mosque
(at the side of yuki mall) to the Medan Mall, which is
Rp 2,000.
Try to pick taxi from a reliable place such in front
of malls, shopping centres or airport. Many taxi
drivers will resist the use of a meter and want to
bargain. Taxis with meters may put them on, but then
say there is a minimum charge, Rp 20,000-Rp 25,000
- the metered fare will usually be far lower.
Try to avoid the use of taxis other than Bluebird or
Express and always use the meter as they are the
two most reliable taxi companies in Medan, this is a
general rule that applies throughout the regions of
Indonesia where either of these two taxi companies
are available.
Express Taxi - +62 61 455 2211. White color
taxis (usually Toyota Vios), they can usually be
found around Medan, especially around central city
and mostly use meter. Call in advance and they will
come in time too (minimum fee by call is Rp
25,000).
Blue Bird Taxi - [link] +62 61 846 1234. Blue
color taxis, the newest taxi company to start
operate in Medan. Friendly drivers and always use
meter. Minimum fee by call is Rp 20,000.
If you must engage in bargaining a non-metered
journey then a taxi cost anywhere in central Medan
should be Rp 20,000 or less. However drivers may
ask for Rp 25,000. Higher fares are only justifiable for
longer distances, such as to Pinang Baris bus station,
about 10 km, which should cost no more than Rp
50,000.

Berastagi - popular mountain resort for weekend
getaways, for Medan locals. About 1.5 hours drive
from Medan. Check out other references to
Berastagi, which is pronounced Brestagi by the
locals. It's a really beautiful place. You can hike the
two nearby volcanoes, Sinabung and Sibayak.
Kabanjahe - the capital of the Karo Regency. You
can observe and experience the life of Karo people
by visiting the villages around Kabanjahe. Kabanjahe
is also a convinient post to climb Mount Sinabung. If

Airport Alert: If you are a foreign tourist, you are
required to fill in a form at the Fiscal Check counter
stating that you are not an Indonesian citizen or
KITAS holder. This necessity because unlike Jakarta,
Surabaya or Denpasar; where locals are required to
pay Government Fiscal Fare when they're travelling
abroad, Medan did not charge this fare. Thus this is
not required at Jakarta or Denpasar. Starting 2009
though, all Indonesian citizen with tax payer number
(NPWP) are released from paying this Government
Fiscal Fare. So be prepared to fill in a very small form
with your name and passport details stating that you
are not a citizen or holder of KITAS.
Also be prepared to have your passport and boarding
pass checked by any number of people, many
standing right next to each other, and not letting you
pass until they have all had a long look at your
passport. Do not expect any friendliness from the
airport officials here either, listen carefully to all
announcements, and then ask a local what is going
on, it is the only way to find out how many hours your
flight is being delayed.
Also be very careful with your check in luggage, there
seems to be a gang of thieves working at the airport
and they will break into your suitcases regularly (6
times for us in 6 months so far this year) even if there
is nothing of value in them. Another good reason to
check in as late as possible. The police will refuse to
do anything about it, as have the airlines involved so
far, although one has promised to look into it, the
other refused to take our complaint saying its not
their problem, so good luck with your luggage
especially if you are flying to Singapore.
The departure area has now been vastly improved.
Originally there was absolutely nothing to do, yet now
there are plenty of shops, cafes and entertainment. If
you have a morning flight on the weekend there will
be no traffic so allow 10 minutes from your hotel to
the airport. Check in and passport control is 10
minutes. Feel free to leave as early or as late as you
please. ( I am not sure who put the information about
there being plenty of shops, its kind of true but they
all sell the same old souvenirs that you can buy
anywhere that are mass produced and as for cafes
restaurants and entertainment, I have no idea what
this person is talking about because as of last week
there was a Dunkin Donuts and a local warung there,
nothing inside the terminal worth looking at).
It seems that flights into and out of Medan are
delayed more than any other airport I have been to in
Indonesia, and those with international connections
seem to be the most delayed. If you are taking the
Silk Air flight any evening back to Singapore it is
strongly suggested that you call the airport and check
how many hours the delay. My record to date is 6
hours, although my friends tell me they have had
delays of up to 24 hours just to get back to Jakarta on
a domestic flight.

Lake Toba

Understand
Lake Toba is an immense volcanic lake covering an
area of 1,707 sq km (1,000 sq km bigger than
Singapore) with an island in the center. Formed by a
gigantic volcanic eruption some 70,000 years ago, it
is probably the largest resurgent caldera on Earth.
Some studies say it might have been associated with
causing previous ice age/climate change and the
largest human population bottleneck ever. Genetic
estimates suggests that there were only a few
thousand individuals that survived the catastrophe.
The island in the middle - Pulau Samosir - was joined
to the caldera wall by a narrow isthmus, which was
cut through to enable boats to pass; a road bridge
crosses the cutting. Samosir island is the cultural
centre of Batak tribe who are mostly Christians in the
modern days.
Lake Toba was perhaps once more popular than it is
nowadays, but for many it remains a firm fixture on
the Banana Pancake Trail. It is a great laid back

place to chill out for a few days after jungle trekking
etc. The location is very popular with Chinese tourists
around Chinese New Year, when availability drops
dramatically and accommodation costs sky rocket.

There are hot springs on the western side of the
island just across the causeway from Pangururan.
The water is hot. Locals usually use their hands to
get some water out of the pool, standing in the pool is
possible, but you probably won't be able to swim.The
fee to enter to the surroundings is Rp 2,000. The
pools are free, there's some special foreigner pool for
Rp 10,000.

Kick back and relax after the frenetic atmosphere of
Indonesia. Swim in the volcanically warmed waters of
the lake or arrange an overnight 'party' boat out on
the lake if you can get enough volunteers together. A
beautiful place to do nothing at all. Plenty of second
hand book shops to stock up on reading material.

You can schedule a shared 7 passenger minivan to
Parapat, which costs Rp 80,000 IDR/person (7
seaters) and for 5 seaters is 100,000 IDR/person and
for private (5 seaters or 7 seaters) car service leaving
from Medan airport at scheduled times as well as
appointment its take and that costs Rp 600,000 with
Toyota Innova 7 seaters car and big trunk.With good
driver and many experience on the way to toba lake,it
makes you comfortable in the car. Alternatively,

However its on the island itself that you get the real
feeling of Toba Lake.
Parapat is connected to Tomok and Tuk Tuk on the
Samosir Island by boat/ferry that run every 1-2 hr, the
last one at 6PM (Rp 7,000). The place to catch the
ferry to Tuk Tuk is called "Tiga Raja" harbour/jetty.
Some ferry's owner are tourist hunter and will
overcharge you for Rp 20-30,000 for the same trip to
Samosir Island. In my opinion try to observe the ferry
with wooden bench inside and light green colored
ferry. Those are the ferries that charge Rp 7,000 and
the locals take to cross over. Self proclaimed 'Tourist
Hunters' may befriend you on the boat but are
harmless and often helpful. Tuk Tuk is the main town
to stay on Samosir. Use the boat service not the
large ferry, they will drop you directly at your Tuk Tuk
resort.
There are also two other harbour in Samosir, they
are: Nainggolan (1 hour drive from Tomok)
connected Muara, the ferry runs every Sunday,
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and the other
located in Simanindo (30 min drive) connected to
Tigaras which runs daily until 6PM.
Please note: As of Sep 2012 here is only one
cirrus/mastercard ATM on the island (at the white
beach entrance), better to get enough cash at
Another great way to get to Lake Toba is by train.
Two or three trains leave each day in that direction
and you want to get off either at Pematang Siantar or
Tebing Tinggi (note: the train stops at one or the
other). If you want to get to the train directly from
Medan airport, get a taxi or becak, and tell them or
write Lapangan Merdeka and Setasiun Kereta Api
Medan. From the station there's only 2 train leaves
Medan to Permatang Siantar (or Siantar) which is
11AM and 7:25PM. The fare is Rp 12,000 per person
and the journey takes approximately 3-4 hr. Train
stop at almost each station. Once you reach the
Siantar station double check the schedule for the
train for going back to Medan. Then take a Becak or
walk to the bus/taxi hub to travel to Perapat. The train
is a wonderful way to travel if you like to learn more
culture on their daily living and lifestyle. Once you are
in your seat and have a stream of buskers, food
vendors and friendly local passing by you will know
why this is often the best way to travel overland.
From Siantar (1 hour taxi) or Tebing Tinggi (2 hr taxi)
you will need to hire a taxi or a bus for road transport
to Parapat.
The ferry ride over is fantastic, just truly peaceful,
apart from the car radios playing, the ladies selling
peanuts, bottled water, mie or pretty much anything
else. Normally some of the passengers and vendors
will be able to speak English. Landing at the other
end of the 1 hour ferry journey is daunting, but again,
behave like everyone else in Indonesia and just push,
ever so politely, but firmly and eventually you will get
off the ferry and onto the main road. Alternatively use
the boat service but watch out for the guys that ask
for the fee before you embark they do not work
for the operators, you pay on the boat.
The road signs are pretty much useless, as is asking
the locals for directions. Anyway if you are going to
tuk tuk keep going, even though it may seem to be
taking forever and you have been stuck in the Kijang
for 8 hrs= with 10 other people, but you will get there
and the hosts will be wonderful.
Do not try to drive out of Samosir Island by going up
and over the top to the land bridge. The road is very
bad.
It is also possible to go to Parapat from Dumai by
mini-van, leaving in the afternoon. The trip takes
around 11 hr, and costs Rp 150,000.

Getting around
Local transportation around the lake takes the form of
boats (cheaper, school boats with limited schedules
and more expensive public boats that operate
throughout the day).
Public Boats from Parapat and surrounding areas sail
from either Ajibata or Tigaraja to Tuktuk or Tomok at
Samosir Island. The fee is Rp 7,000 per trip.
There is also bigger ship which transports Cars and
Busses sailing between Tigaraja and Tomok.
Hire a motorcycle for a day or two and get out and
about Rp 70,000 per day including full petrol. You
can bargain down to Rp 50,000 per day in low
season if you hire for several days. Most of the
motorcycles available for rent are the owner's own
transportation, so you may need to return it to them
before sunset (depends on owner) or you may be
charge for an extra fees. Take a map. There are no
police checking licenses and there is not much traffic
- just watch out for the big trucks, buses and
diabolical bridges. Honking around is a norm to
indicate that there's incoming car from the opposite or
there's a car bypassing you from the back (in driver's
point of view). A good journey to take on a
motorcycle would be to travel North from Tuk Tuk
around to the western shore, stopping at the tourist

sites along the way such as the many and varied
traditional houses and villages. The roads are very
bad in the centre of the island (bumpy and washed
out) and it takes half a day to cross this way (verse
1-2 hours by coast road which is more scenic
anyway). You can expect to ride at least up to 100
km in the day. If you're going around the island with
motorcycle or bicycle, be sure to put on some
sunblock as when you venture out in the morning
things can be deceiving due to the cooler
temperatures in the morning cause of the higher
elevation, but the sun will be intense by mid-day.
It may be obvious but just remember there are no
taxis around Tuk Tuk. Sure you can walk the small
part of the island in an hour or so but if you are
heading out for the night plan ahead on how you will
get back home. The locals are very friendly people
who will go out of their way to help. However, some
corners of the island are very quiet at night and you
may find yourself on a long long walk.
Most of the cottages and guest houses at Tuk Tuk
will rent you a very serviceable bicycle for a nominal
fee, this is a very much preferred way to get around,
but be very careful for the cars as nobody looks and
there does not seem to be any right side of the road,
even when its the left side.

comfortable in the car.The trip takes four hours from
Parapat to Medan,four hours from Parapat to
Berastagi,and seven hours from Parapat to Bukit

Take the 7AM ferry from Tuk Tuk, and have breakfast
in Parapat.
From the harbour in Parapat, jump in a local mini-van
(Rp 2000) towards the Parapat bus station. From
there you can reach nearly all the big cities in
Sumatra and even Java. A night trip to Bukkintinggi in
an air-con coach costs around Rp 180,000 with the
A.L.S. company. Prepare for one of the worst night of
your trip.
Tourist buses (5-7 persons) leave from Parapat to
Berastagi (price 100.000), Medan (65.000) and Bukit
Lawang (130.000 rps/person; 6 to 7 hours). Tickets
can be bought at local tour agencies.
