Frog Dissection Pre-lab

Directions: Search American Bullfrog and find the answers to help us prepare for dissection on

5. Why are frogs said to have two lives? F

rogs begin their lives in the water as eggs and then
tadpoles and when they are completely developed they live on land.

6. How are amphibians different from reptiles? The outer skin is different.

7. What are 3 adaptations that frogs have that make them amphibians? They normally have soft
and moist skin that is protected by a slippery layer of mucus. They also tend to live in moist places or near
water to keep their bodies from getting dry

8. List two ways in which tadpoles (immature frogs) and frogs differ from each other? They are
different because tadpoles live in water and frogs normally live on land. They are also different
because tadpoles have gills to help them breath underwater and frogs have lungs to help them
breath on land.

15. Frog lungs are poorly developed. How does this relate to their skin being thin and moist? T he
thin skin allows the respiratory gases to diffuse directly down their gradients between the blood vessels.
When the frog is out of the water mucus glands in the skin keep the frog moist, which helps absorb
dissolved oxygen from the air.

16. Name 2 ways forelimbs are different than hind limbs. The forelimbs are in the front and the
hind limbs are in the back. The hind legs are normally stronger than the forelimbs

17. Frogs produce a huge number of babies at one time WHY do you think this is (HINT: Finding
Nemo)? It is because they lay eggs

18. The frogs tongue is anchored in the very front opposite to the orientation and anchoring of
humans. Why do you think this is so? I think its like this because the frogs need a long tongue to
catch there food.
