ternational sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in w
hich thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of com
petitions. The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competit
ion with more than 200 nations participating.[2] The Olympic Games are held ever
y four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every fo
ur years but two years apart.Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic
Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th ce
ntury AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) in 1894. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the O
lympic Charter defining its structure and authority
OLYMPIC VILLAGE
An Olympic Village is an accommodation center built for the Olympic Games, usual
ly within an Olympic Park or elsewhere in a host city. Olympic Villages are buil
t to house all participating athletes, as well as officials and athletic trainer
s. After the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Olympics, the Villages have been made e
xtremely secure. Only athletes, trainers and officials are allowed to room at th
e Village, though family members and former Olympic athletes are allowed inside
with proper checks. Press and media are also barred
HISTORY OF OLYMPIC VILLAGE
.The idea of the Olympic Village comes from Pierre de Coubertin. Up until the 19
24 Summer Olympic Games, National Olympic Committees rented locations around the
host city to house participants, which was expensive. For the 1924 Summer Olymp
ics, the organizers built cabins near the Stade Olympique de Colombes to allow t
he athletes to easily access the Games' venues. The Olympic Village of the 1932
Summer Olympics served as the model of today's Olympic Villages; it consisted of
a group of buildings with rooms to lodge athletes, and buildings with other acc
ommodations
