RESOLUTION

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos

Whereas: on February 7, 2017, the United States Senate approved the nomination of Betsy DeVos to
serve as the Secretary of Education under President Donald Trump; and

Whereas: during the confirmation process, Secretary DeVos was criticized for her lack of support
and understanding of public schools; now, therefore, be it

Resolved: That the Board of Education of the Syracuse City School District calls upon the Secretary
of Education to actively engage with public school leaders, communities, and families to
better understand the advantages, needs and challenges of our public schools; to support
the public schools of the United States through full and equitable funding so that all
children will have an equal opportunity to succeed; to reject school vouchers that can
further segregate educational opportunities for all students; to embrace all students
including rural, suburban and urban students, students with disabilities, minority students,
underprivileged students, and immigrant and refugee students; to accept students gender
identities; and to completely divest herself of all conflicts of interest in her role as
Secretary of Education for the United States of America.
