Preceptor Guidelines
Clinical practicum hours are to be arranged at the convenience and availability of the preceptor.
The students personal and work schedules are expected to accommodate participation in the
required number of clinical hours prescribed by the clinical course. Students and preceptors need
to agree on the days and times that the student will be in the clinical area assigned prior to the
beginning of the practicum experience. In the event the student or preceptor got sick or weather
events make traveling hazardous, the student should notify the Graduate School clinical faculty
and also arrange to schedule a make-up time with the preceptor.
Attendance
It is the responsibility of the student to monitor the number of hours completed, and plan on
completing the required hours within the assigned semester of completion. There are times when
preceptors will choose the specific days of the week for clinical practicum due to availability of
patients, schedule of out-patient clinics, and location of clinics. The preceptor is required to date
and sign off the graduate student on each skill that was completed. When a student is unable to
report on the day of scheduled duty, the student should notify both the preceptor and the Clinical
Faculty. In times of prolonged unexpected illness, the student and or preceptor should discuss
with the Grad School clinical faculty a possibility of extension of clinical practicum.
Students must determine the appropriate dress attire prior to first clinical day. Some areas may
require that a lab coat or other specialized garb be worn in specialized patient care areas (e.g.
OR, Interventional radiology). The UERM name tag must be worn at all times during clinical
hours. Professional attire should be followed at all times particularly with patient contact.
Students are expected to be respectful to preceptors, patients/family, nursing staff and other
hospital/clinic personnel. Interactions with patients and other health care personnel are learning
opportunities for the graduate student to role model clinical expertise. Students are encouraged to
observe their preceptors interactions with other health care personnel as it relates to advanced
practice roles and to avoid falling back into staff RN role.
Clinical objectives
The graduate student should reflect and develop individual learning objectives that will meet and
facilitate his/her learning needs and enhance previous clinical experiences (e.g physical
assessment, suturing, reading of X-rays, development of patient education materials). Clinical
objectives must be measurable and be evaluated at the end of the clinical practicum until all are
met.
In general, it is the responsibility of the graduate student to arrange for evaluations to occur with
his/her preceptor. Evaluations should involve a brief summary of the experiences as well as
reflective and thorough self evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, progress and needs and
personal thoughts about how the clinical practicum could be improved in the future. The
graduate student should fill out the evaluation form first. It should be completed and signed off
by both the graduate student and the preceptor.
Preceptor qualifications
Physician preceptors should hold a medical degree from an accredited program and be board
certified. The physician must have at least 2 years of work experience and with a current license
to practice in the Philippines.
The Physician should provide the Graduate School a copy of his/her medical license and an
updated Curriculum Vitae.

Please rate the following behaviors and skills as appropriate using the following rating scale:
1) Not Observed
2) Below Expected Level: consistently requires substantial assistance to perform tasks
adequately
3) Basic Level: performs tasks with basic skill and with moderate amount of
assistance/supervision
4) Intermediate Level: performs tasks with skill and able to interpret findings with minimal
assistance/ supervision
5) High Level: performs tasks with proficiency and skill, interprets findings and information
with good judgment, using assistance/supervision. Student would be safe to function in a
setting with consultation available.
6) Outstanding: performs tasks with high level of proficiency and skill, interprets findings
and information with outstanding judgment without assistance. Student would be safe to
function in a setting without consultation available
Note: Depending upon the setting, not all areas will be addressed. In this case, please rate
as 1.
